Monthly Electricity Cost of Running an Old Laptop for 24/7 YouTube Streaming in India

For a 30-day month, running a laptop around the clock means 720 hours of use. Each average watt measured at the wall adds 0.72 kWh (units) to that month’s electricity use. At an illustrative average draw of 20–60 W, that is 14.4–43.2 units. The rupee cost depends on your laptop’s actual average draw and your household’s applicable electricity rate; there is no single price for all of India.

How to calculate monthly electricity use

Use the laptop’s average power draw while YouTube is playing—not the maximum wattage printed on its charger. For continuous use over 30 days:

Average wall draw (W) × 720 hours ÷ 1,000 = monthly energy (kWh, or units)

Since 1 kWh is one unit, each average watt used for 720 hours equals 0.72 kWh. The 720-hour assumption is specifically a 30-day month; a calendar month with a different number of days will have a different total.

20 W 14.4 kWh
40 W 28.8 kWh
60 W 43.2 kWh

These are arithmetic scenarios, not measurements of a particular old laptop. The 20–60 W range is illustrative, not a guaranteed range for every machine. Your laptop may use less or more depending on its components and how it is configured.

How to estimate the cost in rupees

Multiply the monthly kWh by the applicable marginal energy rate for your household. Check the rate and any adjustments or subsidy shown on your current bill or your electricity distributor’s tariff schedule. Your bill may include charges beyond the energy charge, so this calculation estimates the additional energy-charge portion, not necessarily the full change in your bill.

There is no nationwide rupee-per-unit rate that applies to every household. Retail tariffs are determined by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, and state governments may subsidize particular consumer categories. Fuel and power-purchase cost adjustments may also affect charges under applicable rules. The Ministry of Power’s explanation of state tariff-setting and subsidies is available through the Press Information Bureau.

For example, the cited guide’s Chandigarh illustration put the energy-charge portion at about ₹40–₹233 for its assumed usage range and cited tariff schedule. Treat that only as a geographically specific illustration—not a current quote, a nationwide estimate, or a full-bill total. The Central Electricity Authority publishes its Tariff and Duty of Electricity Supply in India—March 2026 compilation, and MSEDCL lists an MYT tariff order dated 25 March 2026. For your own estimate, use your current bill and the applicable schedule for your state, consumer category, and consumption slab.

Measure your laptop’s actual average draw

The most useful way to reduce uncertainty is to measure the laptop and charger together at the wall while it is playing representative YouTube content.

  1. Connect the laptop and its charger through a plug-in electricity usage meter that is compatible with your outlet and the electrical ratings involved.
  2. Run the laptop in the playback setup you want to estimate. Keep typical settings such as screen brightness, power mode, playback resolution, and sleep or display behavior in place.
  3. Record the average watts over a representative interval. A brief reading may not reflect changing playback or laptop activity.
  4. Insert that average into the 720-hour formula for a 30-day month, then multiply the resulting kWh by your applicable marginal energy rate.

A charger’s printed wattage is its maximum rating, not the laptop’s average consumption. Screen brightness, power mode, browser and playback behavior, and whether the display sleeps can all change the measured draw. No particular meter model is recommended here; check compatibility before buying or using one.

Keep the comparison fair

If you compare laptops or playback setups, compare measured average wall watts under the same conditions, calculate energy for the same number of hours, and apply the same local marginal tariff. Keep playback resolution, screen brightness, power mode, and sleep behavior as consistent as possible. A difference in state tariffs or billing slabs is not evidence that one laptop is more efficient than another.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than to keep an old laptop playing, StreamNeo is a separate option: it streams uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud. The three steps are upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
