Yes, in a limited technical demonstration. Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal has ported the open-source KytyPS5 emulator to Xbox Series X, calling the Xbox build PS5X. It runs in the console’s official Developer Mode and has booted four reported PlayStation 5 game builds. That does not amount to general PS5 backward compatibility: performance is uneven, compatibility is narrow, and no stable, consumer-ready release has been established.
What PS5X is—and what it is not
PS5X is an experimental Xbox Series X port of KytyPS5, an early-stage PlayStation 5 emulator. The port is intended for research and testing in Xbox Developer Mode, rather than as a retail feature available from the normal Xbox dashboard.

The demonstrations show that selected PS5 software can start and accept Xbox controller input on Microsoft’s hardware. They do not show that an Xbox Series X can run the PS5 library generally, nor that the tested games are completable from beginning to end. The project’s developer described it as an “experimental Xbox port” running PS5 homebrew and game backups directly on the console.

| Game | Reported result |
|---|---|
| GEX Trilogy | Booted in the PS5X demonstrations; Xbox controller input was recognized. |
| Hellboy: Web of Wyrd | Booted in the demonstrations; controller support was reported across the tested builds. |
| Marvel Cosmic Invasion | Booted in the demonstrations; controller support was reported. |
| Quake II | Booted and shown in footage at approximately 25–45 frames per second. |
Some of the games had working audio, although the published reports did not identify which titles. Another PS5X menu reportedly listed games including Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and Gran Turismo 7; the available footage did not demonstrate those titles running. None of the four demonstrated games is a PlayStation-exclusive release, so the experiment has not yet shown a current PS5 exclusive operating on Xbox.
How the Xbox port works
Developer Mode is required
PS5X runs in Xbox Developer Mode, Microsoft’s official environment for software development and testing. Switching an Xbox into that mode is not the same as installing a normal store application, and the reports do not establish a public, one-click PS5X package for ordinary console owners.
Vulkan must be translated to DirectX
KytyPS5 uses the Vulkan graphics API on PC. Xbox does not provide native Vulkan support, so PS5X has to translate the emulator’s graphics work to Microsoft’s DirectX API. Uenal specifically identified that translation as a central obstacle: improvements made to the PC version cannot simply be copied to the Xbox build.

- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
That extra layer can affect rendering accuracy, shader compilation, frame pacing and input response. It also means that a game that works on a PC build of KytyPS5 is not automatically expected to work on Xbox.
How well do the games run?
The available observations are demonstrations, not an independent benchmark or a promise of consistent performance. VideoCardz described Quake II footage at roughly 25–45 FPS. SlashGear reported that frame rates sometimes dropped below 20 FPS and that input latency was noticeable in the demonstrations.
- Frame rate: Quake II was observed around 25–45 FPS in the cited footage, with broader reports of occasional dips below 20 FPS.
- Input: All four reported builds recognized Xbox controller input, but noticeable latency was reported.
- Audio: Some titles had working sound; the reports did not specify every game’s audio status.
- Reliability: Booting a build is not evidence of stable progression, save reliability or completion.
No verified compatibility percentage, count of fully playable games, or independent test suite has been published. Results can change as the port and individual game profiles are updated.

Is PS5 emulation on Xbox available to everyone yet?
Not in the practical sense most players mean. The evidence establishes a developer demonstration, not a finished consumer product. It does not establish a broadly downloadable release, a supported installation guide, a complete compatibility list, or reliable performance across the PS5 catalogue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKytyPS5’s own project description characterizes the emulator as early-stage and warns users to expect limited compatibility, crashes, graphical glitches and poor performance. Those limitations apply before considering the additional Vulkan-to-DirectX work required on Xbox.
What files are legal to use?
The underlying project says it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software and instructs users to use only game files obtained legally. A PS5X demonstration therefore should not be interpreted as permission to download commercial game packages, firmware or encryption keys from unlicensed sources. Ownership and local law determine what copying or emulation is permitted; the project’s stated policy is to avoid distributing copyrighted material.

What this means for Xbox owners
If you are curious about the technology
PS5X is a notable proof of concept because it brings a demanding, different-console emulator to Series X hardware and tackles a graphics API mismatch. It is useful evidence that selected PS5 code can execute under the right conditions, not evidence that Xbox has gained official PS5 support.
If you want to play PS5 games
Do not buy an Xbox Series X expecting PS5 compatibility. The demonstrations require Developer Mode and software and game files whose public, consumer-ready distribution has not been established. For dependable access to a PS5 title, use the platform for which that title is officially released.
What to watch in future updates
Future reports will be easier to judge if they distinguish a game reaching a menu from one that runs in-game or can be completed. Useful details include:
Best Value
- Whether a build reaches the menu, enters gameplay and remains playable to completion.
- Frame-rate stability and frame pacing, not just a short peak figure.
- Graphics accuracy, shader or texture failures and crashes.
- Audio output and Xbox controller behavior.
- Any required firmware, keys or other system components.
- Whether the build is publicly downloadable and under what license.
- Whether the title is a PlayStation exclusive or a multiplatform game.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Xbox Series X officially play PS5 games?
No. PS5X is an experimental emulator port running in Developer Mode, not an official Xbox backward-compatibility feature.
How many PS5 games have been demonstrated on PS5X?
Four builds have been publicly reported booting: GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion and Quake II.
Does PS5X run PS5 exclusives?
The reported demonstrations involved multiplatform games. A menu listing additional titles is not evidence that those games run.
What performance should I expect?
Reported results are inconsistent: Quake II footage was around 25–45 FPS, while another report noted dips below 20 FPS and noticeable input latency.
Do I need Xbox Developer Mode?
Yes. The reported port runs in Xbox Developer Mode, rather than the standard retail environment.
