Monitor Home Electricity Use in 2026: Start With Your Meter, Then Fill the Gaps

Start with your electricity supplier’s smart-meter display, app, or online account: it may already show whole-home electricity use. If it does not provide the timing or detail you need, choose a compatible whole-home monitor; use a plug-in monitor separately when you want to investigate one appliance. The right option depends on your meter, utility, tariff, and whether you have solar or other equipment.

Check what your electricity supplier already provides

First ask your supplier whether your meter is smart and communicating, what readings you can access, and how often they update. Check the in-home display (IHD), supplier app, and online account: depending on the system, these may show current or near-current consumption, cost estimates, historical periods, or tariff information.

In Great Britain, government guidance says smart meters record energy use in half-hour periods. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says households should be able to monitor consumption and spend through an IHD, accessible IHD, mobile app, linked device, or a combination. Its guidance also says consumers control access to smart-meter data except for regulated purposes such as billing. See how smart meters work and Smart meters: Your rights and expectations.

These are Great Britain-specific examples, not a promise that every supplier or country provides the same features. In Australia, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water explains that displays use data transmitted from the smart meter; on time-of-use tariffs, they can help identify price periods for high-load appliances. Getting a smart meter does not, by itself, change how a customer is billed. See Smart homes.

Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.

Choose a monitor based on what you need to measure

Whole-home monitors track the household supply or retrieve data from a compatible utility meter. Appliance monitors measure only the device connected through them. A plug-in monitor will not measure hardwired equipment or replace a whole-home monitor.

Method What it measures What to check
Supplier display, app, or portal Whole-home use shown by the utility’s system Available history, update frequency, tariff and cost features, and display accessibility
Utility-compatible meter monitor Whole-home use from supported smart-meter data Eligible utility account, meter radio or protocol, service area, connection, and supported-device list
Panel or meter sensor Whole-home use measured at the supply Installation requirements, data display, and whether solar import and export are distinguished
Plug-in energy monitor or monitoring smart plug One connected appliance Electrical rating, intended use, and whether the appliance can safely connect through it

Some third-party monitors read smart-meter data; others use a sensor at the electrical panel or meter. A utility-connected device may require a specific meter, an active account, an eligible service, and a reliable connection. Check your own provider’s compatibility list before buying; support in one utility’s service area does not establish compatibility elsewhere.

A regional compatibility example: PG&E

In PG&E’s California service territory, its Stream My Data program requires an active account, an eligible rate, an eligible customer category, and an eligible electric SmartMeter with a strong connection. PG&E says device data may be delayed by 15–60 seconds, depending on the device and meter. These program conditions do not apply universally. Details are on PG&E’s SmartMeter and Stream My Data page.

Use an appliance monitor to investigate one device

A plug-in electricity monitor or monitoring smart plug can show consumption for a connected appliance; some smart plugs can also control it. Confirm the product’s electrical rating and intended use, and do not use one with equipment it is not designed to handle. This method cannot measure a whole home or, by itself, hardwired loads. PG&E describes smart plugs as individual-appliance monitoring and control tools on its SmartMeter page.

If supplier data is unavailable, a standalone whole-home monitor may be another option. A 2023 Centre for Sustainable Energy leaflet describes a sensor clipped around the electricity meter’s power cable, paired with a visual display. For solar homes, it advises checking whether the clamp distinguishes incoming electricity from outgoing flow. The leaflet’s £30–£40 price is a 2023 figure, not a current price guide. Set up readings so they can help with costs

Power and energy are different quantities: kW describes the rate at which electricity is being used, while kWh measures energy consumed and is a common billing unit. A live kW reading can help identify a large load at that moment; kWh over a period is more useful for comparing consumption over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a monitor estimates cost, enter the correct unit rate and configure time-of-use periods where supported. Compare its estimate with the bill carefully: standing charges, taxes, credits, and prior balances may affect the final amount. PG&E notes that its estimated costs-to-date may differ from a bill when credits or prior balances are excluded. A displayed cost is an estimate, not necessarily the amount owed.

Keep the display powered and connected, and place it somewhere household members can see if that makes readings more useful. If data stops updating, check the monitor’s power and connection, its location relative to the meter, and the supplier or manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions. Supplier switching may also affect a display, as noted in the Centre for Sustainable Energy leaflet. Do not open a meter or electrical panel unless the product instructions and a qualified professional make that work appropriate.

Find what is driving usage with a simple baseline

  1. Record a quiet-period reading. Check use overnight or when the household is away to establish a baseline. Leave essential equipment running.
  2. Note the change when you switch something off. Turn off nonessential devices and compare the aggregate reading; this can reveal loads that run continuously.
  3. Test appliances one at a time. Switch a device on and compare the reading before and after. For plug-in equipment, an appliance monitor can isolate that device’s use.
  4. Consider both power and run time. A high-power appliance used briefly may contribute differently from a lower-power device running for hours. Compare energy over a relevant period, not only a single live reading.

For solar, batteries, EV charging, or time-of-use tariffs, look for readings that match the question you want to answer: imported electricity, exported generation, storage flows, or price periods. Australia’s government describes home energy management systems that can monitor generation, storage, and consumption and may shift high-use equipment away from peak periods. Those capabilities do not guarantee bill savings.

Check these details before settling on a method

  • Coverage: Decide whether you need whole-home use, a circuit, or one plug-connected appliance.
  • Compatibility: Confirm support for your utility, meter, electrical system, and network before relying on a third-party device.
  • Timing and history: Check how often readings update and whether the system retains useful historical data.
  • Cost estimates: Confirm whether it supports your tariff and time-of-use periods, and account for bill items the estimate may omit.
  • Solar and distributed energy: Verify that the monitor distinguishes imported electricity from exported generation if that matters to your household.
  • Usability: Consider display visibility, accessible formats, app availability, notifications, and any required phone or smart-home ecosystem.
