There is no single monthly cost for leaving a gaming PC running a YouTube stream in India: multiply its average wall power in watts by 0.72 to estimate the electricity it uses over 30 days in kWh, then multiply by your applicable electricity rate. For example, an assumed average draw of 65 W works out to 46.8 kWh a month. At the Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 comparison endpoints, that energy alone would cost about ₹55–₹416—but those endpoints are not a personalized bill estimate.
Calculate the monthly energy use
For a 30-day month, a continuously running setup operates for 720 hours. Use its average power at the wall, not the wattage printed on the PC’s power supply:

These are arithmetic examples using assumed power inputs, not measurements of particular computers. If you want to estimate the whole setup, include the monitor and any peripherals in the measured watts; for the tower alone, measure just the tower.
What the cost could look like—and why your bill differs
The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 report compares domestic effective rates under an assumed 1 kW sanctioned load and 100 units per month. It reports endpoints of 118 paise/kWh in Tamil Nadu and 888 paise/kWh for Maharashtra–Mumbai (TATA). Applying those rates to the 65 W illustration’s 46.8 kWh gives ₹55.22 and ₹415.58 respectively—about ₹55–₹416 for the PC energy alone.

Electricity tariffs vary by state, utility and consumption slab; subsidies, fixed charges, taxes and other bill adjustments also affect what a household pays. The Ministry of Power states: “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” The ministry also explains that state commissions determine retail tariffs and state governments may subsidize domestic consumers. If those units push household consumption into a higher slab, multiplying them by the bill’s average rate can misstate their incremental cost. The calculation above covers the energy charge only; it does not add fixed charges, taxes, subsidies or other adjustments.

Measure the PC instead of guessing its watts
A gaming PC’s power-supply rating is not its constant draw: it describes the supply’s capacity, not how much power the system uses in this workload. A continuously running stream can involve encoding, browser playback, network upload, background services, a display and peripherals. Their actual contribution depends on the setup, so a generic watt figure cannot establish your PC’s monthly cost.
The International Energy Agency’s 2009 report gives an illustrative 65 W for a PC at idle and 32 W for an idle monitor, or 97 W combined. That historical, generalized example is not a current measurement of a gaming desktop streaming YouTube. The 65 W calculation above is therefore only an illustration, not a benchmark for this use.

- Choose what you want to price. Measure the tower alone, or include the monitor and relevant accessories if you want the cost of the complete setup. Keep track of what was connected and switched on.
- Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter. Take the reading at the wall while the PC is in the intended streaming state, with the apps, display state and peripherals configured as they will be during normal operation. The meter provides an input for the calculation; it does not reduce consumption.
- Average fluctuating readings over time. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program advises measuring energy use over a period and dividing by that period when power consumption fluctuates. A brief reading may miss changes in activity.
- Convert the average watts to monthly kWh. Multiply by 720 and divide by 1,000 for a 30-day month, then multiply by the marginal rate applicable to your added units.
Can power management lower the cost?
ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance covers efficient operation in modes such as Off, Sleep and Idle, as well as power-management features. But putting a PC to sleep interrupts a stream that depends on that PC. Consider whether it truly needs to run continuously, or whether power management can apply during planned downtime. The applicable savings depend on your setup and schedule; no specific reduction can be inferred for this gaming PC without measuring it.
