You may be able to make your PC’s USB ports more useful without replacing the motherboard: connect your case’s front ports to a matching internal header, use a compatible internal Type-C header for front USB-C, or install a PCIe USB card. Which option works depends on the exact motherboard, case cable, and available expansion space.
First, check what your motherboard and case actually support
An empty-looking motherboard header is not automatically a usable USB connection. Find the exact motherboard model and revision, then use its manual to identify each internal USB header, pinout, supported generation, and number of ports. Next, identify the connector on the case’s front-panel cable. The cable and header must match; do not plug it into a header based only on appearance.

Motherboard manuals show how much board-specific details can vary. For example, the Supermicro X14SAE/X14SAE-F manual describes USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 Gen 1 headers that each support two USB connections for front access. That is an example, not a specification for other boards.

1. Put an existing internal USB header to work
If your case has front USB ports that do not work, check whether their cable is connected to the correct motherboard header. If it is not connected, or is connected to the wrong header, matching it to the proper one may enable the ports without adding a card.

- Identify the motherboard. Use the model and revision printed on the board or shown in system information.
- Find the USB header diagram in the manual. Check the header label, pin layout, USB generation, and how many ports it supports.
- Match the case cable. Confirm that its connector fits the documented header and is intended for that header type. Do not force a connector.
- Connect it with the PC powered off. Follow the manual’s orientation and installation guidance, then test the front ports.
A USB 2.0 internal header can serve compatible USB 2.0 front-panel devices, but it is not a general high-speed USB upgrade. For example, the USBINT5PIN24 is a USB 2.0 5-pin cable for compatible internal USB devices; it does not turn a USB 2.0 header into a faster USB connection.
2. Connect front USB-C to a matching Type-C header
A front-panel USB-C port needs a compatible internal connection on the motherboard, or an expansion card with the required internal connector. Do not confuse that internal header with a USB-C port on the rear of the motherboard: the rear port is for an external device and does not, by itself, connect the case’s front-panel cable.

Check both ends before connecting anything: the motherboard manual must document the appropriate internal Type-C header, and the case’s USB-C cable or module must match it. The ASRock B850M-C manual, for instance, documents one front-panel Type-C USB 3.2 Gen 1 header for connecting a USB 3.2 Gen 1 module. This is a board-specific example, not a universal feature.
If the motherboard has no matching header, an adapter may be an option only if it is designed for the exact source header and case connector. Do not assume an adapter preserves every speed or feature. In particular, a USB 2.0 header cable is not a substitute for a high-speed Type-C connection.

3. Add USB ports with a PCIe card
A PCIe USB card is a route to additional rear-facing ports, and some cards also provide internal headers for case ports. Before choosing one, check that the motherboard has a free PCIe slot, the case has room for the card, its height and bracket fit, its internal connector matches your case cable if needed, and the card supports your operating system. Check whether it needs SATA or Molex supplemental power, especially if you plan to connect bus-powered devices.
These manufacturer-listed cards illustrate how port combinations vary. Their stated speeds are maximums for the specified connections, not a guarantee of the speed any particular system will achieve.

Those specifications describe the named products, not every PCIe card. Actual transfer rates depend on the card, host connection, cable, and peripheral; a high-rated port cannot make a slower component faster.

Read USB generation labels carefully
USB product names may use labels such as “USB 3.0,” “USB 3.1,” and “USB 3.2.” Do not infer a port’s exact capability from an isolated label: verify the generation and connection type in the motherboard or card documentation. The cited PEXUSB3S2EI page describes USB 3.2 Gen 1 support up to 5 Gbps, while the PEXUSB312EIC lists different maximums for its USB-C, USB-A, and internal-header connections. The limit for a working connection is constrained by its compatible host, cable, and device.
