Concept artist Alex Jay Brady says a ship in the mobile naval game Modern Warships is based on a 2014 ekranoplan design of theirs, and that nobody asked permission. Developer Artstorm has publicly replied that the design “was used as a reference without proper clearance.” The dispute is still developing. Kotaku’s report of October 6, 2026 doesn’t say whether the two sides have reached a deal or whether the ship has been removed.
What was reported
According to Kotaku, Brady noticed a vessel in Modern Warships called the RF Bartini A-2000-7. Brady said it was based on their 2014 ekranoplan concept. Kotaku describes an ekranoplan as a ground-effect vehicle that travels close to the water’s surface.

Brady posted that they had not authorized the use. The post, as quoted by Kotaku, reads: “I did not give @ModernWarships permission to use my ekrano design, but I have to say she’s looking great. Much more detailed than my sketches. Honestly if they’d just asked and sent me some $$$$ Id have had zero issue with them using it.”

How similar are the designs?
That assessment comes from Brady. Kotaku quotes Brady’s comments to IGN: the in-game ship is substantially the same as the original apart from minor differences, and it reproduces details Brady considers mistakes in their own concept. Kotaku’s report doesn’t include an independent technical comparison or a legal determination. Whether this amounts to infringement is not something the coverage establishes.

Note the wording. The studio acknowledges using the design as a reference and doing so without proper clearance. It does not, in the quoted reply, say more about how closely the ship follows the original. It also states an intention to contact Brady directly.

What is still unknown
- Whether Artstorm and Brady agreed on payment, credit or licensing terms.
- Whether the RF Bartini A-2000-7 stays in the game, is changed or is removed.
- Whether anyone has independently compared the two designs side by side.
The account rests on Kotaku’s report, which quotes the public posts and relays IGN’s reporting. This article hasn’t independently verified the original social posts.

Kotaku relays IGN’s estimate that obtaining the ship through random spins could cost roughly $50 to $100, and that buying it outright could cost up to $700. These are IGN’s reported 2026 estimates, not official prices, and in-game costs can change. They explain why Brady’s complaint about missing payment drew attention, but they do not show what, if anything, the studio owes.
