More Daily Steps Linked to Fewer Mental Health Problems in Adolescents

In a study of 5,515 early adolescents in the United States, higher average daily step counts were associated with lower mental health problem scores one year later. The finding describes an association, not proof that walking more improves mental health or a clinical step target for young people.

What did the study find?

The study, “Physical Activity and Adolescent Brain Structure, Mental Health, and Academic Outcomes,” was published in JAMA Network Open on 1 October 2026. Researchers analyzed participants in the US Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study who had available step-count and neuroimaging data. Their mean age was 11.93 years, and 47.9% were female.

Participants’ average daily steps were measured with pedometer-based measurements covering the previous three weeks. Their mental health and academic outcomes were assessed one year later. The average step count was 9,595 per day (standard deviation 3,239). Higher step count was associated with a lower total score on the Brief Problem Monitor, a measure of mental health problems: B = −0.080 (SE 0.015; 95% CI −0.109 to −0.052; P < .001). The primary study reports that scores were progressively lower across higher step-count categories than in the under-5,000-steps-per-day reference group.

King’s College London’s summary describes the pattern using groups below 5,000 steps, around 8,000, and 12,000 or more steps a day: reported problem scores were lower in the higher-step groups. The researchers reported no plateau within the range observed. This describes the study sample; it does not establish that every adolescent should reach 8,000 or 12,000 steps, or that the pattern continues indefinitely.

Does this mean more steps improve adolescent mental health?

No causal conclusion follows from this study. It was a prospective observational cohort analysis, not a randomized trial in which researchers assigned young people different activity levels. The study shows that step counts measured at one point were associated with later scores, but it cannot show that the steps caused the difference. As King’s College London notes, adolescents with fewer problems may also have been more active to begin with.

The outcome was a measured mental health problem score. It is not evidence that walking prevents, diagnoses, or treats a mental disorder. The findings also do not establish a clinical step target or show that a particular tracker or walking program improves mental health.

What did researchers find about the brain?

Higher step count was associated with greater cortical thickness in two regions: the paracentral region (B = 0.057, SE 0.016; P < .001) and the rostral anterior cingulate region (B = 0.052, SE 0.016; P = .001). A statistical mediation analysis found that paracentral thickness accounted for part of the association between step count and later mental health problem scores (indirect effect B = −0.002, SE 0.001; 95% CI −0.0045 to −0.0004; P = .02).

Statistical mediation is not proof that changes in this brain region caused a mental health benefit. The result identifies a possible link within the study’s analysis, not a confirmed biological mechanism.

Did more steps relate to school performance?

The main analysis found no association between step count and academic performance one year later. That result concerns the outcomes and analysis in this study; it does not establish that physical activity has no academic effects in other settings or over other time periods.

How far can the findings be applied?

  • Population: Participants came from the US ABCD Study and were early adolescents with the required step-count and neuroimaging data. The results may not generalize equally to all young people or populations.
  • Highest activity levels: Few participants had extremely high step counts, so the observed pattern’s continuation beyond the measured range is uncertain.
  • What was measured: The study assessed pedometer-based steps over the prior three weeks and later mental health scores; it did not test a step prescription, clinical treatment, or consumer tracker.
  • Separate study: These findings are not from the distinct 2026 Fitbit study by Li Niu and colleagues, which analyzed 5,640 participants and internalizing and externalizing symptoms.

What can families take from the findings?

The results support treating everyday movement as a practical topic to explore, not setting a number as a mental health prescription. King’s College London quotes co-author Amanda Paluch describing the goal as finding realistic, sustainable ways to move more, including walking to school, active play, and activities young people enjoy. Those are examples of accessible approaches, not interventions compared in this study.

If a family chooses to track steps, a pedometer can measure the kind of exposure the researchers studied. The paper does not show that tracking itself improves mental health, nor does it recommend a specific device.
