Moving Space Calculator FAQs: How to Estimate Cubic Feet, Rooms, and Truck Capacity

The reliable way to estimate moving space is to inventory the belongings that are actually going, estimate each item or box in cubic feet, add the results, and compare that total with the exact truck’s published cargo volume, interior dimensions, and payload. Room count is only a starting clue. Two homes with the same number of bedrooms can require very different trucks because of furniture density, closets, garages, appliances, storage and packing style.

What cubic feet means in a moving estimate

Cubic feet measure three-dimensional volume. For a rectangular item, multiply its length by its width and height after converting all measurements to the same unit.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

When measurements are in feet:

length (ft) × width (ft) × height (ft) = cubic feet

When measurements are in inches, multiply the three dimensions and divide by 1,728, because one cubic foot contains 12 × 12 × 12 cubic inches.

BOX USA Moving Boxes Holds 65lbs, 18"L x 14"W x 12"H (10-Pack) Medium - Corrugated Cardboard Box for Shipping, Mailing, Packing, Packaging and Storage
  • MOVING SUPPLIES FOR HOME OR BUSINESS – Moving boxes for apartment and house moves, classrooms, offices, and small business relocations. Ideal for packing books, clothing, linens, office supplies, and household goods for moving, storage, or shipping.
  • STRONG CORRUGATED BOXES FOR HEAVY ITEMS – Made from 32-ECT corrugated cardboard, supporting up to 65 lbs when properly packed. Helps protect books, kitchenware, tools, and household items during moving, shipping, or storage.
  • SAFE FOR DISHES, GLASSWARE & FRAGILE ITEMS – Suitable for packing dishes, glassware, kitchen supplies, collectibles, and breakables when used with packing paper or cushioning. Corrugated construction adds structure and protection during moves.
  • EASY TO ASSEMBLE & STORE FLAT – Ships flat to save space before use. Simple fold-and-tape assembly allows quick setup for moving, organizing, shipping, or packing household and business items.
  • SUITABLE FOR STORAGE & REUSE – Kraft corrugated boxes can be reused for organizing garages, closets, offices, and storage units. Designed for packing, moving, and storing items in clean, dry environments. Made in the USA and recyclable.

For example, a box measuring 30 × 20 × 18 inches has 10,800 cubic inches. Dividing by 1,728 gives approximately 6.25 cubic feet. Use the box’s outside dimensions, not its nominal label, when you need a closer estimate.

A calculator total is an estimate of space occupied by your shipment. It is not a guarantee that every object will fit, and it is not a certified shipment-weight ticket.

How to calculate moving volume step by step

  1. List every room and storage area. Include bedrooms, living and dining areas, offices, kitchens, closets, basements, attics, garages, sheds and patios.
  2. Record the items that are moving. List furniture, appliances, electronics, lamps, rugs, bicycles, tools, outdoor furniture, boxes and plastic bins. Mark anything being sold, donated, discarded or left behind so it does not inflate the estimate.
  3. Measure unusual or bulky pieces. Sofas, wardrobes, armoires, exercise equipment, safes, refrigerators and large outdoor items can determine whether a load fits even when the overall volume looks acceptable.
  4. Assign a volume to each item or packed group. Use measured dimensions for large rectangular pieces. For boxes and bins, use their outside dimensions or a clearly stated planning allowance.
  5. Convert and multiply consistently. Keep all dimensions in feet, or calculate in inches and divide by 1,728.
  6. Subtotal each room, then add the room subtotals. Keeping subtotals makes it easier to find an omitted closet, garage or storage unit and to remove items that will not travel.
  7. Add an explicit allowance for packing materials. Boxes, bins and protective materials occupy space. Do not assume that empty gaps will disappear; furniture must be protected and loads cannot be packed like a solid block.
  8. Compare the result with the vehicle you can actually reserve. Check cargo volume, interior dimensions, payload and configuration on the rental listing before booking.

Why room count cannot determine cubic feet by itself

There is no authoritative universal number of cubic feet per bedroom or furnished room. A sparsely furnished one-bedroom apartment may contain less than a heavily furnished studio with a storage locker. A three-bedroom home with a packed garage, workshop and outdoor furniture can require substantially more space than a three-bedroom home without those areas.

Use room count as a cross-check after building an inventory, not as the primary calculation. Count closets, garage contents, appliances, boxes and bins separately. If an oversized item is important to the move, measure it or request a professional survey rather than forcing it into a generic room allowance.

A documented three-bedroom example

Safebound’s Space Check lists a 102-item three-bedroom starter at approximately 1,700 cubic feet under its planning allowance. The same page reports a 1,599-cubic-foot catalog subtotal. Those figures describe that provider’s specific example inventory and method, published September 1, 2026 and reviewed September 13, 2026. They are not an average three-bedroom benchmark or an industry standard.

How calculator assumptions affect the answer

Online calculators do not all model a household in the same way. One may use a catalog of standard furniture and box allowances; another may ask for item counts and apply its own packing factors. Treat the output as a planning range tied to that calculator’s assumptions.

Move Trust Hub describes an itemized, room-by-room approach and uses 7 pounds per cubic foot as a planning estimate. It also says actual weight changes with the density of your belongings and how tightly or loosely they are packed. The 7-pound figure is therefore a shortcut for planning, not a regulator-issued standard, a guaranteed scale reading or a binding weight ticket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safebound describes a different item-based allowance method and cautions that its truck-fit view is not a guarantee. Do not combine one site’s room allowances, another site’s box assumptions and the 7-pound multiplier into a supposedly universal formula. Keep the source and method attached to every estimate.

U-Haul truck capacities compared

U-Haul’s current truck-size comparison, accessed October 13, 2026, publishes the following cargo-volume figures for its truck classes. The home-size labels are the provider’s guidance, not a promise that every household of that size will fit.

Truck class Published cargo volume U-Haul home-size comparison
10-foot truck 402 cubic feet Studio or one-bedroom apartment
15-foot truck 764 cubic feet One-bedroom home or two-bedroom apartment
20-foot truck 1,016 cubic feet Two-bedroom home
26-foot truck 1,682 cubic feet Three- to four-bedroom home
29-foot truck 2,057 cubic feet Four- to six-bedroom home

These capacities apply to the listed U-Haul classes. They are not universal capacities for every rental company or every vehicle carrying the same nominal truck length. Vehicle substitutions, interior configurations and availability can change the usable space.

How to choose a truck from your cubic-foot estimate

1. Start with the inventory total

Compare your calculated volume with the truck’s published cargo volume. A small difference is not automatically safe: estimates may omit packing materials, and tightly shaped furniture can leave unusable gaps.

2. Check the three interior dimensions

Compare the truck’s interior length, width and height with your largest pieces. A tall wardrobe, long sofa, refrigerator or exercise machine can fail the fit test even when the summed cubic feet are below the truck’s advertised volume.

3. Check payload, not just space

Dense books, tools, appliances, pianos and masonry can reach the allowable payload before the cargo area is full. Use the specific vehicle’s payload or maximum-load information and account for passengers, fuel and equipment as required by the rental terms.

4. Use bedroom guidance only as a reasonableness check

The U-Haul labels in the table can reveal an obviously undersized choice, but they should not override your itemized inventory. A lightly furnished four-bedroom home and a full three-bedroom home may need different solutions.

5. Decide whether a trailer or second trip is practical

U-Haul states that a 6-by-12-foot cargo trailer adds 18% more space when towed with its 26-foot truck. That is the company’s stated comparison, not a guarantee for every load. Confirm that the booked truck is approved for the trailer, that the combination is available at your location and that your driving, parking and route conditions make it workable.

When cubic feet says “fits” but the load still does not

  • Shape mismatch: A long or tall object may not pass through the door or may not fit beneath the truck’s interior height.
  • Non-stackable items: Glass, fragile furniture and appliances require protective clearance rather than dense stacking.
  • Access constraints: Narrow doorways, stairwells, elevators and loading docks can prevent an item from entering the truck even if its interior dimensions appear sufficient.
  • Weight concentration: Heavy items may need to be distributed over the floor and secured, limiting how much additional cargo can be loaded.
  • Estimation error: Standard catalog allowances may not reflect unusually deep furniture, overfilled boxes or irregular storage contents.

For a large, expensive or unusually shaped shipment, ask the mover or rental provider for a survey or verify the vehicle’s actual interior dimensions before committing.

How to estimate an interstate move

The calculation itself does not change for an interstate move: inventory belongings, calculate item or box volume, total the cubic feet and compare it with the vehicle. What changes is the consequence of being wrong. A short local second trip may be inconvenient; an interstate trip can make an undersized truck or an extra shipment much more costly and difficult to correct.

Keep a copy of your inventory and identify the items whose dimensions or weight could change the vehicle decision. If you receive a mover’s estimate, compare its listed volume and weight assumptions with your own inventory rather than treating an online calculator as the mover’s final assessment.

How cubic-foot estimates relate to moving costs and route guides

Cubic feet helps describe shipment size, but it does not by itself calculate a county cost range, route price or travel plan. A calculator’s volume output and a mover’s quote are separate planning layers, often based on different assumptions. Use the volume estimate to communicate the size of the load, then read the quote or route tool for its own definitions, dates and conditions.

Combined with reinforced stitching, these bags won't snap or tear, even when packed with heavy linens, books, or kitchenware.
  • THE SMARTER BOX ALTERNATIVE — Why buy expensive, bulky moving boxes that end up in the trash? One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag provides the same volume as a large box but is far easier to carry over the shoulder. When empty, all 8 bags fold down into a compact stack, saving you a massive amount of storage space in your closet or car trunk.
  • COLLEGE DORM MOVE-IN READY — Save time and car space on move-in day. One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag is a dorm room lifesaver. To visualize the space: it fits 2 Twin XL comforters and 1 mattress pad, OR 6 standard pillows, OR 30+ sneakers and an entire semester’s worth of sweaters. It’s the ultimate heavy-duty solution for carrying everything from the trunk to the dorm room.
  • INSTANT CONTENT IDENTIFICATION — Stop the "guessing game" on moving day. Each tote features a clear plastic tag pocket. Simply slide in a label to identify "Master Bedroom" or "Garage Toys" in seconds. This small design detail saves hours of unzipping and searching, making your organization system professional and efficient.
  • PRO-GRADE PROTECTION — Crafted from high-density, water-resistant woven fabric with smooth #5 dual zippers. These aren't flimsy one-move bags; they are designed for years of reuse. Whether it's light rain during transit or long-term storage in a dusty attic, your clothes and linens stay pristine and protected.

If a quote lists a shipment volume, ask whether it is measured space, a catalog allowance or a carrier’s estimate. Resolve differences before booking, especially when the quote depends on a particular truck class or a weight limit.

Common calculator mistakes and fixes

Counting rooms instead of possessions

Fix: Build an itemized list and include closets, garage, storage and outdoor areas.

Mixing inches and feet

Fix: Convert every dimension first, or calculate in cubic inches and divide by 1,728.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving out boxes

Fix: Estimate the boxes and bins you expect after packing, not only the furniture visible before packing.

Using a room benchmark as a promise

Fix: Treat any provider’s room example as that provider’s inventory scenario; no universal cubic-feet-per-room figure is established.

Comparing only truck length

Fix: Compare published cargo volume, interior length, width, height and payload for the exact vehicle.

Assuming a weight multiplier is exact

Fix: Use the 7-pounds-per-cubic-foot figure only as a rough planning shortcut and confirm actual weight requirements with the carrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical final checklist

  • Every room, closet, garage and storage area is represented.
  • Items not moving are removed from the list.
  • Oversized and unusually heavy pieces have actual dimensions or a professional assessment.
  • Box and bin volume is included.
  • All dimensions use consistent units.
  • The total cubic feet is compared with the exact truck’s published volume.
  • The largest item fits through the truck opening and within interior height, width and length.
  • Payload is sufficient for dense belongings.
  • Trailer compatibility, availability and route practicality are confirmed if you plan to use one.
  • The rental listing is checked again at booking because truck specifications and availability can change.

The best answer to “How big is my move?” is therefore an inventory-backed range, not a bedroom count. Calculate what is actually traveling, preserve the assumptions behind the estimate and verify the particular vehicle before you reserve it.
