Motorola announced it on November 5, 2025, with sales starting soon afterward in at least the UK and parts of Europe. The launch is now historical: the useful question is what Motorola’s roughly 6-mm design achieved, what it may have required the company to compromise, and whether the phone was a convincing alternative to Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge and Apple’s iPhone Air.
What Motorola actually announced
Pre-launch stories described an unnamed Motorola handset as a rival to the thin-phone designs from Samsung and Apple. The finished product was the Edge 70. “Ultra-thin” was a design description, not its official model name.

The Edge 70 should also be kept separate from later reports about a possible Motorola “Edge 70 Ultra” flagship. Those reports concerned a different, unconfirmed model and do not change what launched on November 5.

How thin is the Edge 70?
Motorola’s product-news material describes the Edge 70 as 5.99 mm thick, commonly rounded in coverage to 6 mm, and calls it the thinnest device in its category. See Motorola’s product-news archive at motorolanews.com.
That number should be read as the advertised body measurement. It does not automatically describe the phone’s thickest point, because a camera module can protrude beyond the chassis. Motorola’s claim also uses a category definition rather than proving that the Edge 70 is the thinnest phone ever made. Comparisons are meaningful only when the phones use the same measurement method and treatment of camera bumps.
This is not Motorola’s first experiment with extreme thinness. The 2016 Moto Z was reported at approximately 5.19 mm without an attached Moto Mod. Ars Technica’s contemporary account is available at Ars Technica. Moto Mods also showed why chassis thickness is only part of the carrying experience: accessories could make the complete device much thicker.

What is confirmed and what was only reported before launch?
The available launch coverage supports the product identity, date and headline thickness. Some widely repeated specifications appeared first in pre-launch reporting and should not be presented as final Motorola specifications without an official regional specification sheet.

| U.S. launch and carrier lineup | Not established | No broad U.S. availability claim should be inferred |
The battery and charging figures came from pre-launch coverage such as Techlusive. They are useful context for what Motorola was expected to fit into a 6-mm body, but they are not a substitute for a final regional product page or manual.
What thinness changes in everyday use
Pocket comfort and handling
A thinner chassis can reduce visual and pocket bulk and may feel easier to hold one-handed. Those benefits are most apparent when the phone is used without a case. A protective case can add several millimeters and largely erase the perceived advantage, depending on its design.

Battery and charging hardware
Thin phones leave less internal volume for cells, charging components and thermal spreaders. A reported 4,800 mAh capacity would be notable for this class, but capacity alone cannot establish endurance. Screen brightness, modem efficiency, software, camera use and gaming loads determine how long the phone actually lasts. Independent testing and the charger supplied in each market matter more than the headline number.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Heat and sustained performance
A slim body can make heat dissipation harder during gaming, video recording or other sustained workloads. That does not prove the Edge 70 overheats; it means performance and surface temperature need to be judged from measured tests rather than from thickness or processor assumptions.
Cameras, structure and repair
Large camera sensors and telephoto lenses need depth, so a thin phone may rely on a more prominent camera island or less ambitious camera hardware. Thinness also raises practical questions about frame stiffness, antenna placement, wireless-charging components and repair access. None of those questions can be answered by the 5.99-mm figure alone, and the cited material does not establish a durability or repairability result.

Availability: announcement date is not the same as sale date
November 5, 2025 was the announcement date. Later coverage says the Edge 70 went on sale shortly afterward, with UK and European availability discussed by reviewers including TechRadar and T3. Motorola’s timing, storage options, retailers and network support can differ by country.
The available evidence does not establish a complete U.S. launch, a universal carrier lineup, current August 2026 stock, or a single worldwide price. Buyers should verify the exact country, model number, network bands, warranty and return policy before ordering. Motorola’s news archive is a reference, not a verified current purchase page: motorolanews.com/category/product/moto-g/.
How it fits against Samsung and Apple
Motorola positioned the Edge 70 alongside Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge and Apple’s iPhone Air as a design-led alternative to conventional flagship phones. Thinness is the common idea, not proof that the three phones have equivalent hardware or value.
| Decision point | Edge 70 | Galaxy S25 Edge / iPhone Air |
|---|---|---|
| Design goal | Approximately 6-mm advertised body; Motorola’s category-thinness claim | Thin-phone variants from Samsung and Apple; exact like-for-like measurement is not established here |
| Battery and endurance | 4,800 mAh was reported before launch; final capacity and independent endurance require market-specific verification | Do not infer superiority from thinness; compare tested endurance and official regional specifications |
| Cameras | Pre-launch reports mentioned a 50-megapixel main camera with optical stabilization and an ultrawide camera; final configuration should be checked by market | Compare sensor sizes, stabilization, processing and lens selection, not camera count alone |
| Performance | Thinness does not establish sustained speed or temperature | Use independent workload tests when choosing between models |
| Price and availability | Regional launch and current pricing are not established uniformly | Prices, storage and availability must be compared in the same country |
That framework avoids the most common mistake in thin-phone coverage: treating a smaller thickness number as an overall victory. A thicker phone can offer more thermal headroom, larger camera hardware, a bigger battery or a more robust case without compromising the features a particular buyer values.
Who should consider the Edge 70?
- Thin-phone enthusiasts: You value a low-bulk design more than maximum hardware headroom.
- Frequent pocket or one-handed users: The chassis profile matters in daily handling, especially with a slim case.
- Design-focused shoppers: You want a Motorola alternative to Samsung’s and Apple’s thin variants.
Who may be better served by a thicker phone?
- Heavy gamers and sustained-workload users: Thermal behavior and long-session performance may matter more than millimeters.
- Mobile photographers: Larger sensors and telephoto cameras generally need more internal depth.
- Rugged-case users: A thick case can remove much of the Edge 70’s ergonomic advantage.
- Long-term owners: Verify repair options, update commitments, replacement costs and local support before choosing a thin design.
- Battery-first buyers: Wait for final capacity and independent endurance results rather than relying on pre-launch figures.
Bottom line
Motorola did launch the phone behind the “ultra-thin” November story: the Edge 70, announced on November 5, 2025 and advertised at 5.99 mm. It was a genuine attempt to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge and Apple’s iPhone Air, but its headline thickness is a starting point, not a complete buying verdict. The important checks are the final regional specifications, tested battery life, sustained performance, camera capability, case impact and local availability. The Edge 70 makes the most sense for buyers who actively value a slim body; buyers who prioritize cameras, gaming, repairability or maximum endurance should compare conventional flagships on those criteria instead.
