Mobile ID Wallet Privacy Settings to Review Before Sharing Credentials

Before you approve a mobile-ID request, verify three things in the wallet’s confirmation screen: who is asking, why the transaction needs your identity, and exactly which attributes will be sent. Approve the smallest disclosure that completes the transaction—ideally a proof such as “over 18” rather than your full birth date. Then check what the recipient says it will retain and whether your wallet records, revokes or deletes the presentation.

Wallet privacy is not one switch. It combines the credential’s design, the verifier’s request, the phone’s lock and security updates, and platform controls for activity and personalization. Menu names and available credentials differ by country, wallet version and verifier, so treat the following as a decision process and confirm the labels on your device.

The three checks to make before every presentation

A digital ID is safest when you make an informed, limited decision at the moment of sharing. Do not approve merely because the app or merchant name looks familiar.

Check What to inspect Decision rule
Requester The legal name, domain or in-person organization shown by the wallet, and the service you intentionally opened Stop if the requester is unfamiliar, misspelled, or unrelated to the transaction you started.
Purpose and timing The explanation of why identity verification is needed and whether it appears at the expected point in the process Proceed only when the request matches the transaction. An unexpected prompt is a reason to cancel and restart from the legitimate service.
Attributes The expanded list of fields, such as name, address, document number, birth date or an age threshold Reject unrelated fields. Choose a single-attribute or age-over-threshold proof when the wallet offers one.
Retention and reuse The recipient’s privacy notice and the wallet’s consent wording about storage, onward use and sharing Do not continue if you cannot understand what will be retained or reused, especially for a one-time transaction.
Afterward control Activity history, consent dashboard, credential removal and revocation options Prefer a wallet that lets you review and undo credentials or permissions when the implementation supports it.

Apple’s identity-verification guidance places the request when a user is completing the transaction that requires it and calls for a purpose explanation. That timing is a useful warning sign on any platform: a request that arrives before you have reached the relevant step deserves a pause.

How selective disclosure limits what leaves the wallet

Traditional identity checks often hand over an entire document even though the service needs one fact. Selective disclosure changes the unit of sharing from the document to an attribute. A verifier might receive your name, a driving entitlement or proof that you meet an age threshold without receiving every other field in the credential.

The European Commission describes this model as allowing a user to share only the specific information requested by a service provider without revealing extra information. Its example is age verification: a wallet can prove that you meet a required age without exposing your exact date of birth. Some implementations use cryptographic, zero-knowledge-style proofs so the verifier can validate the fact without seeing the underlying value. Availability depends on the wallet, credential issuer and verifier; a familiar wallet does not guarantee that every service supports it.

Read the attribute list, not the app name

A legitimate business can still request more information than its transaction requires. Expand the details on the approval screen and look for fields that have no clear connection to the stated purpose. Common examples include a full address for a simple age check, a document number for a membership confirmation, or a complete birth date when an age threshold is sufficient.

If the screen offers choices, select the narrowest option that satisfies the service. If it presents only an all-or-nothing document request, ask the organization whether it supports a less revealing method or use another verification route.

What selective disclosure does not guarantee

Selective disclosure reduces the data sent in that presentation; it does not decide what a recipient may infer, retain or combine later. A service can still log that a verification occurred, associate the result with an account, or request another attribute in a future transaction. Read the recipient’s retention notice and keep a record of your own consent where the wallet provides one.

A step-by-step pre-share procedure

  1. Start from the intended service. Open the account, ticket, checkout or government service you mean to use. Do not follow an unsolicited link or approve a wallet prompt that appears while you are doing something unrelated.
  2. Identify the verifier. Check the exact organization name and, for an online request, the domain shown by the wallet or browser. For an in-person request, make sure the terminal or staff member belongs to the organization you chose.
  3. Read the purpose statement. The explanation should connect identity verification to the current transaction. If it is vague, arrives too early, or asks you to continue outside the service you opened, cancel and verify through an official channel.
  4. Expand every requested field. Look beyond the headline “verify identity.” Record whether the request includes name, address, document number, date of birth, nationality, photograph, driving categories or another attribute.
  5. Minimize the disclosure. Turn off optional fields if the interface allows it. Choose an age-over-threshold proof or another single-attribute response instead of a raw value. If no reduced option exists, decide whether the transaction is worth the broader disclosure.
  6. Check the consent and retention wording. Look for storage duration, secondary use, onward sharing and whether the recipient can reuse the result for another purpose. Save a receipt or screenshot only if doing so does not capture sensitive information in an insecure location.
  7. Authenticate locally. Confirm the request with the phone’s passcode or biometric prompt only after the preceding checks. A lock-screen approval is not a substitute for reading the recipient and fields.
  8. Review the record afterward. Open the wallet’s activity, consent or privacy dashboard. Confirm what was presented and remove a credential or permission you no longer need when the wallet supports that action.

EU Digital Identity Wallet privacy controls

The European Commission describes wallets that keep identity cards, driving licences and education credentials on a mobile phone while allowing the holder to control what is shared and with whom. Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 frames the user as the decision-maker: the holder can request, select, combine, store, delete, share and present identity data under their sole control.

Controls the regulation calls for

  • Selective disclosure: present only the required attribute instead of the entire credential.
  • Common dashboard: provide a central, user-friendly view for transparency and control over presentations and consents.
  • User-directed actions: let the holder choose, combine, delete and present data rather than silently forwarding a complete identity record.
  • Traceable consent: make sharing decisions understandable and reviewable.

The Commission’s privacy guidance says digital documents and the transactions in which they are used remain private and that issuers are not informed when documents are shared. That is the stated wallet design, not a reason to skip the approval screen: inspect the verifier and attributes every time, because a service may request a broader set of fields than the transaction needs.

What to verify in a particular EU implementation

National deployments and individual credentials may expose different controls. Check whether the wallet shows a human-readable verifier identity, offers an attribute-by-attribute selection, records a presentation history and provides credential deletion or revocation. If a feature is absent, do not assume the regulation has made it available in that release; confirm the implementation’s documentation or ask the issuing authority.

Google Wallet: separate activity controls from private-ID consent

Google provides controls for how Wallet and payments-service information and activity are used for personalization, measurement and more personalized ads. In supported versions, look under Your data in Wallet, then Manage data from Wallet and payments services. Google says these controls are rolling out gradually, so the labels or availability may differ by account, country and app version.

What those settings change

The dashboard governs Google’s use of Wallet and payments-service activity for the listed purposes. Review each category and disable uses you do not want, then revisit the page after an app or account change because a control can appear later as rollout expands.

What those settings do not change

The personalization dashboard is separate from the immediate consent screen shown when a private ID or pass is presented. Google’s help guidance treats private passes such as IDs differently. Turning off personalization does not automatically narrow the attributes a verifier requests, erase a recipient’s copy, or approve a presentation for you. You must still read the verifier, purpose and field list at the moment of sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a control is missing

If you cannot find Your data in Wallet, update the app and account settings through the normal device channels, then check again later. Because the rollout is gradual, absence of the menu is not evidence that no data-use controls exist; it means the documented control may not yet be enabled for your configuration. Until it appears, use the presentation screen and the recipient’s privacy notice as your primary decision points.

Apple Wallet identity verification

Apple’s design guidance says an app should request Wallet identity verification when the user is completing the process or transaction that requires it. The app should explain the purpose and provide a fallback verification method when Wallet verification is unavailable.

Apple Platform Security documentation describes subset requests for ID data and an encrypted exchange with the identity reader. In practical terms, the approval screen is where you confirm the exact subset and recipient. An app name alone is not enough: expand the request, reject fields unrelated to the transaction and use the fallback only when you understand what information that alternative requires.

If verification fails or the reader is unavailable

  • Confirm that you initiated the transaction in the intended app or service.
  • Read the fallback method before choosing it; it may require a different set of fields or a physical document.
  • Do not email or photograph a complete ID merely because a wallet reader failed.
  • Try again through the service’s official flow after checking connectivity and the device lock state.

Privacy dashboards, history and revocation

A dashboard is useful only if it answers three questions: what was shared, with whom, and what can you do now. Look for a presentation or consent history that records the verifier and date, a list of stored credentials and permissions, and controls to delete, revoke or reset them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deletion inside a wallet normally affects the wallet copy or its permission; it does not necessarily erase information a relying party already received. The recipient’s retention policy determines what happens on its systems. If a transaction is sensitive, use the recipient’s privacy contact or account controls to request access or deletion where applicable, and keep the transaction reference needed to identify the request.

EU rules call for a common dashboard for transparency and control. Other wallets may expose only part of that model, and the exact history, export and revocation behavior is implementation-specific. Treat “no history shown” as a limitation to factor into your choice, not as proof that no presentation was logged anywhere.

Protect the device that holds the credentials

Wallet controls cannot compensate for an unlocked or compromised phone. Use a strong device passcode, enable the platform’s biometric lock if it suits your threat model, install current security updates and keep account-recovery methods protected. Do not disclose a passcode to a verifier or approve a biometric prompt that you did not initiate.

Lost or replaced phone

Use the platform’s account and device-recovery process as soon as a phone is lost. Review active sessions, remove the missing device where the account supports it, and contact credential issuers to ask whether a credential can be suspended or reissued. The available sequence differs by wallet and issuer; the sources do not establish one universal recovery path.

Shared or borrowed devices

Do not enroll an identity credential on a phone that another person controls. If you must use a shared device temporarily, remove the credential afterward and review the wallet’s history and account sessions from a trusted device.

How to compare mobile ID wallets

Use the following axes when choosing between implementations. EU regulation and Commission guidance directly support the first three; the remaining capabilities must be verified for the particular wallet, credential and jurisdiction.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Evidence to look for
Attribute-level disclosure Can you send one attribute or an age proof instead of a full credential? An expandable field list and a selectable, cryptographic proof option.
Recipient and purpose clarity Does the approval screen identify the verifier and explain why the request is needed? Human-readable organization details, transaction context and a purpose statement.
Consent visibility Can you review presentations and data-use choices later? A common or clearly labeled privacy dashboard and activity history.
Delete and revoke Can you remove credentials, reset permissions or revoke a presentation? Explicit controls, with a statement of what deletion affects.
Device protection and recovery What happens after loss, theft, compromise or a phone change? Passcode and biometric requirements plus documented account and credential recovery.
Verifier coverage Will the services you use accept this credential, online and offline? Current issuer and verifier support for your country and credential type.
Retention and secondary use Does the recipient explain storage, reuse and onward sharing? A readable notice presented before approval and a contact for later requests.

A wallet can perform well on selective disclosure yet still be inconvenient if the services you need cannot verify it. Conversely, broad verifier coverage is not a privacy advantage when every request demands a full document. Weigh the actual fields, controls and recovery path you will encounter.

Common warning signs and what to do

The request asks for more than the transaction needs

Cancel, reopen the service and ask whether it supports an age proof or another reduced disclosure. If the recipient insists on unrelated fields, decide whether to proceed only after reading its retention and reuse terms.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The requester is unfamiliar or the domain is wrong

Decline the presentation. Navigate to the organization through a known bookmark or its official app, then start a new request. Never “test” an unknown prompt by approving it.

The prompt appears unexpectedly

Close it and check which app is active. Resume verification only from the transaction that needs it. Unexpected timing can indicate a mistaken flow, a stale request or an attempt to obtain credentials outside the intended service.

The wallet offers no field details

Do not assume the request is minimal. Look for an information icon, expanded view or a recipient privacy notice. If the wallet still cannot show the attributes, use a different verification method or postpone the transaction.

You approved the wrong request

Open the wallet history, record the verifier and time, remove or revoke the credential or permission if available, and contact the recipient’s privacy channel. Change the account password if you suspect account compromise and review active sessions from a trusted device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why privacy features still have limits

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) treats data minimisation as disclosing only the pieces necessary for the relying party’s processing. It also notes that unlinkability and selective-disclosure architectures create technical complexity and credential-revocation challenges.

In practice, a wallet may need to prove that a credential is valid without revealing an identity, prevent unrelated presentations from being linked, and still learn when an issuer has revoked a credential. Those goals can conflict with offline use, fast verification and fraud prevention. A privacy-preserving design therefore reduces exposure but does not remove the need to inspect every request or understand the recipient’s retention policy.

A compact routine you can remember

  • Who? Confirm the legal requester and the service you started.
  • Why? Match the request to the transaction and its timing.
  • Which? Read every attribute and choose the smallest useful proof.
  • What next? Check retention, review the dashboard and revoke or delete what you no longer need.
  • Is the phone safe? Keep the device locked, updated and recoverable.
