If you already own the base game, look for Iceborne on its own. If you own neither, choose an edition that explicitly includes both—Capcom’s Master Edition does.
Do you need Monster Hunter: World to play Iceborne?
Yes. Iceborne expands Monster Hunter: World and requires the base game. Steam’s PC listing explicitly says that Monster Hunter: World is required to play the expansion: Steam: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.

Capcom describes Iceborne as continuing the story and adding new quest ranks, moves, locales, monsters, and gear. It is a substantial continuation of the base game, but it is still an expansion rather than a separate game that replaces it. Capcom’s announcement: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion announced.
Should you buy Iceborne or Master Edition?
| Your situation | What to look for | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| You already own Monster Hunter: World | Iceborne expansion-only edition | The Steam expansion listing requires the base game. Confirm that the selected platform and edition match the copy you own. |
| You own neither the base game nor the expansion | Master Edition or another bundle explicitly containing both | Capcom described Master Edition as including the base game and Iceborne. Check the listed contents for your platform and region before buying. |
The right choice depends on what you already own, not on which title sounds more complete. A bundle’s name alone is not enough to establish its contents for every platform or region; read the current store or package details before purchase. Capcom’s release announcement describes the Master Edition bundle: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne launches September 6.
