If a Modern Warfare 4 keypad code is rejected, a lock does nothing, or the code cannot be entered, do not assume there is one universal password. Activision’s current support guidance points first to a frozen or outdated game, an inactive objective, an input-device problem, or PC software interference. Use the platform-specific checks below, then report an unlisted defect with enough detail for it to be reproduced.
What a non-working keypad or lock usually means
Three different failures can look identical on screen:

- No interaction prompt: the mission objective, trigger, or nearby position is not active, so the keypad or lock is not ready to accept input.
- Prompt appears but the code is rejected: the code may belong to a different mission, difficulty state, patch, or step, or the game may not be registering one of your inputs.
- The interaction freezes, ignores input, or crashes: the game, console, PC, controller, keyboard, or another running application may be at fault.
Activision’s currently published support material does not provide a universal Modern Warfare 4 keypad or lock code. A code found for another mission or version is not evidence that it applies to your objective. Verify the mission and patch before trying any sequence repeatedly.

Do these checks in order
The order matters. Start with reversible software fixes before buying equipment or repeatedly entering an unknown code.

- Record the exact situation. Note the mission name, objective text, platform, game version or patch, input method, and whether you see an interaction prompt. A short description such as “Campaign, keypad beside the locked service door, PlayStation 5, prompt visible but digits do not register” is more useful than “the code is broken.”
- Quit Modern Warfare 4 completely. Do not leave it suspended in a quick-resume or rest mode state. Relaunch it and return to the same objective.
- Restart the device. If the game froze or the interaction remains dead, reboot the console or restart the PC. Activision lists quitting and restarting the game, and rebooting the console when necessary, among its first responses to freezes.
- Install pending updates. Update the console or PC operating system, the game client, and any required platform services. Out-of-date system software can leave an otherwise correct interaction in a broken state.
- Reconnect the input device. Pair the controller again, reconnect a wired cable, try another USB port, or test a spare controller or keyboard if one is available.
- Remove PC interference. Close overlays, recording tools, input-remapping utilities, and other background applications before launching the game again.
- Re-enter the area only after the objective is active. Follow the current mission instruction until the keypad or lock displays its prompt. Do not brute-force an unknown code while the interaction is inactive.
- Check the known-issues page. Look for a matching mission, platform, and symptom. If the issue is not listed, submit a bug report with your reproduction details.
Fixes by symptom
No keypad or lock prompt appears
Move back to the preceding objective and complete any required interaction, dialogue, pickup, or combat step. Mission scripting can keep a door or keypad inert until the game marks the objective active. Reload the last checkpoint after confirming the objective text, then approach the device again from the intended side. If the prompt still never appears after a full restart and updates, treat it as a possible mission scripting defect rather than a wrong code.
The prompt appears, but digits or buttons do nothing
Test whether ordinary movement and menu navigation respond. If all controls are delayed or absent, restart the game and the device before testing the keypad again. On a console, reconnect or re-pair the controller and try a different port or a known-good controller. On PC, test the keyboard and mouse without remapping software, overlays, or recording applications running. If only the keypad fails while other controls work, capture the exact mission and patch information for a bug report.
The code is entered, but the lock rejects it
Stop repeated guesses. Confirm that the code came from the same mission, objective, platform edition, and current patch. The official support pages do not establish one code that works across every keypad or lock. A sequence that belongs to another walkthrough, a different mission branch, or an earlier build can be perfectly valid elsewhere and still be rejected here. Restart, update, and retry only when the intended prompt is active.

Quit the game and relaunch it. If the problem returns, reboot the console or PC, then install all pending updates. On PC, close every overlay, capture or recording program, input remapper, and nonessential background application before starting the game. Activision warns that third-party input-remapping software, overlays, and recording software can interfere with gameplay or disrupt the boot process.

The table describes isolation steps, not a promise that every listed platform has identical content or controls. Use the controls and edition supplied with your copy of Modern Warfare 4.
Controller versus keyboard and mouse
Controller
Disconnect and reconnect the controller before relaunching the game. For a wired device, try a different cable and USB port; for a wireless device, re-pair it and check that another device has not taken control of the connection. A spare controller is useful as a test, not as proof that the original is defective. Activision does not guarantee functionality with third-party controllers, chips, memory cards, or cables, so an accessory that works in another game may still be outside the supported setup.
Keyboard and mouse
Confirm that the game detects the keyboard and mouse in its settings and that the intended key is not being intercepted by a remapper or overlay. Close macro, capture, chat-overlay, and recording utilities, then relaunch the game. If a controller is connected at the same time, disconnect it temporarily to determine whether input focus is switching between devices. Test the keypad with a basic, unmodified keyboard before changing bindings again.
PC software conflicts to remove
Activision specifically identifies input-remapping software, overlays, and recording software as possible sources of gameplay or boot problems. Other background programs can also compete for input focus or graphics resources. Use a clean test session:

- Save or close any recording and streaming session.
- Exit game overlays and chat overlays rather than merely hiding them.
- Quit controller remappers, macro utilities, and virtual-input drivers.
- Close nonessential background applications.
- Update the video-card driver and restart the PC.
- Launch Modern Warfare 4 before reopening optional utilities one at a time.
If the keypad works in the clean session, re-enable applications individually to identify the conflict. Keep the conflicting utility closed when playing that mission or report the interaction together with the utility name and version.
Why restarting and updating can fix an apparently correct code
A keypad interaction depends on more than the digits. The game must load the correct mission state, register the nearby trigger, accept the selected input device, and transition the objective after the final button press. A suspended session, a crashed process, or mismatched system and game software can break one of those steps without changing the visible code. Restarting clears the current process; rebooting clears device-level state; updates address known compatibility problems. These actions cannot make an unverified code correct, but they distinguish a temporary input or state failure from a wrong sequence.
Should you buy another controller?
Use replacement hardware only after restart, update, connection, and PC-interference checks. A basic USB gaming controller can help isolate a suspected controller failure, but confirm compatibility with your platform and keep the return policy in mind. The evidence available from Activision does not guarantee that every third-party controller or cable will function with the game.

Known issues and bug reports
Activision’s continuously updated known-issues information currently includes a resolved Xbox-on-PC Campaign launch issue. It does not currently establish a keypad or lock-input defect. “Not listed” does not prove that your problem is unique; it means you should provide a report if the standard steps do not resolve it.

When submitting a Modern Warfare 4 bug report, include:
- Platform and hardware model.
- Campaign or other mode, exact mission, and objective text.
- Game patch or build and the date you observed the issue.
- Controller, keyboard and mouse, or other input device, including wired or wireless connection.
- Whether the prompt is missing, appears but rejects input, ignores controls, freezes, or crashes.
- What happened after quitting, rebooting, updating, changing ports, and disabling PC background applications.
- Numbered reproduction steps that another player could follow.
A short video showing the objective, prompt, input, and resulting failure can make the report easier to reproduce, provided it does not expose personal account information.
Common mistakes that waste time
Using a code from a different mission
Search results and videos often combine several keypad interactions. Match the mission and objective, not just the appearance of the door or lock. If the source does not identify the same mission and current version, treat the sequence as unverified.

Entering digits before the game presents the interaction prompt cannot confirm whether the code is wrong. Advance the mission until the objective is active, then test once after a clean relaunch.
Leaving quick-resume or suspended sessions running
A suspended process can preserve a bad state. Fully quit the game and relaunch it before deciding that the keypad is permanently broken.
Changing many variables at once
If you replace the controller, change bindings, install an overlay, and alter graphics settings simultaneously, you will not know what solved or caused the problem. Change one factor at a time after the baseline restart and update checks.
