Mouse cursor assets are graphics or files used to represent a pointer in Windows, a website, an app, or a game. They are not interchangeable: Windows themes use cursor files such as .cur and .ani, while games commonly use PNG images or spritesheets, and websites use CSS cursor URLs. Choose for the target platform first, then check the hotspot—the point that actually clicks—along with state coverage, size, and license.
What counts as a mouse cursor asset?
The term covers both artwork and the platform-specific data needed to display it as a pointer. A pack might contain one decorative arrow, a set of interaction states, an animated cursor, or a complete Windows theme. A PNG preview is not necessarily a ready-to-install cursor: it may lack hotspot metadata, animation timing, and Windows theme mappings.
- Desktop cursor files: Windows uses
.curfor static pointers and.anifor animated ones. A scheme or theme can map files to roles such as Arrow, IBeam, Wait, and Crosshair. Microsoft documents cursor mappings in theme files. - Raw images: PNG, SVG, and other image formats can serve as source art for websites, games, or apps, but the target system may need separate hotspot and animation settings.
- Spritesheets and frame sequences: These package multiple cursor states or animation frames for a game or custom application.
- Cursor software: A utility for installing, switching, or managing cursors is different from a pack of cursor artwork.
Choose assets for the platform

For Windows themes, mapping only the default arrow leaves other roles unchanged unless they are assigned too. Microsoft’s theme format includes separate entries such as Arrow, Help, AppStarting, Wait, Crosshair, and IBeam in the [Control PanelCursors] section.
Understand formats before downloading
PNG
PNG is widely supported for static art, with transparency and straightforward import into web and game workflows. It does not normally embed the cursor hotspot or animation instructions, and an ordinary PNG cannot be installed as a Windows cursor just by copying it into a folder. Raster images can blur if enlarged beyond their intended size.

SVG
SVG can stay crisp when scaled and is convenient for vector editing. For CSS cursors, MDN says browsers are required to support PNG and secure static SVG 1.1 cursor images; complex SVG features, animation, or embedded content may not behave as expected. Some game engines require raster conversion. See MDN’s CSS cursor reference.
CUR and ANI
.cur is suited to static Windows pointers and can carry hotspot information. .ani is for animated Windows cursors. Neither should be treated as a universal game or browser format; support depends on the target environment.
Spritesheets and source files
A spritesheet can simplify animation and state management, but only if the pack explains how to use it. Check for frame dimensions, order, timing, loop behavior, hotspot alignment, and whether the frames form an animation or are separate alternatives. Editable source files are useful when you need to recolor, resize, or adapt a design.
Hotspots, dimensions, and animation
Set the click point accurately
The hotspot is the coordinate that registers the click. It is commonly at an arrow tip, fingertip, or targeting reticle’s center. Ask whether coordinates are measured from the top-left, whether they refer to source pixels or displayed pixels, and whether every state and animation frame shares the same alignment. Apple’s AppKit API also pairs a custom cursor image with a hotspot when creating an NSCursor; see Apple’s NSCursor documentation and its hotSpot property.

}The 4 4 coordinates identify the hotspot. If the image fails or is unsupported, the browser uses crosshair. For a hand-shaped link state, use a semantic fallback such as pointer.
Pick a useful size
Pixel-art packs commonly use 8×8, 16×16, or 32×32 source images. Those dimensions describe the artwork, not a guarantee about its physical display size. MDN notes that Firefox and Chromium commonly restrict cursor images to 128×128 pixels by default and recommends 32×32 as a practical target; these are observed browser behaviors, not a universal CSS limit. Smaller, legible artwork is usually more usable than detail that disappears at pointer size.
Plan animation deliberately
Animation may arrive as an ANI file, a spritesheet, or separate PNG frames. Confirm whether the target platform plays it directly or requires application logic. Check frame rate, loop behavior, and hotspot stability, and include a static fallback. Constant motion can distract users or make the pointer harder to track.
Install a cursor pack in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Under Related settings, open Additional mouse settings.
- In Mouse Properties, select the Pointers tab.
- Choose a scheme, or select a role under Customize, then click Browse.
- Select a
.curor.anifile and click Open. Repeat for other roles if the pack does not supply a complete scheme. - Click Apply and OK. If you assigned files individually, save the result as a new scheme if that option is available.
Windows 10 labels and Settings paths can differ. For accessibility adjustments in Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch to change pointer size and color. Microsoft also documents mouse settings and visibility options on its mouse settings support page and Windows visibility guide.
If an installer fails or you do not trust it, extract the archive and assign cursor files through Mouse Properties instead. Avoid running an installer whose contents or source you cannot verify.

Use cursor assets on a website or in an app
CSS cursors
Use a modest image, include a meaningful fallback keyword, and test the result at different zoom levels and on the browsers and operating systems your audience uses. You can provide multiple URL options:

}Do not use a custom image to obscure standard interaction cues. A link should still behave and be identified as a link, even if its cursor artwork is customized.
Native apps and games
In AppKit, an application can create an NSCursor from an image and hotspot, then set it for an interaction or view. That controls the cursor within application behavior; it does not establish a general macOS system-wide theme.
In a game, import the image or frames and configure the engine’s cursor state, hotspot, filtering, display scaling, visibility, input mode, and animation timing. Pixel art generally needs nearest-neighbor filtering to avoid blur when scaled; smoother artwork may suit other filtering. Framework packages can reduce setup but still need platform testing. For example, the Flutter custom_mouse_cursor package lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support; its web behavior has separate engine requirements and should not be assumed identical.
Evaluate a pack for completeness and usability
- State coverage: Look for the roles your product needs, such as default, link, text, grab, grabbing, loading, unavailable, crosshair, move, and resize. A decorative arrow is not a complete interaction set.
- Visual consistency: Check silhouette, outline, scale, angle, and alignment across states. Ensure the design stays visible on both light and dark backgrounds.
- Technical readiness: Look for transparent backgrounds, clean edges, documented dimensions, hotspot coordinates, frame timing, and separate files or a usable spritesheet.
- Accessibility: Prefer a clear, high-contrast silhouette that does not obscure content. Offer a static alternative to animation where possible. Windows includes built-in pointer size, color, and visibility controls.
- Deployment fit: Confirm the actual file format works in the intended operating system, browser, engine, or framework rather than relying on a marketplace label such as “cross-platform.”

For a broader marketplace, Envato Elements’ mouse cursor category includes cursor-related assets. The applicable license depends on the individual listing and plan, so check both before relying on an asset. MouseMux is a different category: software for multiple mouse cursors on a Windows desktop, not a conventional cursor-art pack.

Check the license before using an asset
Price and download availability do not establish what you may do with a file. A CC0 listing, a commercial-use license with redistribution limits, and a non-commercial-only pack grant materially different permissions. Check the exact product terms and retain a copy of the license and transaction record.
- Does the license permit your intended commercial use, including a shipped game, website, or app?
- Is attribution required, and in what form?
- Can you edit or remix the art?
- May the files be embedded in a finished product, and are raw-file redistribution or resale prohibited?
- Are there stated restrictions on asset scraping or AI-training databases?
- Does use depend on a subscription or a particular marketplace license?
If commercial permission is unclear, ask the creator before shipping. “Free,” “name your own price,” and “downloadable” do not themselves grant commercial rights.
Troubleshoot common cursor problems
The pointer is offset from the click
The hotspot is probably wrong or was not configured. Check whether the file embeds it; otherwise set the CSS or engine coordinates explicitly. Compare the visible tip with the actual click location and verify alignment across animation frames.
The cursor is invisible
Check the image path, alpha channel, format support, and image dimensions. White artwork may disappear on a light background. Test the file as an ordinary image, provide a CSS keyword fallback, and use a smaller PNG if the target rejects the original.

The cursor is blurry
Pixel art may be using smoothing, or a raster source may be enlarged beyond its intended size. Use nearest-neighbor filtering for pixel art, supply suitable size variants, or use SVG where the target supports it.
It works in one browser but not another
Possible causes include image size, unsupported formats or SVG features, a missing fallback keyword, and platform differences. Provide a PNG fallback, finish the CSS URL list with a semantic keyword, and test in the browsers and operating systems that matter to your project.
Animation does not play
Separate PNG frames need application logic; an .ani file is not a universal animation format. Check support in the target context, add frame timing if the application handles animation, and provide a static default.
The pack cannot be used commercially
Recheck the listing’s license rather than relying on its price or “free” label. Contact the creator if terms are unclear, and do not redistribute raw files when the license forbids it.
