Most U.S. adults surveyed were not using AI to choose holiday gifts in 2025, according to SurveyMonkey. Its November survey found 85% reported no AI use for gift selection. That measures reported behavior during one holiday season—not whether Americans are ready to use AI in 2026, or why many did not use it.
What did the survey find about AI and gift shopping?
In SurveyMonkey’s 2025 survey, 85% of respondents said they were not using AI for gift selection. Views about possibly using it later were divided: 44% said they might consider asking AI to generate gift ideas, while 41% said they would not.

Those figures describe different things. The 85% figure concerns reported use in 2025; the 44% and 41% figures concern potential future use. The survey does not establish how many people would actually use an AI tool in a later season.

|---|---|
| Gen Z | 19% |
| Millennials | 15% |

What holiday shopping concerns did respondents report?
AI use was only one part of the survey’s picture of holiday shopping. Respondents also identified practical frustrations and uncertainty around gift-giving:
- 44% named overcrowding as a leading holiday frustration.
- 40% were concerned about not knowing what gifts to buy.
- 27% named shipping delays as their biggest worry.
- 74% said they had received a gift they disliked.
- 87% agreed that the thought matters more than the gift itself.
The gift-selection figures help explain why generating gift ideas might appeal to some people, but the survey does not show that gift uncertainty drove anyone to use—or avoid—AI.

Does this mean Americans do not trust AI to pick gifts?
No. The survey reports non-use and willingness to consider future use; it does not directly measure trust as the reason for either response. It does not establish whether people avoided AI because of privacy, accuracy, awareness, access, trust, or another factor. Non-use alone cannot distinguish among those explanations.
How was the survey conducted, and what are its limits?
SurveyMonkey’s report, “2025 holiday shopping trends and insights: Vibe shopping, crowds, and gift anxiety, was published November 26, 2025. The survey was fielded November 4, 2025, among 1,679 U.S. adults ages 18 and older. Respondents came from a non-probability online panel. SurveyMonkey says it weighted results by age, race, sex, education, and geography using the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, and reports a modeled error estimate of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
The modeled error estimate does not make this a probability sample or remove the limits of an online panel. The findings are self-reported attitudes and behavior, not a controlled test of shopping assistants or a direct measure of AI trust. They describe the 2025 holiday season and should not be treated as a measure of adoption or readiness in 2026.
