Monitor arm vs. monitor stand at a glance
| Factor | Monitor arm | Monitor stand or riser |
|---|---|---|
| How it attaches | Suspends the display from connected sections using a VESA interface, desk clamp or grommet. | Rests on the desktop on a base and pedestal. A VESA stand still needs matching mounting holes. |
| Position changes | Usually provides reach, height, tilt, swivel and sometimes rotation; verify the exact model. | Basic stands may have limited movement. Professional-grade stands can also lift, turn and tilt. |
| Desk clearance | Frees the area directly beneath the display, although the clamp or grommet occupies a mounting point. | The base uses desktop area. A riser can create storage space underneath. |
| Installation | Requires compatibility checks, secure mounting and correct tension adjustment. | Generally quicker to place and remove; no desk clamp is needed for a conventional stand. |
| Relocation | Less convenient once clamped or grommet-mounted. | Easy to move between desks or work areas. |
| Best cue | You regularly change posture or screen position, want a clear work surface, or plan multiple displays. | The current position works, simplicity matters, or the desk or monitor cannot accept an arm. |
These are functional differences, not promises of higher productivity or fewer injuries. No reliable named head-to-head study establishes that arms outperform stands on health or output.
What an arm actually changes
Movement beyond a fixed base
An arm uses joints or linked sections to move the screen toward or away from you, raise or lower it, swivel it left or right, tilt it and, on models with rotation, switch between landscape and portrait. The useful feature is not movement for its own sake: it lets you put the screen at a different distance or angle when your task, chair position or posture changes.

With straightforward instructions, you can set up your monitor arm effortlessly, making it a hassle-free addition to your desk. We only recommend installing it on a wooden desk, preferably with no crossbeam blocking the underside.
Ergotron describes an arm as extending and retracting so the display can maintain a practical focal distance as you move. Actual travel, lift range, swivel limits and rotation depend on the model. A “full-motion” label is not a substitute for checking those specifications.
Clearance under the screen
Because the display is suspended, you can place a notebook, audio interface, documents or a laptop beneath it. This can make a small desk feel larger and leaves fewer objects around the monitor base. The desk is not completely free: a clamp needs a suitable edge and a grommet mount needs a hole and access to its underside.
When movement is worth the installation
- You alternate between sitting and standing and need to raise the screen each time.
- You share a display between keyboard work, a side chair and another viewing position.
- You switch a monitor between landscape and portrait for different applications.
- You need to pull the screen forward for detailed work and push it back for writing or meetings.
- You are building a multi-monitor arrangement and need independent alignment.
What a stand or riser does well
Simple placement
A conventional stand arrives as a base and pedestal that sit on the desk. You avoid clamp measurements, grommet drilling and arm-tension adjustments. That simplicity is useful in rented spaces, hot-desking areas and desks with a fragile or unusually shaped edge.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Easy relocation
To move a stand, disconnect the display and carry the base with it. An installed arm is tied to a particular desk edge or grommet, so relocation normally means loosening hardware and repeating the installation. If you regularly move between work areas, this difference can outweigh an arm’s extra range.
Height without reach
A riser raises a screen and may provide usable storage below it, but it does not normally bring the display closer or farther away. A height-adjustable stand can offer more movement, while a basic pedestal may allow only limited tilt. Check the mechanism rather than assuming every stand behaves the same way.
Ergonomics: position is the deciding factor
Ergotron states that professional-grade arms and stands can both lift, turn and tilt a screen. Fellowes’ setup guidance focuses on height, distance and tilt rather than on the product category. In other words, an inexpensive stand in the right position can be more suitable than a poorly adjusted arm.

Use the following as setup guidance, not a medical prescription:
- Start with the top of the display around eye level, then refine for the screen’s size, text scale and your comfortable viewing posture.
- Begin at roughly arm’s length and move the screen until text is readable without leaning forward. Larger displays may need more distance.
- Tilt the panel to reduce reflections and glare from windows or lights.
- After switching between sitting and standing, readjust height, distance and tilt instead of accepting the previous position.
- Keep the screen stable. A display that drifts, vibrates or tips is not correctly adjusted, regardless of its theoretical range.
Neither an arm nor a stand prevents or cures neck, back, eye or repetitive-strain conditions. Persistent discomfort warrants an assessment by a qualified health professional.
Compatibility checks before buying an arm
1. Identify the monitor’s mounting interface
Look in the display’s specifications or manual for a VESA pattern. Fellowes lists 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm patterns for its arms; those dimensions are common examples, not a universal guarantee. The monitor must have threaded mounting points that match the arm’s plate and screw size.
If the display has no standard VESA holes, you may need a monitor-specific adapter. Fellowes cites an iMac as an example, but an adapter for one model or generation should not be assumed to fit another. Confirm the exact display model and adapter instructions.
2. Weigh the complete display
Compare the monitor’s actual weight with the arm’s published capacity and minimum load. Include relevant accessories that remain attached, such as a heavy webcam, speaker bar or VESA adapter. An arm rated only for heavier displays may not hold a very light one correctly, while exceeding the maximum can cause sagging or failure.

- Installed In 3 Minutes: The 1-piece design monitor arm simplifies the installation, so all necessary hardware is included; The setup can be completed in 3 minutes. Step 1: Affix the bracket to your table; Step 2: Attach your monitor to the VESA plate; Step 3: Adjust tension according to your monitor weight.
- Two mounting options : You may choose to use either a C-clamp or grommet mount. For best results, make sure your table meets the following criteria: wood tabletop is recommended; the underside of the tabletop should ideally be free of any beams or panels that may interfere with the installation; the tabletop thickness and grommet mounting can support 0.59"-3.54”.
3. Measure the desk and inspect its structure
Record the desktop thickness at the proposed mounting point. Check whether the edge is solid and stable enough for a clamp, whether the underside is accessible, and whether a rear wall, cable tray or raised lip will block the hardware. For a grommet, verify the hole diameter, location and clearance below it.
Follow the arm’s instructions for reinforcement and tightening. A thin, damaged or flexible surface can shift under load even when the arm itself is within its rated capacity.
4. Plan the arm’s reach and cable path
Measure the distance from the mounting point to the position where you want the screen. Account for the arm’s minimum and maximum extension, the monitor’s depth and the clearance needed to swivel. Leave slack in video and power cables so movement does not pull connectors or ports.

Diagonal size alone does not tell you whether a multi-monitor arm will fit. Fellowes recommends considering overall bezel-to-bezel width, each screen’s weight, the number of displays and the shape of the work surface.
- Measure the combined physical width of the panels, including bezels, and compare it with the arm’s stated span.
- Add the weights of the displays and compare each attachment’s capacity; a central pole’s total limit may differ from the limit per arm.
- Check whether the intended arrangement is side-by-side, stacked, or angled. A corner desk may require different reach on each side.
- Verify that both VESA patterns and screw depths match. One unusual monitor can determine the adapter or arm you need.
- Confirm that the desk can resist the combined load at the chosen clamp or grommet position.
Two large panels can collide at their bezels or push the outer screen beyond the desk edge even when their diagonal measurements appear compatible.
How to install and adjust a monitor arm safely
Hardware varies, so use the supplied manual for screw lengths and torque. The following sequence captures the decisions that prevent most installation problems:
Rank #4
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Clear and inspect the mounting area. Remove the monitor and accessories. Check the desk edge or grommet for damage, measure thickness and make sure the clamp jaws or grommet plate can sit flat.
- Choose clamp or grommet mounting. Use only a location the desk and arm instructions permit. Do not clamp over a hollow, rounded or unstable edge unless the manufacturer supplies an approved reinforcement.
- Secure the base before adding the display. Tighten the hardware evenly and test for movement. The base should not rock, slide or lift when you apply moderate hand pressure.
- Attach the VESA plate. Use the supplied screws or the exact size specified for the monitor. Screws that are too long can damage the display; screws that are too short may pull out.
- Mount the monitor with assistance when needed. Large or heavy panels can twist the arm during attachment. Keep the display supported until every locking feature is engaged.
- Set tension for the real load. Adjust lift and tilt tension gradually so the screen stays where you leave it without drifting. A slider or spring mechanism may have separate settings for different weights.
- Route cables with movement in mind. Use cable channels or clips, leaving a gentle loop at every joint. Move the arm through its full intended range and check that no cable catches.
- Perform a final stability test. Swivel, tilt and extend the display slowly. Stop if the base shifts, the arm sags, the desk flexes or the monitor contacts another object.
Setting up a stand or riser correctly
- Verify the base is rated for the display. Check the stand’s load limit and the monitor’s attachment method. A VESA stand still requires matching holes and hardware.
- Place it on a level, solid surface. Keep the entire base supported; do not balance it across a desk edge or on a soft pad that can compress.
- Center the load. Ensure the display’s feet or mounting plate are fully engaged and that the screen does not overhang beyond the stability limits in the instructions.
- Set height and tilt. Raise the screen with the stand or a stable riser, then adjust tilt to control glare. Add only manufacturer-approved spacers or accessories.
- Check clearance underneath. If the riser creates storage space, keep heavy items low and avoid blocking vents or cables.
Which option fits common workspace situations?
Fixed single-monitor home office
If the supplied stand already places the screen at a comfortable height and you rarely move it, keep the stand. An arm adds installation work without solving a problem. Choose a riser or height-adjustable stand if the only issue is elevation.

Small desk with papers or a laptop underneath
An arm is useful when reclaiming the area below the display is the priority. Confirm that the clamp will not consume the exact rear space needed for a laptop dock, cable tray or wall clearance.
Sit-stand desk
An arm can make frequent height changes easier, provided its reach and cable slack cover the full sitting and standing positions. A stand can work on a height-adjustable desk too, but you may need to move or readjust it manually each time.
Two-monitor productivity setup
Consider an arm only after measuring total width, weights, bezel alignment and desk shape. A dual stand or pole may be simpler if both screens remain in one fixed arrangement; independent arms help when each panel needs different height, angle or orientation.
Rental, hot desk or shared workspace
A desktop stand is usually the practical choice because it leaves no clamp marks and can travel with the monitor. An arm makes sense only when the desk is assigned to you and permits a secure, reversible mount.

Monitor with no VESA holes
Stay with the original stand unless a confirmed, monitor-specific adapter supports the exact model and weight. Do not force a universal plate onto an incompatible housing.

Common failure modes and fixes
The arm slowly sinks
The load may be below or above the mechanism’s supported range, or the tension is set incorrectly. Recheck the monitor-plus-accessories weight, confirm the arm’s minimum and maximum limits, then adjust tension in small increments. Continued sagging means the configuration is unsuitable.
The desk flexes or the clamp slips
Stop using the mount. Inspect thickness, edge condition and underside clearance, then reinstall only as the instructions allow. A reinforcement plate or a different mounting location may be required; do not compensate for an unsuitable desk by simply overtightening.
The screen will not stay level
Check that the VESA plate is centered and fully fastened, then level the arm joints and adjust tilt tension. Uneven weight from an attached accessory can also pull the panel off-axis.
Cables pull tight during movement
Power down if necessary, create additional slack and reroute through the arm’s channels. Move the display through its full range before returning it to service. Replace cables that have been sharply bent or strained.
Two monitors collide
Measure bezel-to-bezel width and change the arm height, depth or angle within its limits. If the panels still cannot clear one another, the arrangement exceeds the arm or desk geometry; a wider mount or different layout is required.
The stand wobbles
Confirm that every base or pedestal connection is locked, that the desk is level and that the monitor is centered. If wobble remains, the surface or stand may be overloaded or incompatible.
A practical decision checklist
- Need reach, swivel, portrait rotation or frequent height changes? Favor an arm after compatibility checks.
- Need open space beneath the screen? Favor an arm, while reserving room for its clamp or grommet.
- Does the existing position already work? Keep the stand; add a riser if height is the only deficiency.
- Will the setup move between desks? Favor a desktop stand.
- Is the desk thin, hollow, damaged or inaccessible underneath? Avoid a clamp or grommet unless the manufacturer explicitly approves the installation.
- Is the monitor non-VESA? Use the original stand or verify an exact-model adapter.
- Are multiple monitors involved? Measure physical width, weight, arrangement and desk shape—not just diagonal size.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer guidance from Ergotron, Fellowes and ATDEC consistently describes arms as more adjustable and stands as simpler to install or relocate. It also emphasizes matching monitor interfaces, load limits and desk construction. Those sources provide product functions and setup recommendations, not controlled proof that one category improves productivity or prevents injury.
