If you want the base game and its expansion, compare Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak with the Rise + Sunbreak Deluxe bundle. If you already own Rise, buy Sunbreak on its own—or its Deluxe Edition if you want the included cosmetic kit. Sunbreak is an expansion, not a standalone copy of the base game.
Which Monster Hunter Rise bundle should you buy?
Start with what you already own, then compare the itemized listing in the storefront for your platform and region. The Capcom Town listings reviewed here are digital Steam products; their contents and terms should not be assumed to apply to a different platform or region.

| Your situation | Options to compare | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You own neither game | Rise + Sunbreak or Rise + Sunbreak Deluxe | Compare the bundle price with buying the base game and expansion separately. The reviewed Deluxe bundle lists both games and both Deluxe Kits. |
| You already own Rise | Sunbreak or Sunbreak Deluxe Edition | Sunbreak requires ownership of Rise. The expansion-only Deluxe Edition includes the Sunbreak Deluxe Kit, not the base game. |
| You want the listed cosmetic extras | The relevant Deluxe variant | Check the platform listing for the exact contents of each Deluxe Kit before paying extra. |
Deluxe is an extras decision: the reviewed listings establish Deluxe Kits as additional contents, not a requirement for access to the core game or expansion. Prices and availability change, so check the live SKU and price in your own storefront rather than relying on a price from another region or platform.
Does Sunbreak include the base game?
No. Capcom says, “You must own Monster Hunter Rise in order to play this expansion.” The North America Steam listing for Sunbreak Deluxe Edition includes Sunbreak and its Deluxe Kit; it does not list the base game. If you do not own Rise, choose a bundle that explicitly includes it or purchase it separately.
#1 Best Overall
- Journey to the West - In addition to the plethora of new hunts to complete, the immersive story will task Kamura’s valiant hunters with researching the secrets behind the puzzling anomalies plaguing the distant Kingdom. This pursuit will take players on a journey across the sea to a new base of operations called Elgado Outpost, where they will investigate powerful creatures known as the Three Lords, each inspired by staples of Western horror.
- New and Returning Monsters - The game will introduce Malzeno, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the lupine Fanged Wyvern Lunagaron, the towering Garangolm, and new subspecies such as Blood Orange Bishaten. Hunters will also encounter numerous fan-favorite and returning species from previous Monster Hunter games including the voltaic Astalos.
- Combat Evolved - The “Wirebug” mechanic that allows for unparalleled freedom of movement and mobility returns! Hunters using the new facilities at Elgado Outpost will also be able to master all-new combat options and Wirebug techniques for all weapon types. More information on these new abilities will be shared in the future.
- New Locales - Featuring all-new maps with no loading times such as the newly revealed Citadel locale, the continuous gameplay ensures that players will remain on their quests as soon as the hunt begins, without transitions between areas.
- Hunting Options - Play solo, or join up to three other hunters in online co-op play on Nintendo Switch or PC. The Nintendo Switch system also allows for hunting anywhere, anytime and with anyone via a local connection!
What is in the Sunbreak Deluxe Edition?
The reviewed Sunbreak Deluxe Edition Steam listing names two items: Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and the Sunbreak Deluxe Kit. The reviewed Rise + Sunbreak Deluxe Steam bundle names four: Monster Hunter Rise, the Rise Deluxe Kit, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, and the Sunbreak Deluxe Kit. Confirm each kit’s itemized contents on your platform before purchase; the bundle name alone does not tell you which extras are included.
When does Sunbreak content become accessible?
Buying the expansion does not make its content available immediately in a new save. Capcom’s product listing says Sunbreak content is accessible after completing the 7-star Hub quest “Serpent Goddess of Thunder.” This is a game-progression requirement, not a prerequisite to purchasing the expansion.

What does Sunbreak add?
Capcom describes Sunbreak as adding new monsters, new locales, and new abilities for all 14 weapon types. The expansion’s added content is for players who own Rise; it is not a separate base-game purchase.
