Mortal Kombat: Armageddon Character Roster and Fighting Styles Explained

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon has 62 playable characters on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The Wii release is commonly reported as adding Khameleon for a platform-specific total of 63. Those figures describe the selectable roster, not the additional fighters you can build in Kreate-A-Fighter.

“Fighting styles” in Armageddon are not one universal mode. A character’s move list contains character-specific hand-to-hand style and weapon techniques, while ground combat and the returning aerial combat are broader systems that apply across the game. The safest way to identify a fighter’s exact style, weapon and practical role is to read that character’s in-game move list or a verified guide entry.

Armageddon’s roster at a glance

The most authoritative contemporaneous count is 62. The 2006 Prima Official Game Guide says its character guide covers all 62 fighters and describes the total as “an astonishing 62 characters.” WorldCat’s catalog record for the same guide also summarizes coverage of all 62 playable characters, their styles, weapons and finishing moves.

Version or source Playable-character count How to interpret it
PlayStation 2 62 Main roster count supported by the 2006 Prima guide and contemporaneous coverage.
Xbox 62 Main roster count supported by the same guide and era-specific reporting.
Wii 63 reported Later reference pages commonly identify Khameleon as an additional Wii fighter. Treat this as a platform-specific exception rather than a universal Armageddon total.
Archived feature-page wording More than 50 A broad promotional description from 2006, not a contradiction of the later, more precise 62-character count.

The archived game feature page lists PlayStation 2 and Xbox and gives October 2006 as the release month for both. Its “more than 50” wording was accurate as a preview description, but the 62 figure is the useful number when discussing the released main roster on those platforms.

Why different roster totals appear online

“More than 50” was preview language

Marketing and preview pages often used rounded language before launch. “More than 50 playable fighters” communicates scale without promising a final number. It should not be used as the definitive release count when a contemporaneous guide identifies 62.

The 62 figure is for the PS2 and Xbox releases

When an article or video says Armageddon has 62 characters, it should specify PlayStation 2 and Xbox. That qualification prevents the number from being mistaken for an all-platform total.

The Wii exception needs a platform label

Search-indexed game-reference pages report that the Wii version adds Khameleon, producing 63 playable fighters. This detail is less firmly documented than the 62-character guide and catalog records, so use “the Wii version is reported to add Khameleon” rather than presenting 63 as the count for every edition.

Custom fighters are not part of the fixed roster count

Kreate-A-Fighter lets you construct a new combatant, but a created fighter does not increase the number of prebuilt roster entries. Keep the fixed roster and the creation mode separate when comparing editions or explaining how many characters the game contains.

What “fighting styles” mean in Armageddon

Armageddon combines individual move sets with system-wide combat mechanics. The Prima guide’s catalog description says it covers moves for all styles and weapons, along with character strengths, weaknesses, matchups and finishing moves. Its indexed introduction separately discusses aerial and ground combat. Those are different layers of the game.

Character-specific style moves

Each fighter’s move list identifies the style techniques assigned to that character. A style is best understood as a package of attacks and animations that gives the fighter a particular range, rhythm or tactical emphasis. The label by itself does not tell you whether the character is easy to use, dominant at close range or effective against a particular opponent; those conclusions require the actual move list and matchup information.

Weapon moves are a separate character-specific layer

Armageddon also gives characters weapon techniques. The weapon shown in a fighter’s move list changes the effective distance, timing and attack shapes available to that character. Do not infer a weapon assignment from a character’s story, costume or previous appearances. Check the game’s move display or a specific guide entry.

Ground combat is a shared system

Ground combat describes the normal arena exchanges that happen on the floor: movement, attacks, blocks, throws, special moves and weapon or style transitions shown in the character’s controls. It is not a single style that one fighter owns. A character’s unique style and weapon determine what that fighter can do inside the ground-combat system.

Aerial combat is another shared system

The guide’s introduction calls out aerial combat as a return reminiscent of Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. In practical terms, aerial play is a system-level option layered onto the roster, not a replacement for a character’s individual style. When comparing fighters, record aerial options separately from the style and weapon listed for the ground move set.

How to identify a fighter’s exact style and weapon

The available guide excerpts support the existence of style and weapon coverage, but they do not provide a verified fighter-by-fighter assignment table. That means a reliable character entry should be built from the relevant in-game move list or a checked page in the printed guide, not from assumptions based on lore.

  1. Open the character’s move list. Use the game’s command display for the fighter you want to study. Record the style name exactly as shown rather than translating it into a nickname.
  2. Separate style and weapon sections. Note which commands belong to the hand-to-hand style and which belong to the weapon set. This avoids treating a weapon attack as part of the character’s ordinary style.
  3. Mark ground and aerial commands independently. Aerial attacks and transitions should be listed under the system category, even when they are performed by the same fighter.
  4. Group attacks by range and purpose. Identify close-range strings, mid-range pokes, longer-reaching weapon attacks, launchers, defensive tools and finishing commands only when the move list confirms them.
  5. Check strengths and weaknesses against the actual entry. The Prima guide advertises character strengths, weaknesses, arenas and preferred matchups as comparison information. Do not substitute a general reputation or a competitive ranking for those documented details.
  6. Record the platform. If the character is Khameleon, state that the entry concerns the Wii version. For the standard roster, state whether the reference applies to PlayStation 2 or Xbox.

A useful format for a character-by-character guide

If you are making your own roster chart, use the same fields for every fighter. Consistent fields make it possible to compare characters without pretending that unverified assignments are facts.

Field What to record Why it matters
Roster status Standard fighter, platform-specific fighter or created fighter Prevents the 62/63 platform issue from being mixed with Kreate-A-Fighter.
Style shown in the move list Exact in-game style label Names vary by character; a guessed label can misidentify the move set.
Weapon shown Exact weapon label and its command section Weapon attacks can change reach and timing independently of the hand-to-hand style.
Ground role Observed range, pressure, defense or transition function Explains how the style operates in ordinary arena exchanges.
Aerial options Verified aerial attacks or transitions Keeps the shared aerial system distinct from the individual style.
Strengths and weaknesses Only claims supported by the move list or a checked guide entry Avoids inventing rankings or matchup claims.
Finishers Commands documented for that character or mode Separates character information from the shared Kreate-A-Fatality feature.

How Kreate-A-Fatality changes the finisher question

The archived feature page says players can create a fatality by stringing attacks together. This is the shared Kreate-A-Fatality feature: you assemble a finishing sequence from available attacks rather than assuming every fighter retains a completely separate classic fatality list.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That distinction matters when reading older character guides. A page that lists style moves, weapon commands and finishers may be describing the fighter’s command set, while Kreate-A-Fatality describes a system available across the game. Do not use the creation system as evidence that every character has an identical traditional fatality catalog.

Modes that put the roster in context

Kreate-A-Fighter

This mode lets you build a custom combatant. It expands the practical number of fighters you can experiment with, but it does not alter the published roster count. A created character should be labeled as custom when documenting style or weapon choices.

Kreate-A-Fatality

Players string attacks together to design a fatality. It is a system feature, not a separate roster entry and not proof that every standard character uses the same finishing moves.

Konquest

The archived feature page describes an expanded Konquest mode. It provides a story-driven way to encounter the game’s world and characters, but its existence does not change the number of playable roster slots.

Blaze as boss

The same feature page identifies Blaze as the boss. Boss status is a gameplay role; it should not be confused with the platform-specific Khameleon roster note or with a custom fighter made in Kreate-A-Fighter.

Common mistakes when explaining Armageddon’s styles

  • Calling aerial combat a character style. Aerial combat is a broader system described separately from individual style and weapon moves.
  • Publishing one universal roster number. Use 62 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and qualify the reported 63-character Wii total.
  • Guessing style assignments from character identity. Verify the label in the move list or the relevant guide entry.
  • Counting custom fighters as part of the fixed roster. Creation tools add possibilities, not prebuilt roster slots.
  • Assuming the promotional “every character” wording is literal across all editions. The guide’s phrase about every character in the series is promotional; the reported Wii/Khameleon distinction makes platform qualification necessary.
  • Turning a style label into a ranking. A style name does not establish competitive strength, ease of use or matchup superiority.
  • Treating the classic fatality structure as unchanged. Kreate-A-Fatality is explicitly part of Armageddon’s design and should be described as a shared creation feature.

Which edition should a roster reference identify?

For a straightforward roster discussion, identify the edition in the first sentence: PlayStation 2 and Xbox use the 62-character count supported by the 2006 guide, while the Wii version is reported to include Khameleon as a 63rd playable fighter. If a style or weapon chart is based on a particular move list, name that platform alongside the chart because platform-specific characters and control differences can affect what a reader expects to find.

There is no need to inflate the number with custom fighters or to downgrade it to the preview-era “more than 50” wording. The clearest description is platform-specific, source-conscious and explicit about what counts as a playable roster slot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for players and guide writers

Use 62 playable characters for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox releases, with a qualified note that the Wii version is reported to add Khameleon for 63. Explain fighting styles as character-specific move packages that coexist with weapon techniques. Describe ground and aerial combat as shared systems, and treat Kreate-A-Fatality as a separate, game-wide finishing feature. For exact fighter assignments, consult the move list or a verified character entry rather than reconstructing styles from memory.
