Why the reboot should be played chronologically
The three games form one reboot continuity rather than a set of unrelated interpretations. Modern Warfare (2019) establishes the setting, the political crisis and the version of the special-forces team that later campaigns build on. MWII moves that narrative forward, and MWIII follows the events of MWII directly.

“Indirect continuation” does not mean MWII is a remake of the 2019 campaign or a side story with no connection. Activision’s October 18, 2022 launch overview, written by James Mattone, describes MWII as an indirect continuation that takes place three years after Task Force 141’s original formation. That time marker places the sequel in an evolving timeline rather than restarting the conflict.
MWIII has an even clearer relationship to its predecessor. In its August 22, 2023 campaign announcement, Call of Duty staff described it as “the direct sequel to the events of Modern Warfare II.” Starting with MWIII therefore means entering the latest stage of an existing plot. You can play it, but you will encounter consequences and relationships that were introduced earlier.
What chronological order gives you
- The initial 2019 setup before the later escalation.
- The development of Task Force 141 between the first and second campaigns.
- The narrative sequence from MWII into its direct sequel, MWIII.
- A clearer understanding of why later missions refer back to earlier events.
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Modern Warfare (2019) is the starting point because it is the first campaign in this reboot continuity. Its central premise follows special forces and freedom fighters attempting to recover stolen chemical weapons across Europe and the Middle East.
That premise matters for more than the opening mission. It establishes the reboot’s version of modern conflict: an international crisis, irregular partners and a threat that crosses national borders. Later entries assume that this world and its alliances already exist, so the 2019 campaign provides the baseline against which the sequels make sense.

Who should start here?
- Anyone new to the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline.
- Players who want the events in release and narrative order.
- Readers deciding between similarly titled games from different eras.
The official campaign description does not establish that this is the shortest, easiest or best-reviewed entry, so those are not reliable reasons to rank it first. It is first because it begins the reboot’s story.
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)
Modern Warfare II is the second campaign in the reboot sequence. Activision calls it an indirect continuation of the 2019 story and places it three years after Task Force 141’s formation.
Its setup expands the scale of the threat. The official overview identifies the successor of a foreign general, an international cartel and stolen U.S. ballistic missiles as major elements. It also frames the conflict around a revenge-driven alliance. These details show why MWII works best after the first game: the campaign is advancing an existing team and world rather than introducing a completely separate premise.
What “indirect continuation” means here
The phrase distinguishes MWII from a scene-for-scene continuation. The story moves forward in time and develops the consequences of the reboot’s earlier events, but the official wording still connects it directly to the 2019 narrative. Treat it as chapter two, not as an optional remake or an unrelated campaign with the same name.

When to play it
Play MWII immediately after finishing the 2019 campaign. Doing so preserves the progression from chemical-weapons crisis to the larger missile and cartel threat, while keeping the three-year timeline detail in context.
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023)
Modern Warfare III is the third and latest campaign in the reboot sequence covered here. It is explicitly a direct sequel to MWII, so it belongs after the 2022 game even if its mission design is the feature that interests you most.
The campaign combines traditional cinematic missions with Open Combat Missions. Official campaign material highlights Open Combat Missions as providing varied approaches, making MWIII the entry with the clearest emphasis on player choice in how objectives can be tackled.

Cinematic missions are the more directed form associated with the series’ established campaign structure. Open Combat Missions add a less linear format in which the official description emphasizes different approaches. The sources do not establish how many missions use each format, nor do they provide a reliable campaign-length comparison, so it is better to describe the contrast than to assign a numerical advantage.

Who may prefer to begin with MWIII?
A player whose overriding priority is the Open Combat Mission format may be tempted to start here. That is a valid format preference, but it is not the recommended story order. If you begin with MWIII, expect to be entering the conclusion of an arc whose immediate predecessor is MWII.

- Identify the year before installing. Select Modern Warfare (2019), not an older game with the same subtitle. The year is the simplest way to distinguish the reboot opener.

- Continue with Modern Warfare II (2022). Treat it as the next chapter, noting that its official timeline places it three years after Task Force 141’s formation.

Do not confuse the reboot with the original trilogy
The title “Modern Warfare” covers two different continuities. The games discussed in this guide are the reboot releases from 2019, 2022 and 2023. Earlier Modern Warfare games belong to the original trilogy and are not interchangeable with these entries simply because their names overlap.
When buying or downloading a game, verify the release year in the store listing and on the product page. The 2019, 2022 and 2023 labels prevent the most common ordering mistake: treating a similarly titled older release as part of the reboot sequence.

If you will play only one campaign
The strongest single-game recommendation depends on what you mean by “first.” For a newcomer seeking the reboot’s beginning, choose Modern Warfare (2019). For the latest mission design, MWIII is the relevant entry because it adds Open Combat Missions, but it is also the third chapter and a direct sequel to MWII.
There is no evidence in the cited official material to declare one campaign shortest, easiest, most satisfying or best reviewed. If those are your deciding criteria, you need independent, current evaluations rather than assuming that release order answers them. The evidence here supports a story-order recommendation and a mission-structure distinction, not a quality ranking.
