Momentum buys securities because their recent returns indicate a continuing trend. Value buys securities that appear cheap relative to business fundamentals or an estimate of intrinsic worth. The suitable approach depends on which kind of evidence you trust, how you react to extended underperformance, how much monitoring and trading you can sustain, and whether your portfolio is diversified beyond one style.
This is an educational comparison, not individualized financial advice. Historical factor premiums can disappear, reverse, or be consumed by costs. Before choosing a fund or portfolio, examine its actual rules, holdings, turnover, fees, tax consequences, benchmark and risk disclosures—not just the label on the product.

What momentum and value investing actually measure
Momentum follows recent price behavior
Momentum investing tries to benefit from trends that are already visible in market prices. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) summarizes the idea this way: “An investor using a momentum investing strategy seeks to capitalize on the continuance of existing trends in the market.” (SEC Investor Bulletin, 2014.)
A systematic equity portfolio might rank stocks by their returns over a defined lookback period, buy the relative winners and reduce or avoid the losers. Some implementations are long-only; others use short positions. The result is exposure to a return trend, not a judgment that a company is fundamentally cheap or expensive.

Price momentum is not identical to every form of trend following. A strategy can use different markets, lookback windows, weighting methods, market-risk controls and rebalance schedules. Those details can materially change volatility, turnover and results.
Value compares price with estimated worth
Value investing seeks securities whose market price appears low compared with an estimate of fundamental value. Investors may study cash flow, competitive position, balance-sheet strength, earnings power and management, then demand a margin of safety between their valuation and the quoted price.
Quantitative screens often use book value or earnings relative to market price. Those ratios are useful starting points, but a ratio screen is not automatically a complete intrinsic-value analysis. CFA Institute commentary warns that formulaic approaches can be described as “value investing” even when they do not comprehensively estimate what a business is worth (CFA Institute, 2017).

The differences at a glance
| Question | Momentum approach | Value approach |
|---|---|---|
| Primary signal | Recent relative or absolute price returns | Price compared with fundamentals or estimated intrinsic value |
| Typical research | Price history, ranking rules, signal strength and market state | Financial statements, forecasts, business quality, valuation and catalysts |
| Typical holding logic | Hold while the trend remains attractive; sell when rules signal deterioration | Hold until the thesis is realized, valuation reaches a target, or fundamentals invalidate it |
| Main behavioral challenge | Buying after a strong run and enduring abrupt reversals | Waiting while a cheap security stays cheap or proves to be impaired |
| Common implementation friction | Turnover, bid-ask spreads, taxes and signal whipsaws | Research errors, stale valuations, concentration and long holding periods |
What the historical evidence does—and does not—show
Momentum has a long record but uneven durability
A CFA Institute summary of research by Geczy and Samonov examined a 212-year sample from 1801 through 2012. In the constructed momentum strategy, average excess returns were about 0.4% per month. The same summary counted seven separate ten-year periods of negative momentum returns (CFA Institute, 2016).
Those figures describe a historical research design, not a forecast, a retail-fund return or a promise after expenses and taxes. The study also found that market state affected results substantially and that momentum became more exposed to market risk during extended states. Its discussion of dynamic beta hedging is an academic result for that particular design, not a general instruction to hedge a personal portfolio.

Value results depend heavily on the definition of value
“Value” can mean a diversified portfolio built from accounting ratios, a concentrated portfolio of businesses an analyst believes are misunderstood, or many processes in between. The 2017 CFA Institute summary reported little compelling evidence that simple formulaic value strategies delivered superior performance for U.S. equities in the analysis it discussed (CFA Institute, 2017). That finding does not disprove every form of fundamental value investing; it shows why the label alone cannot establish an edge.
Combining the styles has historical support, not a guarantee
A 2013 CFA Institute digest reviewed value and momentum across eight asset classes: stocks in the United States, United Kingdom, continental Europe and Japan; global equity indices; currencies; government bonds; and commodity futures. Samples ended in 2011. In those historical samples, combined value-and-momentum portfolios had higher Sharpe ratios than either standalone approach (CFA Institute, 2013).
A higher historical Sharpe ratio does not establish a current expected return. It does suggest that signals with different economic behavior may diversify one another, provided the investor can implement both at reasonable cost.
How a momentum strategy is built
A credible momentum process is a set of written rules, not a stream of tips about whatever has recently risen.
- Define the investable universe. Specify countries, market capitalization, liquidity, security types and any exclusions. A universe that includes illiquid shares can make a backtest look better than a live portfolio.
- Choose the signal. State the lookback period, whether returns are absolute or relative, and whether the most recent month is excluded to reduce short-term reversal effects. Do not change the window after seeing which one worked historically.
- Rank and construct positions. Decide how many securities qualify, whether weights are equal, capitalization-based or volatility-scaled, and how sector or country concentration is limited.
- Set a rebalance schedule. Monthly, quarterly and other schedules create different turnover and responsiveness. Every rebalance should follow the same documented rule.
- Control risk. Establish position limits, liquidity requirements, maximum sector exposure and procedures for unusually volatile markets. If using leverage or short positions, define collateral and loss limits in advance.
- Test realistic implementation. Include spreads, commissions, market impact, taxes where relevant, delistings, short availability and delays between signal calculation and trade execution.
Momentum can buy a security after much of its rise has already occurred. A trend can end before the next rebalance, creating a rapid loss. An SEC-filed fund disclosure puts the risk plainly: “Momentum can turn quickly, and stocks that previously have exhibited high momentum may not experience continued positive momentum.” (SEC filing.)

How a value strategy is built
- Define what “cheap” means. Possible measures include earnings, book value, free cash flow, sales, enterprise value or a calculated sum of business parts. Each measure behaves differently across industries and economic cycles.
- Separate cheapness from quality. Investigate debt, cash generation, competitive advantages, accounting policies, dilution, customer concentration and management incentives. A low multiple can reflect genuine deterioration.
- Estimate intrinsic value. Use explicit assumptions about revenue, margins, reinvestment, terminal value and a discount rate. Record a range rather than presenting a precise number as fact.
- Demand a margin of safety. Buy only when the price is sufficiently below your conservative valuation to absorb forecasting errors.
- Identify a reason the gap could close. Catalysts might include improved cash flow, a restructuring, an asset sale or industry normalization. A catalyst is not required for every holding, but an indefinite wait has an opportunity cost.
- Define sell rules. Sell when the valuation target is reached, the thesis changes, the balance sheet becomes unsafe or a better opportunity appears. Do not let a falling price alone turn into an unexamined averaging-down policy.
Value investors face a different form of timing risk. The market may eventually recognize a business—or may not. A security that looks inexpensive can be a “value trap” if its earnings, assets or competitive position are permanently impaired. Fund risk disclosures also note that value valuations may never improve (SEC filing).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich style’s underperformance can you actually withstand?
The most useful choice is behavioral as well as statistical. Ask which failure pattern would make you abandon a plan at the worst moment.
If you choose momentum
- You must accept buying securities that may look expensive because price strength is the signal.
- You need a rule for selling after a reversal instead of waiting for a personal opinion to recover.
- You should be prepared for frequent trades and periods when a broad market rally leaves your selected winners behind.
- You must tolerate the possibility that several signals reverse together in a stressed market.
If you choose value
- You must accept that a cheap security can underperform for years.
- You need the time and skill to distinguish temporary problems from structural impairment.
- You should be comfortable with a thesis that depends on estimates rather than a purely mechanical price signal.
- You must resist increasing concentration simply because a holding has fallen.
Do not assign a style solely from age, a market forecast or a goal stated in isolation. A retirement date, emergency-fund need or other liability should first determine the portfolio’s overall risk and liquidity. Style exposure is a secondary design choice inside that plan.
Costs, turnover and taxes can reverse the result
Academic premiums are generally reported before an individual investor’s complete implementation costs. CFA Institute’s overview of active equity strategies emphasizes trading costs, turnover assumptions, data quality and model pitfalls (CFA Institute, 2026).
| Cost or constraint | Why it matters | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Fund or portfolio expense | Recurring fees reduce net returns every year | What is the total expense ratio, and are other operating costs excluded? |
| Turnover | More trades can create spreads, market impact and taxable distributions | What was the historical turnover, and how often does the strategy normally rebalance? |
| Bid-ask spread and liquidity | The quoted price may not be the price at which a sizable order executes | Are the holdings liquid in the markets and time zones where you trade? |
| Taxes | Short holding periods and distributions can change after-tax outcomes | Which account type will hold the strategy, and what tax treatment applies in your jurisdiction? |
| Data and execution | Delayed, revised or unavailable data can make a backtest unrealistic | Could the live investor have known the data at the stated decision time? |
Never compare a gross academic excess return directly with the net return of a traded fund or personal account. Exact results depend on the universe, signal, weighting, rebalance timing, market regime and expenses.

Diversification matters more than the style label
Two portfolios can both be called “momentum” while holding very different sectors, countries and company sizes. Likewise, two value portfolios may have little overlap if one uses book value and the other uses cash-flow estimates. Review the actual holdings and exposures.
- Holdings: Count positions and inspect the largest weights.
- Sector and industry: Identify whether cheapness or price strength is concentrated in one sector.
- Geography and currency: Check country exposure and the effect of exchange rates.
- Asset class: Decide whether the strategy is limited to equities or also uses bonds, currencies or commodities.
- Factor overlap: A portfolio may unintentionally combine momentum with growth, quality, size or high volatility.
Combining styles can diversify signals, but it does not remove market risk. A blended portfolio can still lose money, experience correlated stress or lag a simple market portfolio for a long period.
Should you combine momentum and value?
Combining the approaches is reasonable when you understand each sleeve and can maintain both through different market conditions. There are several ways to do it:
Allocate separate sleeves
Keep a written percentage for a momentum allocation and a value allocation. Rebalance at a defined interval or when an allocation crosses a stated band. This makes the trade-off visible and prevents whichever style recently performed best from silently taking over.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use a blended ranking
Rank securities on both valuation and momentum, then select those that score well on each or combine standardized scores. This can reduce exposure to very cheap stocks with collapsing prices and to very strong stocks with extreme valuations, but it introduces model choices that must be tested honestly.
Best Value
Blend at the portfolio level
Hold independent strategies and evaluate the combined portfolio’s volatility, drawdowns, turnover, concentration and tax consequences. Do not assume that a blend is automatically safer; inspect how the holdings behave during the same market shock.
Whichever method you use, document target weights, rebalance triggers, maximum position sizes and the conditions under which the strategy is discontinued. A combination that you cannot explain or maintain is not genuinely diversified.
Backtesting and quantitative pitfalls
Historical testing can help you understand a process, but it can also manufacture confidence. Before relying on a reported result, check for:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Look-ahead bias: using information that was not available when the historical trade would have occurred.
- Survivorship bias: excluding companies that failed, delisted or merged.
- Data mining: trying many signals and reporting only the one that worked.
- Overfitting: tailoring parameters to one period so closely that they fail elsewhere.
- Unrealistic turnover: assuming every order fills at a closing price without market impact.
- Missing costs: omitting spreads, commissions, financing, taxes or short-borrow fees.
- Unavailable shorts: assuming losers can always be borrowed and sold.
A robust test uses out-of-sample periods, realistic trading assumptions and sensitivity checks across markets and parameter choices. Even then, it describes historical behavior rather than a guaranteed future premium.
A practical decision framework
- Set the portfolio’s job first. Define required liquidity, acceptable drawdown and the time horizon before selecting a style.
- Choose your evidence. Momentum requires confidence in a repeatable price signal; value requires confidence in valuation work and business analysis.
- Choose your maintenance burden. Can you monitor scheduled signals and trade them, or can you research businesses and update valuations without drifting from your rules?
- Estimate the net implementation. Compare fees, turnover, spreads, taxes and operational complexity—not just published historical returns.
- Limit concentration. Set maximum weights and review sector, country, currency and factor exposures.
- Write the failure plan. Specify what would make you pause, reduce or terminate the strategy. Do not create new rules during a panic.
- Review on a schedule. Evaluate adherence, costs and risk at predetermined intervals rather than changing styles after a single disappointing quarter.
How to evaluate a fund or portfolio claiming either style
Before investing, read the prospectus, methodology and current holdings. Confirm:
- the exact definition of momentum or value;
- the eligible universe and exclusions;
- weighting, liquidity and concentration limits;
- rebalance frequency and turnover;
- benchmark and performance history, including periods of underperformance;
- expense ratio and other expenses;
- use of derivatives, leverage, short selling or securities lending;
- tax and distribution characteristics for your account;
- principal risks, including volatility, value traps or rapid momentum reversals.
A familiar style name is not a substitute for these details. Two products with the same label can produce very different portfolios and investor experiences.
Bottom line: fit the process to your temperament and resources
Choose momentum if you can follow explicit price-based rules, accept quick reversals and afford the trading and monitoring burden. Choose value if you can perform or trust disciplined fundamental valuation, tolerate long waits and recognize that cheap assets can deteriorate permanently. Consider combining them only when you can control the added complexity and keep the overall portfolio diversified.
