Master Rank is a separate tier unlocked through the Iceborne expansion, not simply another name for High Rank.
What Low Rank, High Rank, and Master Rank mean
These labels describe quest and content tiers, not the same thing as Hunter Rank. Hunter Rank is a separate progression indicator that matters for some unlocks; for example, access to the Iceborne campaign requires Hunter Rank 16 as well as completion of the base campaign.

| Tier | Where it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Low Rank | Earlier progression in the base game | Story quests and hunts that establish the core progression. |
| High Rank | Follows Low Rank in the base game | New locales and more challenging versions of familiar monsters; Capcom says they hit harder and take more damage before going down. Official Monster Hunter: World Steam announcement. |
| Master Rank | The tier associated with the Iceborne expansion | Separate from Low Rank and High Rank in Capcom’s event schedule; Master Rank event quests require Iceborne. Capcom’s event quest schedule. |
When High Rank unlocks and what changes
High Rank comes after the Low Rank portion of the base game’s story progression. The available sources establish that order, but do not provide a specific quest name or a universal Hunter Rank threshold for unlocking High Rank. Story advancement and Hunter Rank progression are linked in the beginner guide’s overview, but the two terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Game8’s beginner guide.
The shift is a progression step, not just a change in label. Capcom describes new monsters and locales, along with familiar Low Rank monsters becoming more dangerous: they hit harder and can take more damage before they go down. The sources do not give exact stat multipliers, so a percentage increase cannot be stated reliably.
#1 Best Overall
- Contains both Monster Hunter: World and the Iceborne expansion
- Explore sprawling locales teeming with undiscovered creatures and thriving ecosystems
- Battle fearsome monsters not only to craft new weapons & armor, but also to drive the story forward and uncover the mysteries of the New World and Hoarfrost Reach
- Extensive single-player campaign that also allows drop-in multiplayer; use the SOS Flare to summon other hunters for an assist!
- Use monster materials, as well as items found growing in the wild, to craft new items and gear
How to think about gear in High Rank
High Rank is also a new equipment progression phase. Rather than following a universal “best set” route, compare equipment that is available to you by its defense, useful skills for your weapon and play style, and the materials you can currently obtain. The right choice depends on the hunt and your build; no single equipment-by-equipment route is established here.
- Check defense when a new tier of armor becomes available.
- Keep skills that support your weapon and the way you play, rather than choosing solely by armor rank.
- Consider whether you can gather the materials needed to make or upgrade the equipment.
How Master Rank fits into Iceborne
Iceborne opens the Master Rank campaign and quests. Capcom Support says you must complete the base Monster Hunter: World campaign and reach Hunter Rank 16 to access the Iceborne campaign and quests. Capcom Support: How do I access the Iceborne campaign?
Rank #2
- Welcome to the new world: taking on the role of a Hunter, players are tasked with going on a research expedition to a newly discovered continent known only as “new world”.
- Living and breathing ecosystem: utilize the surrounding environment and wildlife to your advantage;Subgenre:Action role-playing game (RPG)
- Online drop-in multiplayer: when the battle is too daunting to take on single-handedly, hail up to three other hunters to assist during quests by sending up a sos flare to a worldwide server.
- Hunt to craft new Gear: defeat monsters and collect loot from fallen foes to craft equipment and weapons styled after the monsters that have been slain.
- SEAMLESS gameplay: players and monsters can move from One map area to another freely and without loading screens whilst gameplay also dynamically transitions between night and day.
That prerequisite is for accessing the expansion campaign and quests; Master Rank remains its own tier rather than an extension of the Low Rank/High Rank labels. If you are checking whether you can play it, confirm the platform and edition you own, since availability can vary and current retailer listings are not established here.
