Moonquakes vs. earthquakes: how lunar seismic activity differs

Moonquakes are the Moon’s seismic events, but they are not simply smaller versions of Earth earthquakes. Earth’s familiar earthquakes usually come from sudden fault slip driven by tectonic stress and plate motion. Lunar seismicity has several sources: Earth- and Sun-driven tides, cracking from the Moon’s extreme heating and cooling cycle, meteoroid impacts, and faults formed as the Moon cooled and contracted. The result is a different mix of depths, waveforms, durations and hazards.

Moonquakes and earthquakes at a glance

The word moonquake is an umbrella term for seismic vibrations detected on or within the Moon. Some lunar events resemble earthquakes because rock slips along a fault. Others have no single close Earth equivalent, such as deep tidal events, thermal cracking and impact-generated signals.

Feature Earthquakes Moonquakes
Primary causes Usually sudden fault slip after tectonic stress overcomes friction; plate motion supplies much of the long-term stress. Deep tidal deformation, shallow contraction-related faulting, thermal cracking and meteoroid impacts.
Typical lunar source depths identified by NASA Earthquake depth varies by tectonic setting. Shallow events: approximately 50–220 km; deep events: approximately 700–1,000 km.
Signal duration The main shaking commonly lasts tens of seconds to minutes. A moonquake can continue for hours.
Plate boundaries Many damaging earthquakes occur at or near moving plate boundaries, although earthquakes also occur within plates. The Moon has no Earth-style system of moving tectonic plates; its faults reflect cooling, contraction and tidal stresses.
Recorded Apollo evidence Earth has dense, continuously expanding seismic networks. Apollo seismometers recorded thousands of lunar vibrations from 1969 to 1977, including 28 identified shallow moonquakes in the remaining stations analyzed for that period.
Main practical concern Shaking can threaten populated areas, buildings, lifelines and infrastructure. Future landers, habitats, instruments and surface operations must account for an incompletely characterized seismic environment.

That comparison explains why a moonquake’s long ringing does not automatically mean that it releases more energy than an earthquake. Duration, source mechanism, wave propagation and energy are related but distinct properties.

How an earthquake starts on Earth

Stress builds while a fault is locked

The U.S. Geological Survey defines an earthquake as “a sudden slip on a fault.” Tectonic plates move slowly, but friction can hold sections of a fault together. As the surrounding rocks deform, elastic strain accumulates. When the stress exceeds the frictional resistance, the locked section slips and releases stored energy as seismic waves.

This is a repeating cycle: strain accumulation, sudden rupture and elastic rebound, followed by renewed locking. Plate boundaries are the most obvious setting because the plates continuously move relative to one another, but the same basic fault-slip process can occur within a plate when stress is transferred to a weaker fault.

Waves spread through a comparatively efficient planet

The rupture sends vibrations through Earth’s crust and deeper interior. Seismic networks use arrival times and wave characteristics at multiple stations to estimate an event’s location, depth and source. Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, crust and upper mantle also influence how shaking is experienced at the surface, so the same earthquake can produce very different effects from one place to another.

What causes a moonquake?

NASA’s lunar seismic categories show why no single explanation covers all moonquakes. The Moon’s events must be separated by mechanism rather than treated as one lunar version of plate-boundary earthquakes.

Deep moonquakes: tides deform the interior

Deep moonquakes occur hundreds of kilometres below the surface. NASA’s technical summaries place the deep events at approximately 700–1,000 km depth and associate them strongly with gravitational tides raised by Earth; lunar analyses also consider solar tides.

The Moon is continually stretched and relaxed as the tidal forces acting on it change. In a region already close to failure, that cyclic stress can help trigger a seismic event. The mechanism is therefore different from the long-term plate-motion loading that dominates the standard Earth earthquake model. Deep events also originate far below the brittle surface faults that future lunar crews might encounter.

Shallow moonquakes: faults from a shrinking Moon

Shallow moonquakes are the closest lunar analogue to tectonic earthquakes because they involve brittle faulting in the upper Moon. NASA’s approximate shallow-event range is 50–220 km. Some of these faults formed as the Moon cooled and contracted. The global contraction compressed the crust and produced scarps and other fault-related landforms; tidal stress can add a trigger to a fault that is already loaded.

NASA-funded work led by Thomas Watters interpreted eight recorded events as likely products of this process. Watters said: “We think it’s very likely that these eight quakes were produced by faults slipping as stress built up when the lunar crust was compressed by global contraction and tidal forces, indicating that the Apollo seismometers recorded the shrinking Moon and the Moon is still tectonically active.” The statement describes ongoing or geologically recent fault activity, not an Earth-like network of drifting plates.

Thermal moonquakes: the surface expands and contracts

The lunar surface experiences a severe temperature swing between the extremely cold lunar night and intense daytime heating. Because a lunar day-night cycle lasts roughly two Earth weeks, the near-surface material repeatedly expands and contracts over a long heating and cooling interval. That movement can crack or shift rock and generate seismic signals near the surface.

Thermal events are not driven by a plate boundary or by a deep rupture. Their timing and shallow origin make them a separate category when scientists interpret lunar seismometer records.

Meteoroid impacts: an external source of shaking

When a meteoroid strikes the Moon, the impact produces a seismic signal. Apollo instruments used those signals to study how the Moon transmits vibrations and to estimate the population of impactors striking the lunar surface. An impact is therefore a moonquake in the broad observational sense, even though its energy enters the ground from outside rather than being released by a naturally slipping lunar fault.

Why can a moonquake last for hours?

NASA summarizes the contrast directly: “Unlike an earthquake that lasts for tens of seconds to minutes, a moonquake can last for hours.” The unusually long coda is chiefly a wave-propagation effect.

The Moon is dry and lacks the water-saturated, actively reworked near-surface conditions found in many parts of Earth. Its fractured crust and regolith strongly scatter seismic energy. Instead of traveling once through a comparatively well-damped medium and quickly fading, waves can bounce and reverberate through the lunar crust and loose surface material. Weak attenuation allows the signal to continue while scattering spreads the energy over many arrivals.

A long record should not be translated into a simple strength ranking. A signal can ring for a long time because the medium dissipates energy slowly, while a shorter earthquake can release greater total energy or produce more severe local acceleration. Duration and damaging potential must be evaluated separately.

Does the Moon have tectonic plates?

No. The Moon does not have Earth’s global system of large, mobile tectonic plates sliding past one another, spreading apart or subducting. That is why “plate-boundary earthquake” is not a general explanation for lunar seismicity.

The Moon can still be tectonically active in a narrower sense. As its interior cooled, the Moon contracted, compressing the crust and creating faults and scarps. Some of those faults can slip when accumulated stress exceeds friction, with tidal forces helping to trigger movement. This is tectonic faulting without Earth-style plate tectonics.

The distinction matters when assessing a site. A location can be near a contraction-related scarp even though it is nowhere near a plate boundary, and a deep tidal event can occur far below the shallow faults that shape the surface.

How strong are moonquakes compared with earthquakes?

There is no authoritative, directly comparable maximum moonquake–earthquake magnitude pair in the evidence summarized here. It would therefore be misleading to claim that moonquakes are a specific number of times weaker than earthquakes.

Three separate measures should be kept apart:

  • Source energy: the energy released by fault slip, thermal movement or an impact.
  • Recorded magnitude: a calculated measure based on the seismic signal and the scale used.
  • Experienced shaking: the motion at a particular site, which depends on distance, depth, local material and how the waves are amplified or scattered.

The Moon’s long-lasting signals are evidence of weak attenuation and intense scattering, not proof that every event is large. Conversely, a short event on Earth can be highly destructive near a populated fault. Any numerical comparison needs the same measurement scale, source type and observation conditions; those matched figures are not established in the NASA and USGS material summarized for this topic.

What Apollo seismometers revealed

A pioneering network operated from 1969 to 1977

Apollo astronauts placed seismometers on the lunar surface. During their operating period, the instruments recorded thousands of lunar vibrations. Those records established that the Moon is not seismically silent and allowed scientists to distinguish recurring deep events, shallow fault-related events, thermal signals and impacts.

Shallow events are a smaller, especially informative subset

A reanalysis of the remaining Apollo stations identified 28 shallow moonquakes during the 1969–1977 interval. These events are particularly valuable because shallow faulting bears on the Moon’s contraction and on the possible location of future surface hazards.

The network leaves important blind spots

Apollo’s seismometers were sparse and operated on the near side. The far side has not had an equivalent long-running network, so event locations, source mechanisms and regional differences remain less certain there. The existing records constrain the Moon’s interior, but they do not provide the same spatial coverage available in heavily instrumented regions of Earth.

Why lunar seismology matters scientifically

Seismic waves act as probes of a world’s interior. Their travel paths and reverberations contain information about layers, fractures and how efficiently energy is transmitted. On the Moon, the Apollo data help researchers investigate the interior while also tracing stresses associated with cooling, global contraction and tidal deformation.

Impact signals add a second benefit: because the impact source is external and often tied to a visible event, it provides a natural experiment for studying the transmission of waves through lunar material. Thermal signals reveal how the near-surface responds to the extreme day-night cycle. Taken together, the different source classes are more informative than a single population of fault ruptures would be.

Could moonquakes threaten a lunar base?

Yes, they could be an engineering concern, but the hazard is not yet characterized with the confidence used for many terrestrial building codes. A future base would face several distinct seismic questions rather than one generic “moonquake risk.”

Shallow faulting near a site

Contraction-related faults and scarps identify places where the crust has experienced compression. A habitat or landing zone near an active or recently active fault could face ground motion, surface displacement or local slope and regolith instability. Site selection should therefore combine high-resolution geological mapping with seismic monitoring rather than relying only on a flat-looking surface.

Long-duration vibration

Hours of scattered shaking could challenge equipment differently from a short terrestrial shock. Anchored instruments, power systems, antennae, excavation supports and precision experiments may need to keep operating while the ground continues to vibrate. The design question is not simply whether a structure survives one peak acceleration; it is also whether repeated or prolonged motion disrupts alignment, seals, joints and delicate instruments.

Thermal and impact events

Near-surface thermal cracking is tied to the lunar day-night cycle, so exposed hardware must already be designed for extreme temperature changes. Meteoroid impacts add an external hazard that can occur away from a known fault and can generate seismic energy without warning. Impact protection and seismic isolation address different problems and should not be treated as substitutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is still uncertain

The Apollo network does not establish a complete event frequency, a universal maximum magnitude or a precise hazard map for every proposed landing region. Far-side coverage is especially limited. Modern, distributed seismometers would reduce those uncertainties by improving event locations, identifying local site effects and separating overlapping source types.

How scientists tell lunar events apart

Interpretation begins with the characteristics that separate the four source classes:

  • Depth: a deep source points toward tidal moonquake mechanisms, while a shallow source is more compatible with brittle faulting or near-surface thermal movement.
  • Timing: recurring relationships with changing gravitational tides support a tidal trigger; repeated heating and cooling patterns support a thermal source.
  • Waveform and duration: impacts have an external trigger, while the Moon’s fractured, highly scattering crust can produce a long coda for many event types.
  • Surface geology: scarps and contraction-related faults provide a structural context for shallow events.

No single clue is sufficient in every case. Scientists compare the signal with depth estimates, timing, surface geology and the behavior expected from each mechanism.

What readers should remember

  • Earthquakes usually begin when tectonic stress overcomes friction on a fault.
  • Moonquakes include deep tidal events, shallow contraction-related fault slips, thermal cracking and meteoroid impacts.
  • The Moon has no Earth-like plate boundaries, but it can still experience tectonic faulting as its crust contracts.
  • Lunar signals can ring for hours because dry, fractured and weakly attenuating material scatters and reverberates seismic energy.
  • A long duration is not a direct measure of greater energy or greater danger.
  • Apollo’s 1969–1977 records demonstrate active lunar seismicity while leaving major coverage gaps, particularly on the far side.
  • For future bases, the central issue is an engineering uncertainty: where events occur, how long they persist and how local ground conditions affect hardware.
