Start with the provider’s room recommendation, then verify interior length, width, height, cubic feet, payload and the exact vehicle assigned to your reservation.
U-Haul frames the decision with the practical question, “What size moving truck do I need?” The answer depends on what you own, how densely each room is furnished, how many boxes you have and whether unusually large items consume space. A sparsely furnished two-bedroom apartment can need less truck than a crowded one-bedroom house.

Truck size labels are only a starting point
Rental companies use room and bedroom labels to give customers a quick estimate. Those labels are recommendations, not guarantees that every household’s contents will fit. A truck advertised for “two bedrooms” may work for one household and fail for another because furniture dimensions, box count, appliances, shelving and outdoor equipment vary widely.
Exterior length is also an unreliable shortcut. Two trucks called “26-foot” can have different interior widths, heights, wheel-well layouts and usable volumes. Compare the cargo box dimensions and published cubic feet for the actual provider and vehicle, then confirm what will be available at your pickup location and date.

The figures below are provider-published specifications and fit guidance, not independent measurements or a laboratory comparison. Penske says its specifications are based on commonly rented vehicles and can vary by make, model and year.
Published truck sizes from U-Haul and Penske
U-Haul’s consumer lineup uses 10-, 15-, 20- and 26-foot trucks. Penske’s comparison lineup uses 12-, 16-, 22- and 26-foot trucks, plus a cargo van. Their ladders do not line up exactly, so compare volume and dimensions rather than assuming a similarly named truck is equivalent.

| Penske 26-foot | Five to seven rooms on the comparison page; up to five bedrooms in the sizing guide | 1,700 cu. ft. | 25’11" × 8’1" × 8’1" |
U-Haul’s published figures are 402 cubic feet for the 10-foot truck, 764 for the 15-foot, 1,016 for the 20-foot and 1,682 for the 26-foot. Penske lists 404 cubic feet for its cargo van, then 450, 800, 1,200 and 1,700 cubic feet for its 12-, 16-, 22- and 26-foot trucks. These numbers belong to each provider’s stated configuration; they should not be treated as a neutral, independently tested comparison.

Why the two 26-foot trucks are not identical
The U-Haul 26-foot truck is listed at 1,682 cubic feet with an interior measuring 26’2" × 8’2" × 8’3". Penske’s 26-foot truck is listed at 1,700 cubic feet with cargo dimensions of 25’11" × 8’1" × 8’1". The small difference in stated volume does not establish which truck will pack better for your furniture. Door openings, wheel wells, tie-down points and the assigned vehicle can matter as much as the headline number.
The U-Haul 29-foot listing needs confirmation
U-Haul’s chart also shows a 29-foot option labeled for a four- to six-bedroom home, while its separate sizing guide calls the 26-foot truck the largest U-Haul moving truck. Treat that as a difference in page context or fleet category, not as proof that every renter can reserve a 29-foot consumer truck. Ask the rental location which vehicle category is actually available and request its cargo dimensions before relying on the larger listing.
How to choose the right size step by step
- List the largest items first. Record beds, mattresses, sofas, dining tables, hutches, refrigerators, washers, dryers, shelving, desks, exercise equipment, patio furniture and anything unusually long, tall or fragile. Measure pieces that may be close to the truck’s door height or width.
- Count boxes by size. “Two bedrooms” says little if one home has 40 small boxes and another has 120 large cartons. Separate book boxes, wardrobe boxes, standard moving boxes and irregular containers. Note items that cannot be stacked safely.
- Use rooms as a cross-check, not a promise. Compare your inventory with the provider’s room or bedroom guidance. If your home is densely furnished, move up a size; if it is sparsely furnished and you have already removed items, a smaller vehicle may work.
- Compare usable dimensions and volume. Check cargo length, width and height, then cubic feet. A long sofa may need length even when your total box volume looks adequate. A tall wardrobe or refrigerator may make height and door clearance decisive.
- Check weight limits. Cubic feet tells you how much space exists, not how much weight is safe. Payload or load capacity should be checked for the specific vehicle when published. The cited sizing tables do not establish a universal payload number for every truck, so ask the provider rather than inferring it from volume.
- Confirm loading equipment. Penske lists ramps on its 16-, 22- and 26-foot trucks. Verify ramp availability for the exact reservation, especially when loading appliances or heavy furniture.
- Verify the assigned vehicle. Fleets change by location, make, model and year. Before pickup, confirm the actual truck’s cargo dimensions, capacity, door opening and equipment. If the substitute vehicle is smaller or configured differently, ask for a suitable correction before loading.
Match common household situations to a starting point
Studio or lightly furnished one-bedroom
A U-Haul 10-foot truck or Penske cargo van is the smallest listed starting point for a compact move. Their published volumes are close—402 and 404 cubic feet—but the cargo shapes differ substantially. The Penske van is only 4’6" wide, so a wide sofa, large mattress or bulky appliance may fit differently than in the U-Haul box. Measure the largest items rather than choosing on volume alone.

- PROTECTS: Moving blanket (6-pack) for preventing damage during a move; ideal for furniture, large appliances, and more
- DURABLE: Heavy-duty, tear-resistant fabric includes reinforced, double-lock stitching and polyester binding for lasting strength
- DOUBLE SIDED: Both sides offer protection from scratches, nicks, dirt, and moisture
- VERSATILE: Fully wrap valuables, fold to fill empty spaces in boxes, or use to slide heavy items across the floor
- PRODUCT DIMENSIONS: 72 x 40 inches (LxW); weighs approximately 2-3/4 pounds each
One-bedroom home or two-bedroom apartment
U-Haul points to its 15-foot truck, with 764 cubic feet, while Penske’s 12-foot and 16-foot trucks provide 450 and 800 cubic feet. The 12-foot Penske option is much closer to the smallest end of this range; a furnished two-bedroom apartment may need the 16-foot truck, particularly with dining furniture, appliances and a large box count.

Two- or three-bedroom household
U-Haul recommends the 20-foot truck for a two-bedroom home or three-bedroom apartment and lists 1,016 cubic feet. Penske lists 800 cubic feet for its 16-foot truck and 1,200 for its 22-foot truck. If your inventory falls between those capacities, count large pieces and boxes carefully and ask the provider to review an itemized list.
Large three- to five-bedroom move
U-Haul’s 26-foot truck is listed for a three- to four-bedroom home. Penske places three to five rooms on its 22-foot comparison entry and up to five bedrooms in its sizing guide, then lists the 26-foot truck for five to seven rooms or up to five bedrooms. These overlapping labels show why room counts cannot replace an inventory. Heavy appliances, a full garage, workshop tools or outdoor furniture can push a household beyond the nominal recommendation.

Volume is not the same as a safe load
A truck can run out of payload before it runs out of floor space. Books, tools, exercise equipment, stone tables and appliances add weight quickly. Conversely, lightweight bedding and empty boxes consume volume without approaching the weight limit. Use the provider’s payload rating for the assigned vehicle and distribute dense items low and toward the front of the cargo area as directed by the rental company.
Do not assume that packing to the ceiling is safe. Leave room for protective wrapping, keep aisles or access space where necessary, and avoid stacking unstable items against the rear door. If you are near either the volume or payload limit, a larger truck or a second transport option may be safer than forcing the load into a close fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLoading tools that help—but do not add capacity
- Furniture pads or moving blankets: Penske says pads help protect furniture from scratches, dirt and soil. They occupy some space, so include them in your loading plan.
- Hand truck: A hand truck can carry multiple boxes and make heavy items easier to move. It improves handling efficiency but does not increase the truck’s cubic feet or payload limit.
- Ramp: Penske lists ramps on its 16-, 22- and 26-foot trucks. Confirm that the exact vehicle has one and check whether its length and slope work at both addresses.
- Straps and padding: Secure tall or fragile pieces so they cannot shift during braking and turns. Follow the provider’s instructions for tie-down points and weight distribution.
When a trailer is the better answer
U-Haul suggests considering a 6-by-12-foot cargo trailer with its 26-foot truck when the truck alone seems insufficient. This is a provider-specific option, not a universal solution. Confirm that the truck is approved to tow that trailer, that the combined load stays within the truck and trailer limits, that the hitch and wiring are compatible, and that the route allows the combined vehicle. Trailer availability and reservation terms can vary by location.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by bedroom count alone
Bedroom labels hide furnishing density. Build the item list first and use the label only as a reasonableness check.
Comparing exterior lengths
A nominal 20-, 22- or 26-foot label does not reveal width, height, wheel-well intrusion or usable volume. Compare the complete cargo specification.
Ignoring awkward dimensions
A sectional sofa, grandfather clock, tall wardrobe, pool table or long shelving unit may determine the truck size even when total cubic feet appears sufficient. Measure and plan the loading orientation before booking.
Assuming the website’s listed model is guaranteed
Fleet specifications can vary by make, model and year, and a location may substitute a vehicle. Confirm the assigned truck and its equipment before pickup.
Forgetting the route and loading sites
The cited sizing guides do not provide a universal rule for choosing based on driving comfort, parking, route restrictions or insurance. Check turning space, low clearances, street access, loading zones and the rental contract for your particular route.
A final pre-booking checklist
- Inventory every large, heavy, fragile or unusually shaped item.
- Estimate box count by size and identify items that cannot be stacked.
- Compare the provider’s interior length, width, height and cubic feet.
- Check the assigned vehicle’s payload or load rating when available.
- Confirm door dimensions, ramp, hand truck and pad availability.
- Ask whether the listed truck is guaranteed or may be substituted.
- Verify parking, clearance, loading access and route restrictions.
- If capacity is close, have the provider review your itemized inventory.
Bottom line: choose by inventory, then verify the truck
Use room guidance to narrow the choices, but let your furniture, appliances, boxes, weight and awkward dimensions make the final decision. Compare the actual cargo box—not just the exterior label—and leave a margin when your estimate is close. Because U-Haul and Penske use different size ladders and fleet configurations, a 26-foot truck from one provider is not automatically equivalent to a 26-foot truck from the other. Confirm the vehicle assigned at your location and date before you load.
