A standard CD player cannot play a movie DVD. It may fail to recognize the disc, stop trying to read it, or spin without producing playback; the exact response depends on the model. Use a DVD-capable player or computer drive, and check its manual to confirm support for the disc format.
Why a CD player cannot play a movie DVD
CD players are designed to read audio CDs, not decode and play DVD movies. The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives states that “DVDs will not play in CD drives or players, although many DVD drives are compatible with CDs.” That compatibility works in one direction: many DVD drives can also read CDs, but a CD player is not thereby able to read DVDs.

Different optical media can require different reading capabilities. Sony discusses laser differences in guidance about CD-RW versus standard CD and CD-R media; that example is not a direct specification of the precise optical differences between CDs and DVDs. The practical distinction is that a CD-only player lacks DVD movie playback capability.

What you might see when you insert the disc
There is no single response guaranteed across all CD players. The player might reject the disc or fail to recognize it. It might spin briefly, or spin without producing sound or movie playback. Philips describes a spinning-disc/no-sound symptom in audio-player troubleshooting, but that is an example rather than a prediction for every model.

A disc spinning or a brief reading attempt does not mean the player can decode the movie. The cited support guidance establishes incompatibility, not that inserting a DVD will damage the player or the disc.
What to use instead
- DVD player: Use a DVD-capable model and verify that it supports the specific disc type, such as a pressed DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, or a rewritable format. Supported formats vary by model.
- Computer optical drive: Use a DVD-capable drive and suitable playback software. A drive that reads DVDs does not, by itself, guarantee that the computer has software able to play the movie.
Check the device manual for supported formats. Sony’s support guidance also notes that a movie file merely copied onto a disc is not necessarily a playable DVD: the disc must be authored in a format the player supports.

The available support guidance establishes that a CD player cannot play a DVD movie, but it does not establish that trying the disc damages the player or the DVD. Since the exact response depends on the device, stop if the player behaves abnormally and consult its manual rather than repeatedly attempting playback.
