Modder finishes nine-year Xbox 360 voltage-glitch mod with a roughly $4 (£5) Pico

A nine-year Xbox 360 Reset Glitch Hack (RGH) project finally worked in 2026 after a Raspberry Pi Pico replaced the failed 2017 programmer setup. The Pico did not crack Microsoft’s cryptographic key or replace the glitch chip: it made NAND and JTAG work fast and precise enough for the existing hardware method.

What changed between 2017 and 2026

Kennedn began the project in 2017 with a Matrix CoolRunner Rev D glitch chip and an attempted DIY LPT-port NAND/JTAG programmer. The programmer failed, and a NAND dump was expected to take more than 30 minutes, so the console was put aside.

When the same console and chip were revisited in 2026, a Raspberry Pi Pico running PicoFlasher dumped the NAND in a handful of seconds. A second Pico setup, using pico-dirtyJTAG and urjtag, programmed the CoolRunner with Octal450 timing files. The hardware exploit itself was not newly discovered; the inexpensive tooling removed the bottleneck that had stopped the original attempt.

The Pico was released at £5 by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in 2021. The often-quoted “$4” figure is an approximate conversion of that historical price, not a current worldwide retail price. The October 8, 2026 project report does not establish today’s price, stock or affiliate availability.

Kennedn summarized the turnaround this way: “And I have seen this first hand, a project that defeated me in 2017 was made trivial in 2026 by a £5 microcontroller.”

What the Xbox 360 voltage glitch actually does

RGH is a physical fault-injection attack against the console’s boot process. The Xbox 360’s first-stage bootloader, known as 1BL, is embedded in the CPU and checks the Microsoft signature on the next boot stage. That verification assumes the processor is operating under stable electrical conditions.

A glitcher briefly toggles the CPU reset signal at a carefully selected point in the check. The aim is not to calculate or steal Microsoft’s signing key. Instead, the disturbance can make one instruction execute incorrectly. The documented attack targets the mr register-move instruction, allowing an unintended value to enter the comparison path used during signature verification.

  • 【Build Project in Tiny Size】Only 2.1cm*5.1cm ( as small as your thumb). Pico has been designed to use either soldered 0.1" pin-headers or can be used as a surface-mountable 'module'.

The project report describes a pulse of about 100 nanoseconds. ConsoleMods describes typical RGH reset-pulse timing as roughly 100–200 nanoseconds, with the useful window changing by motherboard and method. At that scale, a few nanoseconds can separate a boot from a failed attempt.

Why the Pico made the old setup practical

The RP2040 microcontroller in the Pico has programmable I/O (PIO) blocks clocked at 133 MHz. In the project’s calculation, that provides an effective timing step of approximately 7.5 nanoseconds. This precision is useful for two different jobs:

  • NAND work: PicoFlasher reads the console’s NAND quickly, replacing the failed LPT workflow and its projected 30-plus-minute dump.
  • JTAG programming: pico-dirtyJTAG programs the Matrix CoolRunner’s timing files; urjtag is used in that programming workflow.

The distinction matters: the Pico is a programmer and timing tool in this build. The Matrix CoolRunner remains the separate glitcher/modchip that generates the reset disturbance.

Can a £5 Pico by itself mod an Xbox 360?

Not in the configuration documented by Kennedn. A Pico can handle the NAND and JTAG tooling, but an RGH installation still requires a compatible console, board-specific wiring and either a glitch chip such as the CoolRunner or a chipless method such as RGH3. The console must be opened and soldered.

Part of the job Documented hardware or method Purpose
NAND reading Raspberry Pi Pico with PicoFlasher Creates a fast backup and working image of the console NAND
Glitch-chip programming Raspberry Pi Pico with pico-dirtyJTAG and urjtag Loads timing files into the Matrix CoolRunner
Runtime fault injection Matrix CoolRunner in the reported build Produces the precisely timed reset pulse
Chipless alternative RGH3 Uses the southbridge SMC rather than a separate glitch chip

How a Pico-based RGH installation is organized

The exact solder points, wiring length and timing values depend on the motherboard. A safe overview of the documented workflow is:

  1. Identify the board first. Determine whether the console is a compatible Xenon, Zephyr, other phat board, Slim or E model. Do not choose a timing file before the motherboard is known.
  2. Open the console and prepare the wiring. RGH is physical-access work. The installer must expose the board, attach wires to designated points and protect the board from shorts and lifted pads.
  3. Back up the NAND. Connect the Pico and use PicoFlasher to read the NAND. The reported setup completed this in seconds rather than the failed LPT process’s expected 30-plus minutes. Keep verified backups before making changes.
  4. Program the glitch hardware. Use pico-dirtyJTAG with urjtag to load the appropriate Octal450 timing files into the CoolRunner, if that is the chosen method.
  5. Install and tune for the board. Connect the programmed glitcher and configure timing for the specific motherboard. The useful pulse window is measured in tens of nanoseconds, not milliseconds.
  6. Test cautiously. Inconsistent boots, no video or a non-starting console indicate a wiring, image or timing problem. Stop rather than repeatedly powering a board with a suspected short; inexperienced soldering can permanently brick the machine.

These steps are an architecture of the process, not a universal wiring diagram. Board revisions and RGH variants require their own current diagrams and timing guidance.

Which Xbox 360 motherboards and RGH methods fit?

RGH is not one universal installation. ConsoleMods separates the main approaches as follows:

Method Compatibility guidance Important limitation or characteristic
RGH1 Older phat dashboards Original method for the older dashboard and board combinations it supports
RGH2 Slim and some phat systems Board and dashboard selection still matters
RGH1.2 Phat consoles where reliable boots are the priority Often preferred over RGH3 on problematic phat systems
EXT_CLK Some Xenon and Zephyr boards Applies only to the boards for which the method is documented
RGH3 Generally best on Slim and E systems Chipless, but phat consoles can boot slowly or inconsistently because of timing and SMC limits
Winchester Excluded from the standard RGH compatibility list Do not assume a standard RGH procedure applies

For a phat console with unreliable RGH3 behavior, ConsoleMods recommends considering RGH1.2. The motherboard identification step is therefore more important than the price of the microcontroller.

Do you have to open and solder the console?

Yes. The documented hardware route requires opening the Xbox 360 and soldering to board points. It is not a USB-only software modification, and the Pico does not remove the need for electrical connections. ConsoleMods warns that inexperienced installation can brick the console. Use proper ESD precautions, inspect every joint for bridges and preserve the original NAND before experimenting.

What the project means in 2026

The timing of the success is notable because a software-only Xbox360PeerPressure exploit appeared the week before the hardware project was completed. That development may make a bespoke RGH installation less attractive for some owners, but it does not erase the engineering lesson: the exploit knowledge existed in 2017, while affordable, accurate tooling made the old setup practical in 2026.

The result is best understood as a case study in tooling and fault injection. A roughly £5 Pico can dramatically shorten NAND and JTAG work, but it is not a magic Xbox unlocker. The console still needs a compatible motherboard, model-specific electrical work, carefully selected timing and a willingness to accept real brick risk.
