Calculate the PC’s monthly energy first, then apply your current tariff and bill components. For 24/7 operation over 30 days, every 100 W of average AC input uses 72 kWh (units)—a calculation, not a typical-PC measurement.
Calculate the PC’s monthly electricity use
Use average AC input power in watts, not the power supply’s rated maximum:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Monthly energy (kWh or units) = average AC input watts × hours per day × days ÷ 1,000.
For continuous operation over a 30-day month, this simplifies to average watts × 0.72. For example, a system averaging 100 W uses 100 × 0.72 = 72 kWh. A 200 W average would use 144 kWh by the same arithmetic. These are examples of the formula, not measured consumption figures for a particular PC.

Use the right units
- Watts (W) describe instantaneous power draw.
- Kilowatt-hours (kWh), often called units on Indian electricity bills, describe energy used over time.
- Rupees are the resulting charge; they cannot be derived accurately from units alone without the applicable tariff and bill details.
Measure the PC while it is actually streaming
A desktop power supply’s wattage rating is its capacity, not a reading of what the computer consumes. Measure the complete PC at its AC input while it runs the same 24/7 YouTube streaming workload you plan to use. An idle reading or brief observation may miss variation; use a representative period and, if available, a meter that records accumulated kWh.
ENERGY STAR’s computer measurement procedure calls for an approved true-power meter at the AC source and connects the computer directly to the measurement outlet, without a UPS between meter and computer. That is a controlled measurement procedure; a real-world estimate should reflect your actual workload. Read the ENERGY STAR computer test method.
Include inverter losses without guessing
If you want the grid energy attributable to running the PC through an inverter, the most direct approach is to measure the inverter’s AC input while it powers the PC. Alternatively, measure the PC’s load and apply the inverter’s efficiency at that load. Schneider Electric defines UPS efficiency as output electrical power divided by input electrical power; the difference is lost as heat. Efficiency varies with load, so a nameplate maximum may not represent the operating efficiency in your setup. See Schneider Electric’s technical FAQ.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Mains power and power cuts are different cases
- When mains power is available and the inverter is passing power through, grid draw can include the inverter or charger’s standby and conversion overhead. That overhead depends on the model and mode.
- During an outage, the PC draws energy from the battery. Recharging it later also involves losses, so the energy drawn from the grid over time may exceed the PC’s own AC load.
Do not add a universal inverter-loss percentage. Measure system input directly or use the manufacturer’s efficiency information for the relevant load and operating mode.
Apply your Indian tariff and bill details
India has no single household electricity rate that applies to everyone. The Ministry of Power says retail tariffs are determined by the appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions, and state governments may subsidize charges for some consumer classes. Your state, DISCOM, consumer category and slab matter. See the Ministry of Power’s tariff information.
The Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation records different state and category schedules, including fixed charges, energy rates and subsidies. Use the latest tariff order that applies to your connection or your current bill rather than treating a national per-unit figure as universal. Read the CEA tariff compilation (March 2026).

A dated Chhattisgarh example—not a national rate
For illustration, the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s FY 2026–27 domestic schedule lists telescopic energy-charge slabs of ₹4.50/kWh for 101–200 units, ₹6.00 for 201–400 units, ₹7.00 for 401–600 units, and ₹8.80 above 600 units. It separately lists monthly fixed charges per kW and notes that state subsidies may apply. Under telescopic billing, a 150-unit use applies the first slab to the first 100 units and the next slab only to the remaining 50. These are specific to that Chhattisgarh schedule and year, not a rate for all Indian households. See the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Estimate the change to your bill
- Calculate the PC’s additional monthly units from measured average AC input, including inverter input if you measured the complete system.
- Check your latest bill or tariff order for the state, DISCOM, consumer category, slab structure and any applicable subsidy.
- Work out the household bill under that schedule before adding the PC, then recalculate it with the PC’s units. Check whether the extra use crosses a slab or changes another applicable charge.
- Include relevant fixed charges, duties or taxes, fuel or power-purchase adjustments, local charges and subsidies. The energy charge alone is not necessarily the bill increase.
The CEA compilation and tariff order establish schedules, but your bill is the practical reference for the category and adjustments actually applied to your connection.
How to get a useful measurement safely
- Choose a true-power meter suitable for measuring the complete PC’s AC input, and use it according to its instructions and the electrical ratings of your equipment and outlet.
- Record the system while the intended streaming workload is running, over a representative period. An accumulated kWh reading can help account for changing load.
- To capture inverter overhead, measure at the inverter’s AC input while the PC is powered through it. Do not insert or bypass equipment contrary to the meter or inverter manufacturer’s instructions.
- For a separate PC-load measurement, follow the ENERGY STAR method’s direct AC-source arrangement; it specifies no UPS between the meter and computer. Apply inverter efficiency only when you have information appropriate to its actual load and mode.
Delta Electronics India describes power meters as instruments for electrical power and energy parameters, but that does not establish a particular consumer plug-in meter’s price, socket compatibility or safety certification. Verify those details for any device you choose. See Delta Electronics India’s power-meter information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the PC’s PSU rating tell me how much electricity it will use?
No. It is the power supply’s rated capacity, not a measurement of the complete PC’s consumption. Measure AC input during the actual streaming workload.
