The latest Mont Blanc height
Surveyors announced the 2026 result on 14 October after a daybreak expedition on 17 September. The reading puts the highest visible point at 4,807.47 metres above sea level. That is 1.88 metres above the 2023 published measurement of 4,805.59 metres.

The comparison is useful, but it does not describe a steady upward trend. Measurements disclosed for the intervening years were higher than the 2026 result.

Thus, the 2026 summit is about 1.3 metres lower than the 2025 reading despite remaining nearly two metres above the 2023 figure. These values are snapshots of the snow-and-ice dome, not successive measurements of a permanently rising rock peak.

What actually changes on the summit
The highest visible point of Mont Blanc is a cap of snow and ice whose thickness and shape continually respond to weather. Wind redistributes snow, precipitation adds or removes material, and temperature and sunlight alter melting, freezing and compaction. A survey taken after a snowy or windy period can therefore differ substantially from one made under other conditions.
A technical reference places the summit rock at approximately 4,792 metres, beneath a variable snow-and-ice cap described as roughly 16 to 18 metres thick. The 4,807.47-metre figure measures the top of that cap. It is not evidence that tectonic uplift raised the underlying mountain by 1.88 metres in three years.

How the 2026 expedition measured it
Surveyors, mountain guides and scientists reached the summit at daybreak and worked for more than two hours. Their equipment weighed nearly 30 kilograms. The campaign combined several techniques so the team could establish both the summit position and the shape and depth of the cover.
- Satellite positioning: High-precision satellite-positioning instruments fixed the summit’s geographic position and elevation.
- Drone mapping: A drone captured more than 1,300 images, which were processed into a three-dimensional model of the snow cap.
- Ground-penetrating radar: Radar examined the ice and the boundary with the rock below, helping distinguish the variable cap from the summit massif.
Savoie News described the 2026 effort as the 25th year of the measurement campaign. The operation involved 32 participants, 11 rope teams and approximately 2,500 metres of elevation gain.

Why the word “growth” can mislead
Calling the result “growth” is convenient shorthand for a higher measured summit, but it can imply that the entire mountain became taller. Jean des Garets, president of the Haute-Savoie chamber of surveyors, captured the physical reality by saying: The summit is in perpetual movement.
In this context, movement includes snow being blown from one side of the dome to another, fresh accumulation, settling and melt. The summit’s visible outline can change while the granite beneath it remains essentially in the same place. Long-term geological uplift occurs on a far slower scale than the weather-driven changes recorded by these annual campaigns.

How to interpret the year-to-year figures
- Use the date and conditions: A September measurement represents the cap as it existed during that expedition, not a permanent annual average.
- Separate rock from cover: The approximately 4,792-metre rock elevation and the 16–18-metre snow-and-ice cap answer different questions.
- Do not draw a straight-line trend: The 2024 and 2025 values exceeded 2026, so the series does not show uninterrupted increase.
- Compare like with like: Note whether a value was released immediately or disclosed later, and whether it refers to the highest snow point rather than the bedrock.
The 2026 campaign is best understood as a precise measurement of a changing summit surface. It documents how much snow and ice occupied the crown on 17 September, while the multi-year record shows why no single reading should be treated as Mont Blanc’s immutable height.
