Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo keep your photos in Google Photos’ expected chronological order, transfer the original files from your old Pixel during the new Android phone’s setup, or sign in to the same Google Account if the library is already backed up. A downloaded file may show a new filesystem date even when its original capture timestamp remains embedded in its metadata. Check the dates in Google Photos on the new phone before erasing or trading in the Pixel.
First, know which timestamp you are checking
A photo can have several dates, and they do not always match:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Filesystem date: The operating system’s created or modified time for the file. Copying or downloading can assign a new value.
- Embedded capture date: Date and time stored in the image or video metadata, usually reflecting when the camera recorded it.
- Google Photos date: The date shown for the item in Photos. It can be edited, so it may differ from the original camera timestamp.
Google says an operating system may assign a new timestamp to a downloaded photo or video file even though the original timestamp remains embedded in the file’s metadata. A changed filesystem date by itself does not prove the capture date was lost. Google Photos explains downloaded file timestamps and metadata, and Google Account Help describes metadata in downloaded files.
Choose the route that matches where the photos are
| Where your photos are | What to do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| On the old Pixel | Use Android’s setup-time Copy apps & data transfer, by cable or wirelessly, and select photos and videos. | Check that expected items arrived; hidden-folder media may not copy. |
| Backed up to Google Photos | Sign in to the same Google Account on the new phone and check Photos. If you also need local files, download selected items or export your library. | Check the date shown in Photos, not only the downloaded file’s filesystem date. |
| In both places | Check the cloud library first, then transfer or download only what is missing or needed locally. | Avoid assuming that a second transfer is necessary just because the file date differs. |
Google’s Android transfer instructions cover setup from another Android device. For a Pixel-specific destination, consult Google’s Pixel transfer guide; the available screens and details can depend on the phone model and Android version.

Transfer photos stored on the old Pixel
Start the new Android phone’s setup and follow its Copy apps & data flow. Select photos and videos when offered. Google documents both cable and wireless transfer; its general guidance says the same data categories are supported by either method, and setup transfer can take minutes to hours. The guided transfer may only be available once, so do it while setting up the new phone rather than assuming you can reopen the same flow later.
Use a cable or wireless transfer?
Either is a documented option for general Android setup transfer. For a wired transfer, check that the cable supports data and fits both phones; an adapter may be needed. Follow the new phone’s prompts if it recommends a cable. Wireless transfer avoids cable-fit issues but still requires completing the guided setup flow. A cable is not a special timestamp-preservation requirement.

Check folders the guided transfer may omit
Android’s general setup guidance lists hidden-folder media among items that will not copy. If you used hidden folders on the Pixel, inspect them separately and preserve anything important before wiping the old phone. Do not assume that every app-specific folder or every media component is included simply because the main camera roll appears on the new device.
When the library is backed up to Google Photos
Sign in to the same Google Account on the new phone and open Google Photos before making another copy. If the photos are present in the cloud library, they may be available in Photos without a separate phone-to-phone transfer. If you need actual local files, Google Photos supports downloading individual items; for a whole-library export, Google Account Help provides the account data download route.

After a download, inspect the file’s metadata rather than treating its filesystem date as the capture date. Google says additional Google Photos metadata, such as comments, can be provided in a secondary JSON file alongside downloaded content. The JSON is not a replacement for the image or video file; keep related export files together if that additional information matters.
Google’s Photos transfer guidance for copying to a service outside Google describes exclusions for that service-to-service process, including some Locked Folder items, unsaved creations, trash content, and manually edited metadata such as comments. Those exclusions are specific to that process and should not be treated as a description of Android’s phone setup transfer.

Verify dates in Google Photos before removing the old phone’s copies
- On the new phone, open Google Photos and confirm that the expected account is signed in.
- Check a small sample spanning older and recent photos and videos. Open each item’s details and compare its displayed date with what you expect from the original capture.
- If a date looks wrong, check the item’s details and the date and time settings on the device. For downloaded or scanned items, device date/time settings can affect the displayed timestamp.
- Keep the old Pixel’s copies until you have confirmed that important items and their dates appear as expected on the new phone.
Keeping the originals until verification is a practical safeguard: Google documents possible transfer omissions and differences among timestamps, but does not promise a loss-free result for every device, folder, or media type.
Fix a date that appears wrong
Check the Photos date and the device clock
Open the item’s details in Google Photos to see the date and time Photos is using. Also check the phone’s date, time, and time-zone settings, particularly if the item was downloaded or scanned. Google’s troubleshooting guidance notes that these device settings can affect displayed dates.

Account for the before-4-a.m. sorting rule
Google Photos sorts photos taken before 4 a.m. into the previous day. A photo that appears one calendar day earlier may therefore be following Photos’ sorting rule rather than having lost its capture metadata. See Google Photos’ troubleshooting guidance for missing or misplaced photos.
Understand edited dates
Google Photos can display an edited date and time for a backed-up photo. Google says sharing or downloading may show the original camera timestamp instead of the edited value. If the displayed date differs from the file metadata, determine which date you need to preserve: the original camera time or the date edited in Photos. Google’s date and time editing instructions explain the app’s behavior and its restriction to backed-up photos.
Quick Recap
Before you wipe or trade in the Pixel
- Confirm the new phone is signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Check representative old and recent photos and videos in Google Photos.
- Inspect any hidden-folder media or other items you know were stored outside the main camera roll.
- If you downloaded files, distinguish their filesystem dates from embedded capture metadata and Photos’ displayed dates.
- Keep the old phone’s copies until the items you care about have been checked.
