Start with Wounding Stone on the opening Tiel route. It is the clearest first pickup for a new character because it adds perforation to melee without asking you to redesign your build. After that, choose by role rather than by a universal tier list: Parasitic Stone is the sustain option, Acolyte’s Stone spends Resolve for an active charged-light ability, Auspicious Stone supports melee criticals, Emberseed Stone adds burn to sidearm shots, Volatile Fragment helps against groups, and Siegebreaker’s Stone plus Retribution Stone form a ranged stagger-and-riposte pairing.
No published source establishes one Tarstone as the best choice for every weapon, shell or playstyle. The routes and upgrade advice below are practical early-game recommendations, and named effects can change with patches. The community system guide identifies Hotfix 1.000.011, while the official update notes confirm progression, economy and Tarstone changes, so treat launch-era rankings or exact percentages with caution.

Which Tarstones should you get first?
Your first choice should solve the problem your current build actually has. Use this table as a route planner, not as a permanent tier list.
Recommended Free Tools
| Tarstone | Best early role | Documented pickup route | Why choose it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wounding Stone | Melee damage support | Opening grass/Tiel route | Adds perforation to melee and is the simplest first Combat pickup. | Its value depends on using a compatible melee weapon. |
| Parasitic Stone | Sustain while clearing | Pool-area detour near the Obsidian Lathe | Builds leech stacks on kills, helping recovery during ordinary encounters. | The guide says its healing cap arrives quickly; rank two is generally enough for the opening. |
| Acolyte’s Stone | Resolve-based active ability | Buy from Merrick after selling a marsh pearl | Provides a charged-light ability that consumes Resolve. | It competes for Resolve with your other active uses. |
| Auspicious Stone | Melee critical chance | Mushroom Village candle offerings | Supports a melee build that is already built around critical hits. | It does not replace a sustain, status or ranged-control option. |
| Emberseed Stone | Sidearm status damage | Mushroom Village area | Adds burning to sidearm shots. | Useful only when you regularly fire the compatible sidearm. |
| Volatile Fragment | Crowd clearing | Mushroom Village Gate route | Can trigger an explosion when you kill an enemy. | Less useful against isolated targets or when kills are infrequent. |
| Siegebreaker’s Stone | Ranged stagger | Mushroom Village and its gate approaches | Helps a ranged setup break enemy balance. | Needs a compatible ranged weapon and a plan for what follows the break. |
| Retribution Stone | Post-break riposte | Mushroom Village and its gate approaches | Adds a riposte after an enemy is broken, pairing naturally with Siegebreaker’s. | Its payoff is conditional on causing and exploiting a stagger. |
The pickup locations and role descriptions in this table come from the first-hour Tarstones guide. They describe documented early options, not a claim that every player should equip the same eight stones.

How Tarstones fit a build
Tarstones are support pieces that fill different combat, infusion, ability and utility roles. A single build can hold multiple stones in separate slots, so the practical question is usually “which role is missing?” rather than “which gem is strongest?” The system guide explains the broader slot and compatibility rules at MortalShell2.lol’s Tarstones guide.
Passive effects versus Resolve spenders
Wounding, Parasitic, Auspicious, Emberseed, Volatile Fragment and Siegebreaker’s generally improve what you are already doing: striking with a melee weapon, killing enemies, firing a sidearm or forcing a stagger. Acolyte’s is different because its charged-light ability spends Resolve. Pick it when you deliberately want an active button and can afford that resource cost; do not select it merely because an ability sounds stronger on paper.
Weapon compatibility comes first
Many Tarstones are weapon-specific. A Combat stone cannot simply be forced onto an incompatible weapon, and a sidearm infusion has no value if that sidearm is not in your current loadout. Before paying for ranks, check the stone’s compatible weapon category and compare it with what you actually carry. This avoids investing in a stone that looks attractive in the menu but cannot contribute to your present setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the role axes that matter
- Damage pattern: melee perforation, critical hits, burning shots or kill explosions.
- Control: ranged stagger and the riposte that follows a successful break.
- Survival: leech stacks from Parasitic Stone during routine kills.
- Resource use: passive effects leave Resolve alone; Acolyte’s converts Resolve into a charged-light action.
- Route cost: a nearby pickup may be better than a theoretically stronger stone that requires a risky detour before you are ready.
- Investment horizon: a rank upgrade is easier to justify when the stone will remain in your build for several areas.
Best early Tarstones by playstyle
Wounding Stone: the default first pickup
Follow the opening grass route associated with Tiel and take Wounding Stone first. The first-hour guide lists it as the initial Combat choice and describes its effect as adding perforation to melee. That makes it a low-friction recommendation: you do not need to change your route to a merchant, spend Resolve to activate it, or build around a rare status interaction.
Choose Wounding when your plan is to stay close, attack consistently and use a compatible melee weapon. If your current weapon does not accept the stone, do not equip it just because it is the recommended first stop; take the route as a pickup, then wait until your weapon setup can use it.

Parasitic Stone: safer clearing and limited sustain
Detour toward the pool area near the Obsidian Lathe for Parasitic Stone if healing between encounters is your immediate concern. Its documented effect is leech stacks on kills, making it most useful while clearing groups of ordinary enemies rather than during a boss fight where kills may be unavailable.
The guide specifically warns that Parasitic’s healing cap arrives quickly and describes rank two as sufficient for the opening. That is a reason to stop at rank two while you are learning the area, not a reason to spend deeply on it before you know whether the sustain remains relevant to your shell, weapon and healing pattern.
Acolyte’s Stone: an active Resolve decision
After obtaining a marsh pearl, sell it to Merrick to access Acolyte’s Stone. The stone provides a charged-light ability that spends Resolve. This is the right early choice for a player who already understands when to bank Resolve and when to convert it into an attack.
If your build relies on another Resolve-consuming action, compare the two uses before buying. Acolyte’s is not a free damage increase: every activation competes with your other Resolve decisions, and its value depends on landing the charged light often enough to justify that cost.
Auspicious Stone: melee critical focus
Look in Mushroom Village for the candle-offering route to Auspicious Stone. It is documented as an early Support option that improves melee critical chance. Take it when your weapon, timing and existing bonuses already make critical attacks a central part of your damage plan.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Auspicious is a specialization pickup. If you are still being defeated because you lack recovery or cannot interrupt dangerous enemies, Parasitic or a stagger-oriented stone may solve a more urgent problem. Critical chance becomes a better first detour once your basic weapon and survivability routine are stable.
Emberseed Stone: sidearm burn
Emberseed Stone is the Mushroom Village choice for a sidearm-centered setup. It adds burning to sidearm shots, so its impact depends on firing often and using the compatible weapon. If your sidearm is mainly an emergency tool, the route may not repay the time spent reaching it.
Burn also changes how you evaluate a kill: the status effect may matter over the length of an encounter, while Wounding’s melee benefit is immediate on each compatible strike. Pick Emberseed when keeping distance and applying repeated shots is an intentional part of your combat loop.
Siegebreaker’s Stone and Retribution Stone: a ranged chain
Mushroom Village and the gate approaches contain two stones that work as a sequence. Siegebreaker’s Stone supplies ranged stagger; Retribution Stone adds a riposte after a break. Together they support a plan of building stagger from range, then converting the opening into a follow-up attack.
They are not interchangeable. Siegebreaker’s has value whenever a ranged hit helps break an enemy, while Retribution’s payoff only exists after that break occurs and you can reach or execute the riposte. If you are not using a compatible ranged weapon, choose another route first.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Volatile Fragment: pressure against groups
Take Volatile Fragment from the Mushroom Village Gate route if groups are the encounters slowing you down. Its documented effect can create an explosion on kills, allowing one successful takedown to pressure nearby enemies. The effect is naturally less impressive against a lone target, a boss or a fight in which you cannot secure kills quickly.
A practical pickup route for a new character
The following order minimizes early indecision while leaving room to branch. It is based on the locations described in the first-hour guide, not on an official developer ranking.
- Start on the Tiel route. Collect Wounding Stone in the opening grass section. Equip it if your melee weapon is compatible and continue learning your basic attack and dodge rhythm.
- Decide whether sustain is your immediate problem. If you are spending too many healing resources between fights, make the pool-area detour near the Obsidian Lathe for Parasitic Stone. If ordinary encounters are already comfortable, keep moving instead of taking the detour automatically.
- Visit Merrick with a marsh pearl if you want an active ability. Sell the pearl and evaluate Acolyte’s Stone against your existing Resolve spenders before committing.
- Use Mushroom Village as the specialization branch. Choose Auspicious for melee criticals, Emberseed for repeated sidearm shots, or Volatile Fragment when kill explosions solve your crowd-control problem.
- Add the ranged pair only when the weapon supports it. Siegebreaker’s Stone is the control pickup; Retribution Stone is the follow-up. You do not need both if your ranged setup does not regularly create breaks.
- Track which stones are actually equipped. Because multiple stones can occupy different slots, keep a small working set for your current weapon rather than carrying every new option into rank investment.
Unlock Tarstone upgrades before grinding ranks
The most important progression choice is not which stone reaches rank three first; it is unlocking the system that lets ranks advance. The beginner guide directs players to the southeastern Fallgrim Outskirts and the Mushroom Village Gate dungeon for the progression item that enables Tarstone upgrades at the Tar Forge in Marrow Keep. It states that this item is reachable before the final boss. See the route details in the Mortal Shell II beginner guide.
Why the unlock timing matters
Before the unlock, an equipped Tarstone can reach the rank-two experience threshold but cannot continue toward rank three. The guide warns that experience earned while the next rank is locked is wasted. In practical terms, stop treating the rank bar as harmless background progress: if you plan to spend time clearing enemies, unlock the Tar Forge path first so that your effort contributes to the rank you intend to buy.

- Deliver the required Etching Needles to Franz as described by the first-hour route.
- Equip one rank-one stone that matches your current weapon and earn its progression through normal play.
- When it reaches the rank-two threshold, visit the Tar Forge in Marrow Keep.
- Pay 100 Gold for rank two. The 100 Gold figure is the beginner guide’s stated cost for this rank.
- Remove that stone from your priority slot and repeat the process with another rank-one stone that you genuinely plan to use.
This rotation lets several useful stones reach rank two without draining your entire purse on a single experiment. The first-hour guide recommends reserving rank-three investment for stones that remain in the final loadout rather than pushing every discovery to the deepest available rank.

How to decide whether a deeper upgrade is worth it
Use a simple three-question check before spending beyond rank two:
- Will the stone stay equipped? A stone chosen for one early area may be replaced once you obtain a better-compatible weapon or change shells.
- Does the upgrade improve your actual loop? Parasitic is valuable when kills produce meaningful recovery; Emberseed matters when you fire enough shots for burn to contribute; Retribution matters when you reliably create breaks.
- Is the opportunity cost acceptable? Gold used on a rank-three favorite cannot also rotate several other stones through rank two.
A practical loadout often has one answer to each current problem: a melee or ranged damage effect, a control or status option, and a sustain or active ability. That is more robust than spending all resources on three stones that perform the same job.
Patch and version cautions
Do not copy an old percentage chart or assume a launch ranking is still accurate. The community system guide reports Hotfix 1.000.011 and notes that Tarstones are subject to weapon and build context. A separate community guide records balance changes to Parasitic, Grudge, Bulwark, Clerik’s and Squall. The official Mortal Shell 2 patch notes document broader Week 1 changes to progression and economy, the introduction of Fragile Tarstones and changes to named stones.

Common mistakes and fixes
Grinding a locked rank
Symptom: your stone stops progressing toward the next rank before you have reached the Tar Forge unlock. Fix: stop farming that stone, complete the Fallgrim Outskirts and Mushroom Village Gate progression route, then resume with the upgrade system active.
Choosing a stone your weapon cannot use
Symptom: the stone is attractive in the menu but cannot be equipped or has no effect on your current attacks. Fix: verify compatibility first; switch to a supported weapon only if that change fits your build, otherwise rotate to a stone designed for what you already carry.
Spending all Gold on one experiment
Symptom: one rank-two or rank-three stone consumes the funds you needed for other useful options. Fix: use the documented 100-Gold rank-two cycle, rotate several rank-one stones, and reserve deeper spending for the stone that survives your route and weapon changes.

Quick Recap
Bottom line: a short decision tree
- Take Wounding Stone first on the opening Tiel route if your melee weapon supports it.
- Choose Parasitic Stone for early clearing sustain, or Acolyte’s Stone if an active Resolve spender fits your combat plan.
- At Mushroom Village, branch to Auspicious for melee criticals, Emberseed for sidearm burn, Volatile Fragment for groups, or Siegebreaker’s plus Retribution for ranged stagger and riposte.
- Unlock Tarstone upgrading before farming rank progression, pay 100 Gold for rank two, rotate other stones through that rank, and push rank three only on equipment that remains in your build.
