Moonring is a free-to-play, turn-based fantasy RPG on Steam, created by Dene Carter, whom PC Gamer identifies as a co-creator of Fable. The “Zelda” comparison and “10/10” rating in the headline are not verified by the available sources: Moonring is described as a retro, tile-based RPG, and Steam’s user-review percentage is not a critic score.
What Moonring is—and what the comparisons get wrong
Released on Steam on 28 September 2023, Moonring is developed and published by Fluttermind, LLC. Steam describes it as a dark-fantasy, turn-based game with a neon aesthetic, drawing on classic RPGs and roguelikes. PC Gamer’s free-games guide, last updated 1 September 2026, calls it a retro turn-based RPG and connects its developer to the Fable series.

The Fable connection is a creator credit, not evidence that Moonring is a Fable-style action RPG. The game is turn-based and built around tile movement. The sources do not establish a Zelda-like design or a 10/10 rating. Steam’s review indicator reports user sentiment, not a score out of ten from critics.
How the game plays
Moonring sets its open world, Caldera, beneath five moons and the influence of strange gods. You play as the “Dreamless,” a character who can choose a destiny, challenge the established order, or pursue the role of Archon. Its design mixes open-world exploration with dungeons that reconfigure when you leave or die, so dungeon layouts are not presented as fixed routes to memorize.
#1 Best Overall
Exploration is not the only activity. Steam lists trading, stealth, turn-based combat, sailing, ship-to-ship battles and boarding. The game also leans into a low-handholding approach: creator Dene describes it as a love letter to older games, with “true open-world gameplay, and lack of handholding.” Expect to find your own direction rather than being guided through every objective.

Is Moonring really free, and how well reviewed is it?
The base game is listed as free to play on Steam. Steam also displays paid Moonring DX content; the listing viewed showed a localized Korean price, which should not be treated as a universal price.
