Mobile Legends: Adventure (MLA) has five consistently documented hero roles: Tank, Support, Mage, Marksman and Fighter. Tanks absorb punishment, Supports heal or enhance allies, Mages deal magic damage, Marksmen deliver sustained ranged physical damage, and Fighters combine melee offense with durability. Since combat is automated, choosing a role, assigning a position and combining complementary abilities before the fight are more important than issuing commands during it.
This guide explains what each class does, how the roles differ from faction and equipment type, and how to assemble a formation that can survive different enemy lineups.

The five Mobile Legends: Adventure roles at a glance
The Mobile Legends: Adventure Class and Heroes pages describe five core roles. A hero’s role identifies the job it normally performs in a team; it does not tell you the hero’s faction, equipment size or every effect in its skill kit.

These are team functions rather than a strict power ranking. A highly upgraded Support can be more valuable than a second damage dealer, and a Fighter may be the correct frontline choice when an enemy can bypass a conventional Tank.

What each hero class does
Tanks: the formation’s damage buffer
Tanks are built to take attacks that would quickly defeat less durable heroes. Their value comes from buying time: while a Tank occupies the enemy’s attention, allies can complete attacks, cast ultimates or build whatever resources their skills require. Tank abilities commonly include taunts, damage reduction, shields, disruption or crowd control, although the exact package differs by hero.
Place a Tank in the front row as a default. This lets it meet incoming attacks before fragile backliners do. The rule is not absolute: check the enemy’s targeting pattern and the Tank’s own skills. If a hero protects an adjacent ally, put that ally in the intended adjacent slot; if the opposing team attacks a particular column, shift the Tank to intercept it.
A Tank does not have to top the damage chart. Judge one by survival time, the attacks it prevents, the control it provides and whether its protection lets your damage dealers keep attacking. Upgrading defensive equipment and survival skills can therefore improve the whole formation even when the Tank’s personal damage barely changes.
Supports: healing, buffs and control
Supports improve the performance and survival of other heroes. Their toolkits may heal, apply shields, increase allied damage or speed, remove harmful effects, reduce enemy output or disable opponents with crowd control. A Support’s contribution is often indirect: the team wins because allies live longer or reach key skill casts sooner.
Most Supports belong in the backline, where they are safer and can repeatedly apply their effects. Move one forward only when its durability, range or passive requires it. Read the skill descriptions for conditions such as “lowest-health ally,” “front-row ally” or “adjacent targets,” then position around those conditions rather than placing every Support in the same slot.

Do not evaluate a Support only by visible healing. A shield that blocks a lethal hit, a cleanse that removes a stun or a buff that multiplies a Marksman’s sustained attacks may be worth more than raw recovery numbers. Supports also compete with damage dealers for a team slot, so select effects that answer the stage’s main threat.
Mages: magic damage and area pressure
Mages specialize in magic damage. Many can hit several enemies at once, apply debuffs or deliver a burst of damage when opponents are grouped. They are especially useful when a stage contains multiple targets that must be weakened together, or when physical defenses make a pure physical lineup inefficient.

Mages are usually backline heroes. Protect them from early physical attacks so they have time to cast. Their area skills can make formation placement matter: if an ability strikes a row, column or cluster, arrange the Mage where its pattern reaches the most important targets. Conversely, spread vulnerable heroes when the enemy has its own area attacks.
Mages tend to be less durable than Fighters and Tanks. A Mage that dies before casting may contribute less than a lower-damage hero who survives. Pairing one with a Tank or defensive Support often produces more real damage than stacking additional fragile casters.
Marksmen: sustained ranged physical damage
Marksmen provide repeated physical attacks from a distance. Their damage usually grows over time as they continue firing, making them effective against durable targets and long encounters. They are also good beneficiaries of buffs that increase attack power, speed, critical effects or survivability.

Keep a Marksman in the backline and use the safest available slot. A Tank’s protection and a Support’s defensive effects directly increase the time a Marksman can attack. If an enemy can dive the backline, reserve a control effect, defensive formation slot or secondary frontline hero to prevent the Marksman from being interrupted.
Marksmen are not interchangeable with Mages. Both normally occupy the backline, but a Marksman supplies sustained ranged physical damage while a Mage generally supplies magic damage and area effects. The better choice depends on enemy defenses, target count, faction bonuses and the rest of your roster.
Fighters: durable melee damage dealers
Fighters bridge the gap between Tanks and pure damage dealers. They can enter melee range, deal meaningful physical damage and survive more punishment than a typical Mage or Marksman. Some Fighters pressure the enemy backline; others hold a lane, interrupt attacks or become stronger after taking damage.
A Fighter can occupy the front row when the team needs another body to absorb hits, or a middle position when its skills require a short approach and the Tank should receive the initial focus. Do not assume every Fighter is a substitute Tank: compare health, defensive effects, self-healing and control before assigning the only frontline slot to one.
Fighters are useful when a lineup needs both damage and resilience but has room for only one additional hero. Their compromise is that they normally cannot match a dedicated Tank’s protection or a dedicated Marksman’s sustained output.

Why role matters more in automated combat
MLA is presented as an idle RPG with automated battles. Once a fight begins, you generally cannot manually direct every attack or reposition a hero in response to a spell. The important decisions happen before combat: select the five heroes, place them, upgrade their abilities and create useful interactions between their skills.
This makes a role label a planning shortcut, not a complete strategy. Two heroes marked as Mages may have different ranges, target rules and control effects. Inspect each skill, then ask four questions:
- Who receives the first wave of damage?
- Which enemy must be disabled or defeated first?
- How long does each damage dealer need to stay alive to deliver its value?
- Which ally benefits most from the Support’s heal or buff?
After a failed attempt, change one variable at a time when possible. A different frontline slot, an earlier control effect or a defensive upgrade can reveal whether the problem is positioning, survivability or insufficient damage.
How to build a balanced five-hero team
A balanced team is a starting framework, not a mandatory five-class checklist. Use this process when a stage is unfamiliar:

Begin with at least one Tank or a Fighter that can reliably survive the opening exchange. If the enemy focuses a different lane, place the durable hero where it will actually be attacked.
- Add a primary damage plan. Choose a Marksman for sustained ranged physical damage, a Mage for magic or area damage, or a Fighter when melee pressure is safer than a fragile backliner.
- Cover the damage dealer’s weakness. Add a Support when healing, cleansing, shielding or buffs solve the stage’s main threat. If the team already survives comfortably, another damage source may be more efficient.
- Check damage diversity. Combining physical and magic damage can prevent one defensive profile from blunting the entire lineup. This is a reason to mix a Marksman or Fighter with a Mage, not a requirement to do so in every battle.
- Match abilities. Look for complementary effects such as a Tank holding enemies inside a Mage’s area attack, a Support increasing a Marksman’s attack speed or a Fighter controlling targets while the backline attacks.
- Apply faction bonuses. Faction synergy is a separate comparison axis from role. A slightly less specialised hero may improve the whole team when its faction combination grants a useful bonus.
- Test and adjust. Because the battle is automated, use the result as evidence. If the backline dies first, improve protection or move the threat’s target. If everyone survives but the timer expires, replace utility with damage or improve offensive upgrades.
Where to place tanks, supports and damage dealers
The common opening formation puts durable heroes in front and damage dealers or Supports behind them. Treat that as a baseline and adapt it to enemy targeting, skill range and faction or ability conditions.

Front and back are not interchangeable labels for “defense” and “damage.” A Support may need a particular adjacency, and a Fighter may be strongest when it starts where it can immediately disrupt an enemy caster. Read the placement-related wording in every relevant skill.
Role is not the same as faction, type or equipment size
The Heroes page separates role from other hero attributes. Role describes battlefield function. Faction is the hero’s group and can contribute to team bonuses. Type is another classification used by the game and should not be treated as a synonym for Tank, Support, Mage, Marksman or Fighter. Equipment size describes gear compatibility or scale, not whether a hero protects allies or deals damage.
When comparing two candidates, record all four dimensions. A hero may be the right role but a poor fit for the current faction bonus; another may have a desirable faction combination but duplicate the team’s existing damage profile. This is why role icons alone cannot determine the best five-hero lineup.

Use the table as a diagnostic, not a tier list. The best candidate is the one whose damage profile and survival time match the encounter and whose skills receive the team’s available buffs.
The Assassin question: why some guides list six classes
A secondary, unattributed PDF guide includes Assassin alongside Tank, Fighter, Mage, Marksman and Support. The MLA-specific Class and Heroes pages consistently present five roles and omit Assassin. That conflict may reflect a cross-game taxonomy, a broad guide covering another title or a version-specific classification, but it is not enough to establish Assassin as a confirmed sixth MLA role.
For current team planning, treat Assassin as an unresolved label rather than adding it to the core role list. If a particular in-game hero or version uses the term, evaluate that hero by its actual skills, target behavior and official classification for your version.
Common role-building mistakes and fixes
- Putting every damage dealer in front: Move Mages and Marksmen behind a Tank or durable Fighter unless their skills explicitly require another position.
- Using two Tanks without a damage plan: Keep the extra durability only when the stage’s threat demands it; otherwise replace one slot with a Mage, Marksman or Fighter.
- Ignoring the Support’s target rules: Read whether the heal or buff affects an adjacent, front-row, lowest-health or random ally, then place accordingly.
- Calling a Fighter a Tank automatically: Check whether it can survive sustained focus and whether it actually protects teammates.
- Stacking one damage type blindly: Add a different profile when enemy defenses or the stage’s target pattern make a single type unreliable.
- Changing several upgrades and positions at once: Adjust one or two factors, retry and use the result to identify the real bottleneck.
- Confusing MLA with Mobile Legends: Bang Bang: MLA is the idle RPG with automated combat; Bang Bang is a separate five-on-five MOBA with different role conventions.
How many heroes are available?
A crawl of the MLA Heroes page reported 160 heroes meeting its listed criteria at that time. That number is volatile: new releases, removals, regional availability and page filters can change it. Use the current in-game roster or the latest Heroes page for availability rather than treating 160 as a permanent total.

A practical checklist before pressing battle
- Is at least one hero durable enough to receive the opening attacks?
- Can the chosen damage dealer survive long enough to use its main skill?
- Does the Support’s effect reach the ally who needs it?
- Are the Mage’s area attacks aligned with enemy positions?
- Does the formation include a useful mix of physical and magic damage where appropriate?
- Do faction bonuses and complementary abilities justify the final substitutions?
- Have you adapted the formation to the enemy’s targeting and control effects?
