Modern Warfare 4 does not have a documented co-op Campaign. Activision’s official overview separates Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, and describes DMZ as playable solo or with a squad. It does not list a co-op Campaign or a separate Spec Ops mode. If you want a shared story, Black Ops 7 is the direct same-franchise alternative: its Campaign supports up to four players and includes a replayable Endgame. For a squad sandbox inside MW4, choose DMZ; for traditional Zombies survival, choose Black Ops 7.
Does Modern Warfare 4 have campaign co-op?
Not according to the currently published official information. The Modern Warfare 4 overview names three distinct components: Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. Campaign is presented as its own mode, while DMZ is explicitly described as playable solo or with a squad. No co-op Campaign feature is documented, and the overview does not identify Spec Ops as a separate launch mode.

That distinction matters because a solo Campaign and a squad-based mode serve different purposes. A campaign normally delivers authored missions, scripted story beats and progression through a fixed narrative. DMZ is an extraction sandbox in which you deploy, collect items, take risks and attempt to leave alive. Multiplayer is a competitive match playlist. Having squad access in DMZ does not turn the Campaign into a two-player or four-player story experience.

Do not assume that the presence of DMZ or any future playlist automatically adds cooperative Campaign missions. What co-op-style options are actually in MW4?
DMZ: the squad alternative inside Modern Warfare 4
DMZ is MW4’s clearest option for playing with friends. Activision describes it as a living extraction sandbox built around the choices to “loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract.” You can deploy alone or with a squad, so your group can coordinate routes, divide equipment and decide when the rewards are worth the danger.
DMZ should not be treated as a replacement for a linear story. The defining loop is persistent risk: enter a live area, gather resources, complete objectives or confront other players, then reach an extraction point. A failed run can cost what you carried, while a successful extraction improves your next deployment. The appeal is emergent decision-making rather than following a sequence of campaign chapters.
- Best for: groups that enjoy planning, unpredictable encounters and high-stakes extraction runs.
- Not designed for: players seeking a scripted two-player narrative with shared checkpoints.
- Team approach: assign a navigator, a combat-focused player and a loot or objective specialist, then agree on an extraction trigger before the match becomes chaotic.
DMZ also has a technical requirement that is easy to miss: Activision says Multiplayer and DMZ need a continuous internet connection because of texture streaming. A squad should make sure every player has a stable connection before treating DMZ as the group’s main activity.
Multiplayer: reliable short-session play with friends
MW4 Multiplayer launches with 12 all-new 6v6 maps. The launch listing also includes Gunfight, Ground War: Combat Outpost and Kill Block. This gives a group several ways to play together without pretending that any of them is cooperative story content.

The official editions information confirms two-player split-screen Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X. That is local competitive play, not split-screen Campaign co-op. Online modes still require an internet connection and the relevant platform subscription. If your group is mixing local and online players, verify the console setup and account requirements before buying multiple copies.
Spec Ops: what the published information does and does not say
Readers often use “Spec Ops” to mean short cooperative missions separate from the main Campaign. The current MW4 overview does not list Spec Ops among its distinct modes. Because no official briefing in the available information confirms a Spec Ops playlist, it is safer to plan around DMZ and Multiplayer rather than buy MW4 expecting classic Spec Ops missions.
This is a documentation qualification, not a claim that Activision can never add another mode. A later announcement could change the lineup. Until an official MW4 page names Spec Ops and explains its player count, assume it is not a confirmed launch feature.

Why Black Ops 7 is the strongest same-franchise co-op alternative
Black Ops 7 directly addresses the feature MW4 does not document: a shared story campaign. Activision’s briefing says players can go solo or “squad up with up to three other players” in its Co-Op Campaign. That means a party of up to four can progress through the narrative together.
The Campaign also leads into a replayable Endgame experience. This is important for groups that finish a linear story and still want a reason to return. Instead of treating co-op as a one-time tour, Black Ops 7 combines the authored Campaign with an additional repeatable destination.

How the four-player Campaign changes group planning
- Party size: one player alone or up to four total, so a full friend group can stay together without splitting into separate squads.
- Story focus: the cooperative mode is part of the Campaign structure, rather than an unrelated survival playlist.
- Replay value: the Endgame gives the party a repeatable activity after the main progression.
- Progression continuity: XP, weapon progression, camouflage and challenge progress carry across Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies.
That connected progression also changes how you can divide play sessions. A player who prefers Campaign missions can still advance weapons and challenges used in Multiplayer or Zombies, while a Zombies-focused player does not have to maintain an entirely separate progression track. The briefing confirms the shared categories of progression; it does not promise that every unlock is earned at the same speed in each mode.
Black Ops 7 Zombies and survival modes
If your group means “co-op” when it says Zombies, Black Ops 7 is the better fit than MW4’s documented lineup. Activision says round-based Zombies returns, adds survival maps and confirms Dead Ops Arcade 4. Round-based Zombies supplies the familiar escalating survival loop: stay alive through successive rounds, manage resources and coordinate when to risk a stronger objective or retreat.

Round-based play is structured around escalating enemy waves rather than a single extraction. The group’s central decision is how long to remain in the fight as pressure increases. That makes roles easy to understand: one player can focus on crowd control, another on objectives and another on reviving or managing the team’s escape plan. The official briefing also mentions new vehicle gameplay and a large set of locations, so the mode is not limited to a single static arena.
Survival maps
Survival maps give the party another PvE format to learn. They are a natural choice when your friends want repeatable combat and coordination without competing against another human team. The available briefing confirms their inclusion but does not provide a complete map count or detailed rules for every map, so do not infer a specific number of locations from the announcement.
Dead Ops Arcade 4
Dead Ops Arcade 4 is a top-down, twin-stick Zombies shooter with frantic arcade-style action and XP progression. Activision confirms co-op for up to four players. It is a useful alternative when the group wants shorter, more immediately readable sessions: the camera, arcade presentation and four-player limit make it distinct from both the first-person Campaign and a conventional 6v6 match.

MW4 and Black Ops 7 multiplayer compared
Both games support competitive group play, but their announced launch footprints differ. MW4 lists 12 all-new 6v6 maps, plus Gunfight, Ground War: Combat Outpost and Kill Block. Black Ops 7’s launch briefing lists 16 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps.

Choose MW4 if the 12-map 6v6 package, Gunfight or its larger Ground War-style battles are the main attraction. Choose Black Ops 7 if your group wants more announced 6v6 maps, two 20v20 maps and a broader mix of competitive and cooperative activities.
Which game should your group buy?
Choose MW4 when extraction and competitive play are the priority
MW4 makes sense for a group that wants to enter DMZ together, take calculated risks and then switch to competitive matches. Its mode lineup is focused: Campaign for solo play, Multiplayer for PvP and DMZ for squad extraction. That focus can be an advantage if your friends already know they prefer modern gunfights and an extraction sandbox over Zombies rounds.
It is also the relevant choice if local two-player Multiplayer is important. The confirmed split-screen feature applies to PS5 and Xbox Series X, allowing two people to play Multiplayer on one console. It does not add local co-op to the Campaign.

Choose Black Ops 7 when the story must be shared
Black Ops 7 is the straightforward recommendation for a party that wants to experience missions together. Up to four players can join the Co-Op Campaign, and the replayable Endgame gives the group a post-campaign activity. That combination is closer to the classic co-op expectation than MW4’s DMZ.

Round-based Zombies, survival maps and four-player Dead Ops Arcade 4 give Black Ops 7 several PvE routes. MW4’s DMZ can be cooperative, but it is extraction-oriented and includes the risks and uncertainty of that format. It should not be presented as Zombies by another name.
Choose based on session length
- Short competitive sessions: MW4 Gunfight or standard 6v6 matches.
- Longer high-risk runs: MW4 DMZ, where the team decides when to extract.
- Organized narrative nights: Black Ops 7 Co-Op Campaign.
- Repeatable PvE evenings: Black Ops 7 round-based Zombies or Dead Ops Arcade 4.
MW4 launch, editions and technical requirements
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23, 2026. Physical PS5 and Xbox Series X editions are sold through select retailers and include the full base game. Retail inventory can vary, so the existence of a physical edition does not guarantee stock at every store.
Console access
- PS5 and Xbox Series X support two-player split-screen Multiplayer.
- Online Multiplayer and DMZ require an internet connection and the relevant platform subscription.
- Split-screen confirmation applies to Multiplayer; it is not evidence of Campaign co-op.
PC readiness
For PC, Activision identifies TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot as requirements. Check both in your system firmware and operating-system security settings before purchase. Multiplayer and DMZ also require a continuous internet connection because of texture streaming, so an intermittently connected PC may not meet the practical requirement even if the game installs correctly.
- Open your motherboard or system firmware settings and confirm TPM 2.0 is enabled. The label may appear as a platform security processor or firmware TPM, depending on hardware.
- Confirm Secure Boot is enabled in the same firmware environment. If enabling it requires changing from legacy boot mode, check that your operating-system drive uses a compatible partition layout first.
- Update the platform software and graphics drivers before the first online session.
- Test the internet connection from the same location where you will play. DMZ and Multiplayer depend on continuous connectivity for texture streaming.
- If you plan to play with friends, verify voice chat, NAT or router restrictions and the platform subscription on every account, not just the account that purchased the game.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking squad access for Campaign co-op
DMZ’s squad language can be easy to misread. A squad means cooperative play inside the extraction mode; it does not establish that Campaign missions accept multiple players. Look for an explicit Campaign player count before assuming a story can be shared.

“Spec Ops,” “survival” and “Zombies” describe different design traditions. MW4’s published overview does not confirm Spec Ops, while Black Ops 7 explicitly confirms round-based Zombies, survival maps and Dead Ops Arcade 4. Compare the announced loop and player count rather than relying on a familiar label.
Buying for split-screen without checking the platform
MW4’s confirmed two-player split-screen Multiplayer support is limited to PS5 and Xbox Series X in the cited editions information. Do not generalize that feature to PC or other platforms without a platform-specific confirmation.
Ignoring PC security prerequisites
TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are prerequisites, not optional optimization settings, for the PC configuration described by Activision. Check them before buying so that a firmware change does not become an unexpected first-day problem.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you need a shared narrative? Buy or play Black Ops 7; MW4’s Campaign has no documented co-op.
- Do you want four-player Zombies-style PvE? Black Ops 7 offers round-based Zombies, survival maps and Dead Ops Arcade 4, with Dead Ops Arcade 4 confirmed for up to four.
- Do you want squad extraction in the Modern Warfare setting? MW4 DMZ is the relevant mode.
- Do you mainly play competitive 6v6? Compare MW4’s 12 all-new maps with Black Ops 7’s 16 announced maps.
- Do you want larger battles? MW4 lists Ground War: Combat Outpost; Black Ops 7 lists two 20v20 maps.
- Do you need local play? MW4 confirms two-player split-screen Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
- Are you on PC? Verify TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a reliable continuous internet connection before purchase.
- Is your target date before launch? MW4’s announced worldwide launch date is October 23, 2026.
Bottom line for co-op buyers
Modern Warfare 4 is not the right purchase if your non-negotiable requirement is a cooperative Campaign. Its documented alternatives are DMZ for squad-based extraction and Multiplayer for competitive play, with no separate Spec Ops mode confirmed in the published overview. Black Ops 7 is the better same-franchise choice for a shared story or Zombies: its Co-Op Campaign supports up to four players, its Endgame is replayable, and its Zombies lineup includes round-based play, survival maps and four-player Dead Ops Arcade 4.
