Short answer: the Motorola MOTOKEY Mini EX108 is a genuine 2011-era feature phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard, 2-megapixel camera, FM radio and removable 750 mAh battery. It is 2G GSM only—with no 3G, 4G LTE, VoLTE, Wi‑Fi or GPS—so it is mainly a collector, retro or niche local-GSM device in 2026, not a dependable modern daily phone.
What the EX108 is
Motorola sold the EX108 as the MOTOKEY Mini, a compact non-touch bar phone aimed at messaging, email and early social-network use. Its defining feature is an integrated physical QWERTY keyboard. It is not an Android smartphone and has no current app-store ecosystem.
The FCC record identifies EX108 documentation under FCC ID IHDT56MD1. Do not confuse it with the related EX109, which appears in some listings and manuals as a separate model.

Release period and variants
The EX108 belongs to Motorola’s 2011 MOTOKEY generation. Databases give different June, August and third-quarter dates because announcement and retail timing varied by market. Latin American and carrier-branded versions, including Movistar examples, exist. Check the label beneath the battery rather than trusting a marketplace title.
Keyboard, screen and everyday features
Physical messaging
The full keyboard was faster for SMS and short emails than numeric predictive text in its era. The small, non-touch screen and feature-phone software make it nothing like a modern BlackBerry or smartphone.
Camera, music and radio
The fixed-focus 2 MP camera is suitable for simple snapshots, not modern photography. Music playback, Bluetooth file/audio support, a 3.5 mm jack and FM radio are useful period features; FM may require wired headphones as the antenna. A microSD card is the practical way to carry music or photos.

Can it work on a network today?
The answer depends on your country and operator, but the technical limitation is fixed: this handset has GSM/EDGE 2G radios only. It cannot gain LTE, VoLTE, 5G, Wi‑Fi calling or 3G through an update.
United States
Assume it is a poor primary-phone choice unless you independently verify a still-operating compatible 2G GSM service. An unlocked SIM does not turn a 2G phone into an LTE phone. Motorola’s current compatibility checker covers contemporary devices and is not proof that EX108 service is supported: Motorola compatibility page.
Other countries
Check the exact country, operator, GSM bands, SIM format and whether voice service remains on GSM. Test registration, a call and SMS before relying on the handset.
Battery and memory-card realities
The removable 750 mAh battery is convenient, but a fifteen-year-old original cell may be exhausted, swollen or unsafe. Historical specifications quote roughly eight hours of maximum talk time; that is not an expectation for used hardware. Stop using a battery that is swollen, leaking, hot or causing abrupt shutdowns. Replacement cells may be old stock or mislabeled, so verify the model, voltage, connector and return policy.

Because listings disagree on 16 GB versus 32 GB microSD support, use a modest, reputable card and test it. If it is not recognized, try a smaller card, compatible formatting and clean contacts.

The FCC page for FCC ID IHDT56MD1 lists EX108 material and an EX108 user manual dated October 10, 2011. An archival index describes a roughly 69-page MOTOKEY MINI guide: Manualzz index. Use the FCC record as the primary trail; third-party mirrors are not necessarily Motorola-hosted. The guide covers SIM and battery installation, charging, keypad lock, messaging, Bluetooth, FM, camera, microSD and reset procedures.
Used-buying checklist
- Confirm “EX108” on the label under the battery, not EX109.
- Check IMEI, regulatory label, carrier branding and SIM-lock status.
- Ask for a power-on, charging and network-registration test.
- Test every keyboard key, display, speaker, microphone, camera, Bluetooth, FM, headphone jack and microSD slot.
- Inspect battery swelling, corrosion, charging-port looseness and liquid damage.
- Require a return option; “turns on” does not mean the phone is network-compatible or battery-healthy.
A sample eBay listing observed at US$67.99 plus US$6.99 shipping is a volatile asking-price snapshot, not a market average: example listing.
Who should buy it?
- Good fit: Motorola collectors, period props, QWERTY enthusiasts, offline music/radio use, or confirmed local GSM service.
- Poor fit: U.S. primary use, emergency reliance, modern messaging apps, navigation, banking, authentication, secure web access or smartphone photography.
Better alternatives for daily use
Choose a currently supported 4G feature phone with LTE, VoLTE, current bands and carrier certification. For physical typing, consider a later 4G keypad phone, a modern smartphone with a Bluetooth keyboard, or another device whose cellular support is explicitly current. None is automatically equivalent to the EX108’s combination of QWERTY simplicity and 2011 design.
The Bottom Line
Verdict: buy the EX108 for collecting, nostalgia, props, offline features or verified local 2G service—not as a generally usable 2026 phone. Its keyboard and removable battery remain appealing, but network shutdowns, aged cells and obsolete software outweigh its low used-market price for most daily users.
