The fastest way to start MongoDB is to choose one of three routes: use MongoDB’s five-minute browser tutorial with no installation, create a hosted MongoDB Atlas deployment, or install MongoDB Community Edition on your own computer. Once connected, learn the document model and practice create, read, update and delete (CRUD) operations in one small database.

Choose your MongoDB setup

These options teach the same database concepts but place the software in different locations. Pick the route that matches your immediate goal rather than installing everything at once.

Route What you do Best for Trade-off
Browser tutorial Open MongoDB’s five-minute interactive lesson and connect to an Atlas cluster First-time learners who want to try commands immediately Designed for guided practice, not for running your own application
MongoDB Atlas Create a cloud deployment and connect with MongoDB Shell Learning with a hosted database or connecting an application without managing a server Cloud configuration, network access and account settings still need attention
Community Edition locally Install MongoDB Community Server, then use Shell or Compass Local development, offline work and self-managed experimentation You maintain the local service and must follow operating-system-specific installation steps

MongoDB’s official getting-started material presents Atlas as the hosted route and Community Edition as the self-managed route. It also points beginners to MongoDB Shell for command-line work and Compass for visual exploration and query building. Cloud plan prices, limits and regional availability change, so check the current Atlas page before committing to a deployment.

Start with no installation

The Database Manual includes a five-minute, in-browser interactive tutorial. It connects you to an Atlas cluster and walks through inserting, querying and deleting data. No software installation is required, making this the lowest-friction first step.

Use Atlas for a hosted database

The Atlas getting-started flow guides you through creating a cloud deployment and connecting with MongoDB Shell. The Atlas CLI’s sample setup creates an M0 shared-tier cluster in its default flow. Treat that as a tutorial path, not a promise that every feature or usage level is free. The current documentation also distinguishes command families: atlas deployments commands are deprecated as of Atlas CLI 1.52.0; use atlas clusters for cloud clusters and atlas local for local deployments where those commands apply.

Install Community Edition locally

Download MongoDB Community Server using the instructions for your operating system. After installation, choose MongoDB Shell (mongosh) for repeatable command-line practice or Compass when you want a graphical view of databases, collections and documents. Do not copy installation commands from an old tutorial: package names, service-management steps and supported releases vary by operating system.

Understand MongoDB’s document model

MongoDB stores records as BSON documents, which look like JSON objects while supporting additional data types. Documents live in collections, and collections live in databases. A document can contain nested objects and arrays, so related data can often be represented together instead of split across multiple tables.

  • Database: a logical namespace such as learning.
  • Collection: a group of related documents such as tasks.
  • Document: one record, for example a task with a title and completion state.
  • Field: a key-value pair such as status: "open".
  • _id: MongoDB’s identifier field. If you omit it when inserting, MongoDB generates one.

MongoDB University’s introductory learning path covers the document model, creating and finding documents, querying and CRUD. Its Atlas Essentials course extends that foundation with connecting, indexing and data modeling.

Your first CRUD session

The commands below work in mongosh after you connect to either an Atlas cluster or a local MongoDB server. In the browser tutorial, enter the equivalent operations in the lesson’s command area.

  1. Connect. Start mongosh and use the connection string supplied by Atlas, or connect to your local server with mongosh.
  2. Select a database. Run use learning. MongoDB creates the database when you first store data in it.
  3. Insert documents. Create a collection implicitly with an insert:
    db.tasks.insertMany([
    { title: "Read the MongoDB manual", status: "open", tags: ["study", "mongodb"] },
    { title: "Build a first query", status: "done", tags: ["practice"] }
    ])
  4. Read everything. Run db.tasks.find(). For readable output in Shell, append .pretty() where supported.
  5. Filter results. Find open tasks with db.tasks.find({ status: "open" }). Find documents containing a tag with db.tasks.find({ tags: "mongodb" }).
  6. Update one document. Change a task with db.tasks.updateOne({ title: "Build a first query" }, { $set: { status: "review" } }). The filter identifies the document; $set changes only the named field.
  7. Update many documents. Add a field to every open task with db.tasks.updateMany({ status: "open" }, { $set: { priority: "normal" } }).
  8. Delete carefully. Remove one matching document with db.tasks.deleteOne({ title: "Build a first query" }). Use deleteMany only when you have deliberately checked the filter.

Inspect the result of each write. MongoDB reports matched, modified or deleted counts; those values help catch a filter that matched nothing or more documents than intended.

Queries you should learn next

Comparison and logical operators

Use operators when equality is not enough: { priority: { $in: ["high", "urgent"] } } matches either value, while { status: { $ne: "done" } } excludes completed records. Combine conditions with $and or $or; a comma-separated object is an implicit AND.

Projection and sorting

Return only selected fields with db.tasks.find({}, { title: 1, status: 1, _id: 0 }). Sort and limit results for a manageable view: db.tasks.find().sort({ title: 1 }).limit(10).

Aggregation

Aggregation pipelines transform documents through stages such as $match, $group and $sort. Learn basic CRUD first, then use the manual’s aggregation examples for reporting and multi-step transformations.

Atlas connection checklist

  • Create an Atlas account and a deployment in the current Atlas interface.
  • Configure the permitted network access entries for the computer or application that will connect.
  • Create a database user and save its password securely; do not commit credentials to source control.
  • Copy the connection string, replace its placeholders, and pass it to mongosh or your driver.
  • After connecting, run db.runCommand({ ping: 1 }) to verify that the server responds.

Atlas is a separate choice from installing Community Edition. A local server does not automatically become an Atlas deployment, and an Atlas user or network rule does not configure your local machine.

Common problems and fixes

“mongosh” is not recognized

The Shell executable is missing or is not on your PATH. Install MongoDB Shell separately if your Community Edition package did not include it, then open a new terminal so the updated PATH is loaded.

Connection refused on a local address

The local MongoDB service may not be running, or it may be listening on a different port. Start the service using your operating system’s documented service command and verify the host and port in the connection string.

Atlas authentication failure

Check the database username and password, URL-encode special characters in the password, and confirm that you are using a database user rather than your Atlas account email. Reset the database user password if necessary.

Atlas reports that your IP is not allowed

Add the current client address in Atlas network access settings, or use the organization’s approved private-network configuration. Avoid opening access broadly just to make a tutorial work.

A query returns no documents

Confirm the selected database with db, inspect a sample using db.tasks.findOne(), and check field names and value types. "7" and 7 are different values.

An update changed nothing

Read the filter first with find(). A zero matched count means the filter did not identify a document; a matched but zero modified count can mean the requested value was already present.

Indexes, modeling and security after the first lesson

Small exercises do not need elaborate tuning. As data grows, indexes can speed repeated filters and sorts, but every index consumes storage and adds write overhead. Model documents around the queries your application actually performs; embed tightly related data when that keeps reads simple, and reference separate documents when relationships or growth make embedding unwieldy.

Before production, study authentication, authorization, network controls, backups, encryption, monitoring and update procedures. The official manual links to dedicated sections on CRUD, aggregation, SQL-to-MongoDB translation, indexes and security. Completing the setup steps alone does not make a deployment production-ready.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to create images of MongoDB documentation, dashboards or query results rather than configure a browser automation stack, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all parameters. A minimal cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.mongodb.com/docs/ -o shot.webp

The same request in Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.mongodb.com/docs/"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.mongodb.com/docs/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Its parameter names also support the names used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Where to go after CRUD

  • Complete MongoDB University’s free introductory path for structured practice.
  • Take Atlas Essentials to learn connection management, indexing and data modeling.
  • Build a small application with one collection, then add validation and indexes only when your access patterns justify them.
  • Use the official manual’s query, aggregation, SQL-to-MongoDB, index and security sections as your next references.

Frequently Asked Questions
