Short answer: MOND is usually the more economical description of disk-galaxy rotation. It connects the observed gravitational acceleration to the measured distribution of stars and gas with one characteristic low-acceleration scale. Dark-matter halo models have more freedom, but they reproduce the same galaxy-scale regularities while also providing the unseen matter used in models of gravitational lensing, galaxy clusters, the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. Therefore the fairest verdict is conditional: MOND often gives the cleaner phenomenology for rotation curves, whereas dark matter remains the more complete framework across astrophysics and cosmology.
What a galaxy rotation curve actually measures
A rotation curve is a plot of orbital speed against distance from a galaxy’s center. For a nearly circular orbit, the speed at each radius reflects the total gravitational acceleration there. Astronomers first measure the speeds of stars or gas from Doppler shifts, then compare those speeds with the gravity expected from the material they can see.

If most of a galaxy’s mass were concentrated in its bright central regions, orbital speeds should decline outside the optical disk, approximately as the planets’ speeds decline with distance from the Sun. Instead, many spiral galaxies show nearly flat curves: speeds remain high far beyond the radius containing most of the starlight. In Newtonian gravity, visible stars and gas alone then under-predict the required acceleration. This is the mass-discrepancy problem. A rotation curve establishes that discrepancy; it does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is unseen matter or a modified law of gravity.
How MOND turns the discrepancy into a prediction
The basic acceleration scale
MOND (Modified Newtonian Dynamics) changes the gravitational or inertial law when acceleration becomes very small. A common formulation uses an interpolation function that connects Newtonian behavior at high acceleration to a deep-MOND regime below a characteristic scale, historically fitted near a0 ≈ 1.2 × 10−10 m s−2. The exact interpolation function is a model choice, but the acceleration scale is the key physical parameter.

Let gN be the acceleration calculated from the observed baryons (stars plus gas), and g the acceleration inferred from the measured rotation speed. In the deep-MOND limit, the relation is approximately g2 ≈ a0gN, or g ≈ √(a0gN). Because the prediction is tied directly to the measured baryonic distribution, changing the surface-density profile changes the predicted curve in a specific way rather than merely changing an arbitrary halo.
Why flat outer curves follow
For a galaxy whose visible mass has mostly accumulated inside radius r, Newtonian acceleration falls roughly as gN ∝ 1/r2. Deep MOND then gives g ∝ 1/r. Since circular speed obeys v2/r = g, the speed approaches an approximately constant value at large radius. MOND therefore produces a flat outer curve without adding a dark halo.
The baryonic Tully–Fisher relation
The same limit predicts a relation between total baryonic mass and the fourth power of the asymptotic speed, commonly called the baryonic Tully–Fisher relation. Galaxies with more stars and gas should rotate faster in a quantitatively linked way. This is not an extra fit made after seeing each curve; it follows from the low-acceleration scaling once the baryonic mass is specified.

An extended halo raises the outer speed
The standard alternative keeps Newtonian gravity and adds a large, non-luminous halo around each galaxy. The halo contributes gravitational acceleration at radii where the visible disk contributes little, so the predicted speed stays high instead of declining. The halo’s density profile, scale radius, concentration, shape and response to galaxy formation determine the detailed curve.
A halo fit normally includes the stellar mass-to-light ratio, gas distribution and sometimes the galaxy’s distance and inclination as additional parameters. That flexibility can fit a wide variety of inner shapes, but it also means a rotation curve is not a single, parameter-free dark-matter prediction. Halo properties depend on how dark matter formed structure and how baryonic feedback altered the central regions.

One idea, several dark-matter models
“Dark matter” is a family of particle and halo models rather than one fixed curve. Collisionless cold dark matter provides the baseline cosmological picture. Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) allows dark particles to scatter, transferring heat within a halo and changing its central density. A 2019 Physical Review X analysis of 135 SPARC galaxies found that an SIDM framework could reproduce both the diversity of observed rotation curves and their organizing relation, with halo concentrations consistent with expectations based on Planck cosmological parameters and stellar mass-to-light ratios near 0.5 solar units.
What the SPARC rotation-curve data show
SPARC (Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves) is a central data set because it combines resolved rotation curves with infrared measurements of stellar mass and detailed gas maps. It allows the same galaxies to be tested against MOND and halo models while exposing the assumptions that dominate the result.
| Question | What the analyses report | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| How tightly does MOND track the observed acceleration? | A 2019 MOND analysis used 2,692 acceleration points in 153 galaxies. Adding a dark-baryon component slightly improved fits; about 60% of galaxies fitted with those models had χ2 below 3.0. | MOND gives a compact description of a large sample, but fit quality depends on the adopted stellar populations, distances, inclinations and gas masses. |
| Are extra dark baryons required in that analysis? | The same work found insignificant evidence for them: the scale factor was consistent with c = 1 for 53% of all galaxies. |
Many systems did not require an additional unseen baryonic component beyond the fitted MOND relation. |
| Can a halo model reproduce the same organizing relation? | The 2019 SIDM study of 135 SPARC galaxies reproduced both rotation-curve diversity and the radial-acceleration relation, with cosmologically plausible halo concentrations. | A tight relation is not exclusive proof of MOND; a dark-matter model can generate it through halo–galaxy correlations. |
These percentages are sample- and model-specific, not universal scores for every MOND or dark-matter formulation. A lower χ2 can reflect a better physical model, but it can also reflect how uncertainties and nuisance parameters were assigned.
The radial-acceleration relation: MOND’s strongest galaxy-scale success
The radial-acceleration relation (RAR) plots the acceleration inferred from a galaxy’s rotation curve against the acceleration calculated from its observed baryons. High-acceleration points lie close to the Newtonian one-to-one line; low-acceleration points show a systematic excess over the baryonic Newtonian prediction. The transition occurs near the same characteristic scale that appears in MOND fits.
This regularity is striking because it links local acceleration, rather than simply total galaxy mass, to the visible matter distribution across many systems. It explains why low-surface-brightness galaxies, which are dominated by low accelerations, display large apparent discrepancies, while dense inner regions can look nearly Newtonian.

What the RAR does and does not prove
- It strongly establishes an empirical connection between baryons and measured acceleration in rotationally supported disks.
- It is naturally expressed by MOND’s interpolation law, so it is a major success for MOND phenomenology.
- It does not logically prove that gravity is modified. Halo models can reproduce the relation if galaxy formation couples baryonic structure to halo structure.
- Its intrinsic scatter, bends, hooks and outliers are potentially more discriminating than the average relation itself.
The 2024 “Hooks & Bends” analysis treats departures from a simple smooth RAR as possible tests between explanations instead of assuming that a tight mean relation settles the issue. A 2023 Bayesian analysis jointly inferred the relation and galaxy parameters while testing intrinsic scatter and the external-field effect. Those approaches matter because the inferred stellar mass-to-light ratio, distance, inclination and gas mass affect both MOND and halo results.
Where galaxy type changes the comparison
Low-surface-brightness dwarfs
Dwarf and low-surface-brightness galaxies spend much of their disks in the low-acceleration regime, where MOND makes its largest departure from Newtonian expectations. Their slowly rising or unusually shaped curves therefore provide high leverage on the interpolation law. They are also difficult measurements: gas can be clumpy, non-circular motions can be important, distances may be uncertain and a small inclination error changes the deprojected speed.
Massive, bulge-dominated disks
In a massive bulge, the inner acceleration is high and often close to Newtonian. The discriminating information shifts to the transition radius and outer disk. Stellar population assumptions are especially consequential because a plausible change in the bulge mass-to-light ratio can alter the inferred residual attributed either to MOND or to a halo.
Galaxies with diverse inner curves
Observed galaxies include sharply rising, slowly rising, cored-looking and centrally concentrated curves. A single universal halo profile can struggle to cover that diversity without invoking baryonic feedback or altered halo physics. SIDM addresses this by allowing inner halos to thermalize, while MOND obtains the variety directly from the measured baryonic profiles. Neither statement removes the need to model measurement systematics.
Why fitted parameters and external fields matter
Rotation-curve comparisons are not based on speed alone. The main inputs include:

- Stellar mass-to-light ratio: infrared luminosity must be converted into stellar mass using a population model and an assumed initial mass function.
- Gas mass: neutral hydrogen and helium corrections affect the baryonic acceleration, especially in gas-rich dwarfs.
- Distance: it changes physical radii, luminosities and the conversion from angular to linear speed profiles.
- Inclination: deprojecting line-of-sight velocities can amplify small geometric errors.
- Non-circular motion: bars, warps and streaming gas can make a circular-orbit model inappropriate.
- External-field effect: some MOND formulations predict that a galaxy’s internal dynamics can be altered by an external gravitational field, even when the external field is too weak to produce visible tides.
A fair comparison propagates these uncertainties rather than fixing whichever values favor one framework. The Bayesian 2023 work is important for this reason: it infers the RAR and nuisance parameters together and tests whether the observed scatter is intrinsic or caused by measurement and modeling choices.

Why clusters are difficult for MOND
Galaxy clusters contain galaxies, hot X-ray gas and gravitationally lensed background objects. Applying MOND to the motions of galaxies and the gas often reduces the missing-mass requirement, but residual mass can remain, especially in the central regions. Explaining that residual may require additional unseen matter, such as ordinary but faint baryons or a neutrino-like component, depending on the relativistic MOND theory.
What the Bullet Cluster tests
In the Bullet Cluster, the hot gas—most of the ordinary baryonic mass—was slowed and displaced during a collision, while gravitational-lensing maps peak near the collisionless galaxies. This separation is naturally expected if a collisionless dark-matter component carries most of the gravitating mass. It is therefore a serious challenge to simple versions of MOND that contain no additional unseen matter.
It is not a mathematical one-observation “fatality” for every relativistic MOND proposal: a theory could add a suitable unseen component or modify how lensing responds to fields. The cost is that MOND then needs more ingredients beyond its economical disk-galaxy rule. Cluster dynamics and lensing are consequently a major reason the galaxy-scale verdict cannot be promoted directly to a complete cosmological verdict.

Cosmic microwave background and structure formation
Galaxies are one scale of evidence. A complete framework must also explain how tiny early-universe fluctuations grew into the observed web of galaxies, clusters and voids, while matching the acoustic features of the cosmic microwave background. Cold dark matter supplies a gravitating component that can begin clustering before ordinary matter decouples from radiation, making it a natural ingredient in the standard structure-formation calculation.
Best Value
MOND is primarily a low-acceleration phenomenology and requires a relativistic completion before it can make a full, independent prediction for the microwave background, lensing and cosmological growth. Relativistic MOND-inspired theories exist, but their additional fields and parameters must be tested on those observations rather than inferred from disk curves alone.
Ultralight dark matter and other halo alternatives
Dark-matter tests also discriminate among dark-matter models. Ultralight candidates can form wave-supported soliton-like cores whose size and density are linked to particle mass and halo properties. A 2022 comparison using SPARC galaxies disfavored some proposed soliton–halo relations and, under its stated assumptions, disfavored ultralight dark matter as 100% of cosmological dark matter across a broad mass range. That result does not reject every ultralight scenario or dark matter as a whole; it shows why “dark matter” should not be treated as one immutable rotation-curve template.
A practical way to judge a claim about “which fits better”
- Define the data set. Ask whether the claim concerns one galaxy, a selected sample or the full SPARC database, and whether the curves are quality-controlled.
- Check the baryonic model. Record the stellar mass-to-light ratio, gas correction, distance and inclination assumptions.
- Compare residuals and scatter. Inspect systematic trends with radius, surface brightness and galaxy type, not only an average χ2.
- Count flexibility. Note how many halo parameters, priors and feedback prescriptions are being used, and whether MOND’s interpolation function was fixed in advance.
- Test distinctive predictions. Examine RAR hooks and bends, external-field behavior, very low-surface-brightness systems and galaxies in different environments.
- Extend beyond disks. Include cluster masses, lensing, the Bullet Cluster, the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure.
- Require a relativistic theory. A proposal that fits non-relativistic rotation curves must also specify how light bends and how cosmological perturbations grow.
The bottom line for the reader’s questions
Does MOND fit galaxy rotation curves better than dark matter?
Often, in the narrow sense of a compact disk-galaxy phenomenology, yes. MOND ties the curve to the observed baryons with little freedom and captures the RAR and baryonic Tully–Fisher behavior. Well-developed halo models, especially self-interacting ones, can reproduce those same patterns, so a good MOND fit is not an exclusive proof.
Why are rotation curves evidence for dark matter?
Because outer speeds reveal more gravitational acceleration than visible stars and gas provide under Newtonian gravity. That is direct evidence for a mass discrepancy. Calling the discrepancy “dark matter” is an interpretation within the broader Newtonian and cosmological framework, not a fact that rotation curves identify independently of theory.
Can MOND explain flat curves without dark matter?
Yes. In its deep-MOND regime, the acceleration changes from gN to approximately √(a0gN), which yields an approximately constant outer speed for a finite baryonic mass distribution.
What does the radial-acceleration relation prove?
It proves a remarkably tight empirical relation between measured acceleration and the acceleration calculated from baryons in disk galaxies. It is a strong success for MOND’s organizing principle, but halo models can reproduce it through correlations established by galaxy formation. The relation’s detailed scatter and structure are more informative than its existence alone.
Is the Bullet Cluster fatal to MOND?
It is a major problem for a no-dark-matter version of MOND because lensing mass follows collisionless galaxies rather than the displaced hot gas. A relativistic MOND theory could add unseen matter or extra fields, but doing so reduces the simplicity that makes MOND attractive on galaxy scales.
