Start with Sword & Shield if Monster Hunter Wilds is your first Monster Hunter game. It combines quick movement, rapid attacks, a usable shield and the ability to use some items while drawn, making it the most forgiving general introduction. Hammer is the best alternative for a simple head-stunning loop; Great Sword suits deliberate players who enjoy enormous committed hits; Lance is the safest defensive choice; and Light Bowgun is the most approachable ranged option. No weapon is an official universal best, so treat your first choice as an experiment rather than a permanent class selection.

The 14 weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds has 14 weapon types, according to Capcom’s 2024 weapons-and-mechanics overview. They are not merely cosmetic variations: each changes your movement, attack timing, defense, resource management and role in a hunting party. The table is a decision aid, not a power ranking.

Sword & Shield Fast and highly mobile close range Shield plus quick repositioning Learning when to attack, guard or use items Most general first test
Dual Blades Very fast close-range attacks Relies more on movement than blocking Stamina and Demon Mode Players who want a rapid, aggressive rhythm
Hammer Mobile close range Safety comes from movement and timing Charge levels and head positioning Simple goal: hit the head and stun
Hunting Horn Close-range blunt attacks Team buffs improve group utility Notes, songs and Echo Bubbles Support-minded players who accept extra setup
Lance Short-to-mid close range with steady forward pressure Strong guarding and counters Guard and counter timing Players who value survival and staying close

Insect Glaive Highly mobile, including aerial movement Mobility rather than a traditional shield Collecting Kinsect extracts for buffs Players who prioritize movement and aerial options
Light Bowgun Mobile mid-range firing Distance and movement provide safety Ammo types and Rapid Fire energy Most approachable ranged starting point
Heavy Bowgun Long-range firepower Auto-Guard can help while positioned correctly Ammo and positioning; Ignition Mode ammunition Players who prefer power from a distance
Bow Mobile mid-range attacks Movement and spacing, not a shield Charge management and critical distance Players who enjoy aiming and distance discipline

Why Sword & Shield is the safest first recommendation

Sword & Shield asks you to learn the core hunting habits without forcing one narrow rhythm. You can move quickly, attack in short bursts, raise a shield when a monster’s response surprises you and use some items while the weapon remains drawn. That combination lets a new hunter recover from imperfect decisions instead of being locked into a long animation.

The official companion weapon guide labels Sword & Shield “Beginner.” That label does not mean the weapon has no depth. Its shield strikes, positioning and attack choices still reward practice, but the basic loop is readable: approach, land a few hits, defend or move away, then re-enter. It is also a useful way to learn Wilds’ universal Focus Mode because you can aim attacks and guards in the camera’s direction without first mastering a complex gauge.

Monster Hunter Wilds Steelbook
  • Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
  • A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
  • New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
  • Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
  • Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.

Choose it when you are unsure what you enjoy, when this is your first Monster Hunter title, or when you want a weapon that can adapt as you learn. After several hunts, you will have a better basis for deciding whether you want heavier commitment, stronger guarding, a ranged plan or a resource-heavy moveset.

Five other strong starting paths

Hammer: the clearest close-range objective

Hammer is built around charged blunt attacks, mobility and repeated strikes to a monster’s head. Its immediate goal is easy to understand: stay near the head, charge, release a useful attack and look for the stun that follows sustained head pressure. You do not need to maintain a party-wide song list or swap forms to understand why an attack worked.

Hammer is a good first choice if you prefer action with a visible payoff rather than a long combo tree. The trade-off is target access. A monster’s head is often the most dangerous place to stand, so the weapon teaches you to read tells and choose safe openings. It is simpler than many weapons, but not mindless; charging at the wrong moment still leaves you exposed.

Great Sword: deliberate positioning and enormous commitment

Great Sword delivers very high-impact attacks while moving and striking slowly. It supports hit-and-run play and can guard, but its long attack commitment means a poor decision is expensive. You must watch a monster’s movement, choose where it will be, then commit to a charge or heavy slash before the opening disappears.

Pick Great Sword if the satisfaction of one correctly placed hit matters more to you than constant motion. The weapon teaches spacing, monster tells and patience. It is powerful and adaptable, but its slower movement makes it a demanding first weapon for anyone who reacts late or prefers uninterrupted combos. Start with shorter openings and only extend your commitment when you can predict the monster’s next position.

Lance: the defensive route

Lance combines quick thrusts with top-class defense and an extensive set of guard and counter tools. You can remain close to a monster rather than repeatedly disengaging, block an incoming attack and answer with a controlled counter. That makes Lance the clearest choice when your priority is surviving while learning how monsters attack.

Its lower spectacle should not be confused with low purpose. Lance rewards steady positioning and knowledge of guard timing. You still need to recognize attacks, because guarding at the wrong time can give up your turn or leave you poorly placed. Choose it if a measured, defensive rhythm sounds more appealing than evasive movement or giant single hits.

Light Bowgun: the approachable ranged option

Light Bowgun offers mobile mid-range firing and multiple ammunition types. Rapid Fire energy adds another layer to manage, but the weapon generally lets you keep moving while maintaining distance. For a player who prefers aiming and repositioning over standing toe-to-toe, it is the easiest ranged entry point in this roster.

Wild Hearts - PlayStation 5
  • Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
  • Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
  • Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
  • Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.

Ranged does not mean effortless. You must watch ammunition, choose appropriate firing opportunities and avoid drifting so far away that your attacks lose effectiveness. If you are comfortable tracking supplies and want mobility, Light Bowgun is a strong first experiment. If you want the most straightforward fundamentals with the least inventory attention, Sword & Shield remains simpler.

Bow: mobile shooting with stricter spacing

Bow is also mobile and mid-range, but it adds charged arrows, Tracers and critical-distance discipline. You are managing not only when to fire but also how long to charge and where to stand so attacks reach their intended effectiveness. That makes Bow attractive to players who enjoy aiming and maintaining a deliberate gap.

Choose Bow when the act of holding a charge, placing shots and continuously adjusting distance sounds engaging. It is less forgiving than Light Bowgun for anyone who dislikes spacing decisions, because being at the wrong distance directly undermines the weapon’s plan.

How the other eight weapons fit a beginner’s preferences

Long Sword

Long Sword has fast combinations and a Spirit Gauge that rewards successful attacks and counters. Its flow can feel elegant once timing clicks, but counter timing makes it less forgiving as a first weapon than Sword & Shield. Pick it when you specifically want to practice reading attacks and answering them with timed counters.

Dual Blades

Dual Blades create a rapid, high-hit-count rhythm through Demon Mode. The price of that speed is stamina management: your attacking state and your ability to keep moving depend on watching the stamina resource. They suit players who want relentless close-range pressure and do not mind managing a meter while fighting.

Hunting Horn

Hunting Horn combines blunt attacks with melody buffs and Echo Bubbles. Its team utility is strong, especially for hunters who enjoy helping a group, but note and song management raises the learning curve. Choose it when supporting allies is part of the appeal and you are willing to learn the weapon’s musical setup alongside normal positioning.

Gunlance

Gunlance mixes shielded melee with explosive shelling. Shell damage can feel forgiving because it is not based on the same hit placement as every melee strike, while the shield provides a defensive fallback. You still have to learn shelling choices, guarding and where to stand, so it is a better fit for someone who wants a technical defensive weapon than for someone seeking the fewest systems.

Switch Axe

Switch Axe has two distinct modes: a longer-reach axe form and faster sword strikes. Managing the gauge that links those forms is its central lesson. It is rewarding if you like changing tools during a hunt and can introduce ideas that later help with Charge Blade, but the mode flow adds more decisions than Sword & Shield or Hammer.

Charge Blade

Charge Blade uses sword mode to charge phials, then spends those resources on powerful axe attacks. Its ability to transform and store resources makes it highly versatile, but it also creates the heaviest resource and transformation learning burden in this list. Start here only if the appeal of a complex system is itself a reason to play.

Insect Glaive

Insect Glaive provides exceptional mobility and aerial movement, while Kinsect extracts provide buffs. The movement is appealing for players who dislike being grounded, but collecting extracts adds a recurring task before you can use the weapon at its best. It is a strong choice for mobility-first hunters who are comfortable maintaining an extra checklist during combat.

Heavy Bowgun

Heavy Bowgun delivers long-range firepower and has Auto-Guard plus Ignition Mode special ammunition. It can be powerful from a distance, yet its ammunition and positioning requirements make it less immediate for a first-time player than Light Bowgun. Choose it when deliberate ranged setup matters more than constant movement.

Wilds mechanics every weapon user should learn

Focus Mode

Focus Mode aims attacks and guards in the direction of the camera. This shared system is worth learning before you decide whether a weapon is “for you,” because it applies across the roster. It helps a new hunter connect what they see on screen with where the attack or guard will go, rather than relying only on character orientation.

Wounds and Focus Strikes

Repeatedly attacking a body part creates a wound. When the highlighted wound is available, a Focus Strike deals extra damage and can make the monster flinch. This gives every weapon a common learning objective: notice the highlighted opening, decide whether reaching it is safe, then use the weapon’s own movement and timing to exploit it. A weapon that feels unfamiliar may become clearer once you practice this shared loop.

The Seikret and carrying two weapons

Your Seikret can guide you, let you heal, sharpen and gather while travelling, and carry a second weapon in its sling. The official overview says hunters can bring two weapons on a hunt. That changes the cost of experimentation: you do not have to abandon your first choice to test a contrasting style. Pair a comfortable weapon such as Sword & Shield with a deliberate one such as Great Sword, or pair a melee weapon with Light Bowgun to compare close and mid-range play during the same outing.

A practical way to choose your first weapon

  1. Choose your preferred distance. Select close range if you want to read attacks beside the monster, mid-range if you prefer mobile firing, or long range if you want deliberate setup and distance.
  2. Choose your safety tool. Sword & Shield, Lance, Gunlance and Great Sword offer a shield or guard option; ranged weapons rely more on spacing; Dual Blades and Insect Glaive rely on movement; Long Sword relies on counters.
  3. Choose how much management you enjoy. The simplest loops are Sword & Shield and Hammer. Stamina, ammunition, gauges, phials, songs or extracts add a task layer to Dual Blades, ranged weapons, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Hunting Horn and Insect Glaive.
  4. Choose your preferred attack commitment. Hammer and Great Sword ask you to commit to charged attacks; Lance and Sword & Shield let you make shorter decisions; Long Sword asks for precise counter timing.
  5. Take two contrasting weapons on a hunt. Use the Seikret’s sling to carry a second option. Compare not only damage, but also whether you can remain where you want, defend when surprised and understand what the weapon is asking you to do.
  6. Keep the weapon that makes you curious. A weapon that leaves you wanting to try another hunt is a better long-term choice than one selected only because a ranking placed it highly.

Answers to the common first-choice questions

What is the easiest weapon for a complete beginner?

Sword & Shield is the strongest general answer because it combines mobility, a shield, rapid attacks and limited item use while drawn. Hammer is the easiest alternative if you want one clear objective—charge attacks and target the head—without maintaining a gauge or ammunition supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you start with Great Sword or Hammer?

Choose Hammer if you want to stay mobile and pursue repeated head strikes that can stun. Choose Great Sword if you prefer waiting for a large opening and landing one highly committed hit. Hammer asks you to manage head access; Great Sword asks you to predict timing and spacing. Neither is universally better.

Is Sword & Shield good for new players?

Yes. Its beginner label, defensive shield and flexible movement make it an effective first lesson in Wilds fundamentals. Its accessibility is a reason to start there, not evidence that experienced players must leave it behind.

Which weapon is easiest if you want to play at range?

Light Bowgun is the most approachable ranged starting point because it combines mid-range firing with mobility. Bow is a better match if you enjoy charge management, Tracers and maintaining critical distance. Heavy Bowgun suits a player who values long-range power and is willing to manage ammunition and positioning more carefully.

Which weapon is safest for a cautious player?

Lance is the clearest defensive choice because guarding and counters are central to its design. Gunlance also gives you a shield, while Sword & Shield offers a more mobile compromise. Your safety still depends on recognizing attacks and choosing sensible positions; no weapon removes the need to learn monster behavior.

Which weapon helps a team most?

Hunting Horn has the clearest team utility through melody buffs and Echo Bubbles. That benefit comes with note and song management, so select it because you enjoy supporting a group, not merely because it is useful to others.

Why tier lists should not decide your first weapon

Balance rankings describe a snapshot of a game and the preferences of the people making the list. PC Gamer’s July 25, 2025 weapon ranking reported more than 500 combined hours of hunting behind its general-play evaluation and still stated: “Ultimately, the best Monster Hunter weapon is the one you enjoy using most.” That is useful context, not a universal beginner prescription.

A ranking can help you discover weapons to test, but it cannot measure the personal factors that determine whether you learn: comfort with attack commitment, reaction timing, camera control, stamina or ammunition management, and willingness to stand at a monster’s head or remain at range. Use a tier list to create a shortlist, then make the decision from your own hunts.

Common mistakes when choosing

  • Picking only by apparent damage. A large number is irrelevant if the weapon’s commitment prevents you from finding safe openings.
  • Confusing mobility with simplicity. Dual Blades and Insect Glaive move quickly, but stamina or extract management still adds work.
  • Assuming ranged means risk-free. Light Bowgun, Bow and Heavy Bowgun all require distance, ammunition or charge decisions.
  • Ignoring the weapon’s defining task. Long Sword needs counter timing, Hunting Horn needs songs, Charge Blade needs phials and transformations, and Switch Axe needs gauge flow.
  • Treating the first choice as permanent. Wilds lets you carry two weapons on a hunt, so testing a contrasting option costs less than in earlier assumptions about choosing a single class.
  • Judging before learning Focus Mode. Aim attacks and guards with the camera, look for wounds and practice Focus Strikes before deciding that a weapon’s positioning feels wrong.

Bottom line

Begin with Sword & Shield unless you already know you want a different rhythm. Pick Hammer for a clear, mobile head-stun loop; Great Sword for patient, high-commitment strikes; Lance for guard-and-counter defense; Light Bowgun for mobile ranged play; and Bow for charged shooting and distance control. The other eight weapons are valid starting points when their defining system matches what you want to learn. Because Wilds supports two weapons on a hunt, the best first decision is not a lifetime commitment—it is the first comparison that helps you discover how you want to hunt.
