Moonfrost and Stardew Valley share farming, fishing, crafting and relationship systems, but they are aimed at different experiences. Stardew Valley is a finished, widely released country-life RPG with optional cooperative multiplayer. Moonfrost is a Windows PC single-player RPG built around rebuilding a ruined village, constructing homes and uncovering a mystery. Oxalis Games announced a Moonfrost Early Access launch for October 12, 2026, but the Steam page available during the latest research still used pre-release wording, so check the live store listing before treating its availability or price as confirmed.
The short answer
If you want a proven game you can play now on PC, console or mobile, with a large amount of completed content and cooperative play on most supported platforms, Stardew Valley is the straightforward choice. If you want a newer, explicitly single-player game focused on rebuilding a settlement, placing individual walls and furniture, exploring a magical world and following an unfinished story, Moonfrost is the closer fit—provided you are comfortable with Early Access and Windows PC requirements.

Moonfrost is influenced by Stardew Valley, but its developer presents it as a distinct world and set of systems rather than a clone. Both games combine a farming routine with relationships; their settings, construction systems, release status and multiplayer options are substantially different.

Activities beyond farming
The advertised loop extends well beyond planting crops. You can fish, cook, gather resources, explore dangerous temples, build and decorate a home, restore village streets and businesses, and develop friendships or possible romances. Story and character development are central to the design rather than being optional background flavor.
Single-player and PC focus
Moonfrost’s official FAQ states: “Moonfrost is currently designed as a single player experience.” The same FAQ says development is focused on Windows PC first, with Steam and Epic Games Store intended as platforms. It says no Mac or mobile release is currently planned. Those plans can change, so treat them as the developer’s stated target rather than a guarantee of future versions.
What Stardew Valley is
An open-ended country-life RPG
The official Stardew Valley press description calls it an “open-ended country-life RPG.” You inherit an overgrown farm, establish a new life and can help restore the town’s community center. The game supports farming, ranching, orchard growing, fishing, crafting, cooking, cave exploration, friendship, dating, marriage and family life.
Recommended Free Tools
A large established cast
The official feature list names more than 30 residents of Pelican Town and 12 dateable or marriageable characters. Relationships are woven into a long-running farm routine: you can spend time with villagers, pursue romance, marry and raise a family while continuing to expand the farm and explore.
Release history and reach
Stardew Valley first released on PC on February 26, 2016, then expanded to Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. ConcernedApe’s official press page reported more than 41 million copies sold across all platforms as of December 2024, including more than 26 million on PC and 7.9 million on Nintendo Switch. Those figures are dated totals, not a claim about sales in 2026.

Availability, platforms and Early Access status
Moonfrost’s announced launch
A developer Steam announcement dated before the latest research announced Early Access for October 12, 2026 at $14.99. It described roughly 50% of the main storyline, 11 non-player characters, relationship progression to level 3 and temple exploration through level 19. The announcement also said development would continue toward version 1.0.
The Steam page retrieved for the comparison still contained pre-release language, despite the announced date having passed. That conflict means availability and price should be checked on the live Steam listing before purchase. The safest description is “announced for Early Access on October 12, 2026,” not an unconditional statement that the game is currently released.
What the announced Moonfrost build includes
The store description available during research outlined a launch package containing the first half of the main story, 20 temple rooms, several restored businesses, 11 villagers, home building and hundreds of furniture and decoration blueprints. These are an announced Early Access scope, not a promise that every item is present in the current build or that the list will remain unchanged.
The temple figures are not necessarily contradictory: the announcement described exploration through level 19, while the store copy counted 20 temple rooms. They are two scope markers from separate developer descriptions, so a buyer should rely on the current store details for the exact map layout. Likewise, “about half” of the story communicates an incomplete campaign, not a guaranteed percentage of total play time.
Stardew Valley’s platform coverage
Stardew Valley is listed for PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 4, Switch, iOS and Android. Its official press page identifies multiplayer support on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 4 and Switch, while listing mobile, PlayStation Vita and Tesla as exceptions. Platform eligibility and cross-play behavior can depend on the current version, so consult the relevant platform’s current support information for technical details.
Buying format matters
The official Stardew Valley materials confirm a Switch version but do not establish a particular physical cartridge edition, region, retailer or current stock status. If you are shopping for a “Stardew Valley Nintendo Switch game,” verify whether a listing is digital or physical and check its region and seller. Moonfrost’s official plans describe a PC title intended for Steam and Epic Games Store; they do not describe a physical release, console edition or mobile version.
How the daily gameplay differs
Farming and resource gathering
Both games use farming as an anchor for a broader routine. In Stardew Valley, the inherited farm is the main project, with ranching, orchards, fishing, crafting and cooking filling out each day. Moonfrost also advertises crops, fishing, cooking and gathering, but those tasks support the larger goal of restoring a damaged village and learning what happened to the world.
Construction and decoration
Construction is a defining Moonfrost distinction. Its feature description specifically promotes building a home wall by wall, decorating it, and rebuilding village streets, homes and businesses. Stardew Valley lets you develop the farm and construct farm buildings, but its official feature summary emphasizes farm management, residents, caves, crafting and fishing rather than the same granular architectural system.
Moonfrost’s announced store scope also mentions hundreds of furniture and decoration blueprints. That signals a substantial customization catalog, although it does not establish how quickly blueprints are unlocked, whether every blueprint is available at launch or how the building interface works. Stardew Valley supports decorating and farm development too, but the official comparison material does not claim an equivalent wall-placement system.
Restoration as progression
Stardew Valley frames progress around turning an overgrown farm into a productive home and deciding whether to help restore the community center. Moonfrost frames progress around repairing a settlement affected by meteor storms. In Moonfrost, restoring streets and businesses is part of the central world-building objective; in Stardew Valley, town restoration is one major path within an open-ended life simulation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Relationships, romance and family
Moonfrost’s relationship system
Moonfrost advertises friendships and potential romances as part of its story and character development. The announced Early Access scope set relationship progression to level 3 for its initial content and included 11 villagers. Because the game is unfinished, the number of characters, romance availability and later relationship stages may expand as development continues.
Stardew Valley’s established social systems
Stardew Valley’s official description lists more than 30 residents and 12 dateable or marriageable characters. Its relationship path can include dating, marriage and family life. That makes it the more fully documented choice for players who specifically want a mature, long-running social simulation rather than an evolving Early Access system.
The difference is also one of certainty. Stardew Valley’s published feature list tells you the scale of its cast and the availability of marriage and family systems. Moonfrost’s materials establish friendships, possible romances and early relationship levels, but they do not promise Stardew Valley’s full household progression at launch.

Exploration, danger and combat
Moonfrost’s temples
Moonfrost places dangerous temples inside its advertised activity list. The announced Early Access plan reached temple level 19 and included 20 temple rooms in the store scope available during research. The temples connect exploration to the game’s larger mystery and rebuilding premise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStardew Valley’s caves
Stardew Valley’s official feature list highlights cave exploration alongside farming, fishing, crafting and relationships. Caves provide a different kind of expedition from Moonfrost’s temples: they are part of the established farm-and-town loop rather than a newly announced story structure. Neither game’s official descriptions alone justify a ranking of combat depth or difficulty.
What cannot be concluded yet
Feature lists do not establish enemy variety, combat controls, resource economies, difficulty settings or how much time either activity occupies. Moonfrost’s “dangerous” temples indicate risk, but not a measured difficulty level. Stardew Valley’s cave listing confirms exploration, not a direct comparison with Moonfrost’s temple progression.
Multiplayer: the clearest dividing line
Moonfrost
Moonfrost is designed as a single-player experience. The official FAQ does not describe cooperative or competitive multiplayer, and the announced PC focus means you should not buy it expecting to invite friends into your village.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley supports inviting one to three other players on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 4 and Switch, according to its official press page. Mobile, PlayStation Vita and Tesla versions are listed as exceptions. If cooperative farming is a deciding requirement, Stardew Valley is the supported option in this comparison.
“Multiplayer on Stardew Valley” is not the same as universal cross-play. The official page lists supported platforms, but platform-specific versions can have their own requirements and limitations. Check the current support page for the edition you own rather than assuming a PC player can join every console or mobile version.
Story, tone and content maturity
Two different narrative hooks
Stardew Valley starts with a personal escape from an old life: you inherit a neglected farm and make a place in Pelican Town. The community center and relationships provide structure, but the game remains open-ended.
Moonfrost starts with a world-scale disruption: a second moon and meteor storms have changed civilization. Your Frost Hunter rebuilds a village while uncovering a personal past and the cause or meaning of the celestial mystery. The premise gives restoration and narrative discovery equal billing with agriculture.
Finished game versus evolving project
Stardew Valley’s long availability and broad platform support make its content baseline easier to understand. Moonfrost’s Early Access plan is explicitly incomplete: the announced launch represented about half of the main story, with additional story and other content planned for later. Early Access can bring new features, balance changes and unfinished sections, so choose Moonfrost only if that development model suits you.

What “cozy” means here
Both games use familiar cozy-life-sim ingredients—routine work, home improvement, fishing, cooking and social relationships—but the official descriptions do not prove that one is more relaxing, better written or more engaging. Moonfrost’s meteor disaster and dangerous temples give it a stronger fantasy-adventure premise on paper; Stardew Valley’s open-ended farm and town structure give it a longer-established framework. Those are design emphases, not objective quality rankings.

- More explicit home construction and decoration, including wall-by-wall building.

Wait or verify before buying Moonfrost if
- You need a confirmed current release rather than an announced date.
- You require Mac, mobile or console support.
- You want multiplayer or a finished main story.
- You need the exact current price, because the announced $14.99 figure should be confirmed on the live store page.
- You want to know precisely which villagers, temple rooms and story chapters are in the build you will download.
What to check before you purchase
- Open the current Steam listing and confirm whether Moonfrost is available for purchase or still presented as unreleased.
- Check the displayed price and regional currency; the $14.99 amount comes from the developer’s announced Early Access launch and may not describe every market or a later change.
- Confirm that your computer runs Windows and meets the store’s current system requirements.
- Read the current Early Access description to see which story chapters, villagers, temple areas and restoration features are in that build.
- If you need cooperative play, select Stardew Valley on a platform whose current listing supports multiplayer rather than assuming every edition does.
- For a Switch purchase, confirm whether the listing is digital or physical, its region and the seller’s stock.
- Remember that Moonfrost’s planned Steam and Epic availability does not establish a Mac, mobile, console or boxed edition.
Bottom line
Moonfrost is best understood as a single-player, Windows-focused rebuilding RPG that shares Stardew Valley’s farming-and-relationships foundation while adding a stronger emphasis on architectural construction, village restoration, temples and a science-fantasy mystery. Stardew Valley remains the safer recommendation for broad platform access, cooperative play and a mature content set. Moonfrost is the more experimental choice for players who specifically want its isometric presentation, wall-by-wall building and evolving story—and who are willing to verify its live Early Access status before purchasing.
