To defend a mobile fintech app from bots, device farms, and automated users, combine controls at the network edge, in the application, and in backend business logic. Start by mapping abuse to each journey—signup, login, recovery, account changes, and money movement—then choose proportionate responses that protect legitimate customers. A bot check inside the app can contribute a signal, but access and financial actions must still be authorized on the server.

What automated abuse can target in a fintech app

“Bot” is not one attack category. OWASP lists credential stuffing, fake account creation, cashing out, card testing, scraping, and automated probing among the threats facing applications. Which threats matter depends on the endpoint and the value an attacker is pursuing; a login endpoint and a public API should not inherit the same generic bot policy. See the OWASP Bot Management and Anti-Automation Cheat Sheet.

  • Account creation: automation can create fake accounts, including to exploit incentives or prepare accounts for later misuse.
  • Authentication and recovery: credential stuffing tests stolen username-password pairs, while recovery flows can be probed or abused to gain access.
  • Account changes: attackers who gain access may change contact, device, or payment details before moving value.
  • Financial actions: repeated funding, transfers, card use, or cash-out attempts may be part of fraud. Treating these as fintech-specific design concerns is an application of OWASP’s broader endpoint-based guidance, not a fintech-specific finding from OWASP.
  • Public and support APIs: automated probing or scraping can expose information or identify weaknesses even when no account login is involved.

Google’s defender guide describes account takeover as a sequence of credential theft, validation, takeover, and fraudulent use. It also discusses automation through mobile-app APIs and social engineering to obtain one-time codes. Use that sequence as a threat model—not as a measured estimate of how often fintech apps are attacked. Google’s guide to account takeover and bot-driven fraud is a vendor-published source.

Map each customer journey to its abuse and impact

Inventory the app’s mobile and API journeys before selecting controls. For each endpoint, record the attacker’s objective, the value or access at stake, and the harm a challenge or denial could cause a legitimate customer. This avoids applying a login-focused defense to unrelated activity and makes customer impact part of the design decision.

Journey or endpoint Abuse to consider Design question
Registration Fake account creation Can verification and account-creation velocity controls distinguish suspicious bursts from legitimate onboarding?
Login Credential stuffing and account takeover Can the service limit attempts and assess session or account context without relying only on network address?
Recovery and device enrollment Account takeover or unauthorized enrollment How will the service verify a change when the customer has lost access to an existing authenticator?
Profile or payment changes Preparation for fraudulent use Should a sensitive change require additional verification or a review period?
Funding, transfers, and cash-out Suspicious movement of value Does the action fit the account’s recent activity and transaction context?
Public APIs Scraping and automated probing Which data or operations need quotas, monitoring, or access restrictions?

The signup, login, and public-API examples align with OWASP’s threat mapping; applying the same method to funding and money movement is a design adaptation for fintech flows.

Build controls across three cooperating layers

Edge: reduce obvious high-volume traffic

Use network reputation, IP or autonomous-system filtering, and basic rate controls to reduce clearly abusive traffic before it reaches application services. These signals are shared and can be evaded, so an IP or network flag should not, on its own, determine whether a customer may use an account. Shared networks and changing connectivity can also make network-only rules imprecise.

Application: evaluate sessions, identities, and actions

Apply session-aware limits, identity-bound quotas, behavioral signals, and selective challenges. Where feasible, bind limits to accounts and actions as well as network signals. This is an architectural inference from OWASP’s guidance to use layered controls and model threats by endpoint: it reduces dependence on IP addresses that may represent many customers or change during a session.

Backend and business logic: assess whether the action makes sense

Look for unusual account velocity and transaction patterns, score risk in context, and route uncertain cases for asynchronous review when appropriate. Business logic can consider what the account is doing and whether the requested action fits its context; a client’s apparent automation status alone cannot answer that question. OWASP recommends controls across edge, application, and backend layers rather than reliance on a single measure.

Use graduated responses instead of a single block-or-allow rule

Choose the least disruptive response that manages the risk, escalating when signals or the potential harm justify it. The sequence below is a practical synthesis of OWASP and NIST guidance, not a mandated procedure from either source.

  1. Observe: log relevant signals and establish a baseline for the endpoint, account, and action.
  2. Slow: apply rate limits or increasing waits when activity suggests repeated attempts.
  3. Challenge: ask for additional evidence when the risk warrants it, taking accessibility and completion impact into account.
  4. Step up authentication: require a stronger or additional authentication step for a sensitive or suspicious action.
  5. Restrict or review: hold a risky action, limit its scope, or send it for review when automated approval would create unacceptable risk.

OWASP’s login guidance pairs rate limits with breached-password checks and multifactor authentication; its signup guidance includes contact verification and velocity limits. NIST SP 800-63B describes throttling and additional ways to mitigate account-lockout risk, including bot-detection challenges and adaptive risk techniques. These authentication recommendations support a wider fraud-control system; they are not a complete fraud standard for every consumer fintech product. NIST SP 800-63B, Digital Identity Guidelines.

Make authentication one part of the defense

NIST describes limiting failed authentication attempts according to authenticator requirements, increasing waits after failures, and using adaptive signals such as IP address, geolocation, request timing, and browser metadata. Such signals can inform a decision, but none establishes by itself that a transaction is safe or that a client is a bot.

Physical authenticators and WebAuthn authenticators are among the authentication options covered by NIST. Whether a particular authenticator is useful depends on service support, device compatibility, enrollment, recovery if it is lost, and customer usability. NIST also treats biometrics as probabilistic; under this publication’s requirements, biometric use must be part of multifactor authentication with a physical authenticator. A biometric check alone is not a solution to automated abuse.

Keep security decisions on the server

Assume client-side checks can be bypassed. The app can collect signals or add friction, but the server should verify authentication, authorize the requested action, enforce limits, and decide whether money movement is permitted. A successful in-app bot check must not become a substitute for server-side authorization.

This principle is stated in the OWASP Mobile Application Security Cheat Sheet, which says authentication and authorization should be performed server-side and client-side controls should be assumed bypassable.

Protect legitimate customers, accessibility, and privacy

OWASP cautions against trying to block every bot: search crawlers, monitoring agents, and accessibility tools may be legitimate. Its stated objective is to raise the cost of abusive automation while keeping legitimate users and bots unaffected. A defense that blocks too broadly can disrupt customers, including people using assistive technology or shared networks.

Device and behavioral signals can help assess risk, but collecting more data is not automatically better. OWASP flags privacy violations from over-collecting fingerprinting data. Define what each signal is for, limit collection to what is needed for that purpose, and assess both customer impact and the way a signal can be evaded or misread. CAPTCHA is one possible challenge, not a universal answer: consider accessibility, customer completion, attacker adaptation, and data collection when choosing an intervention.

Review bot defense as part of mobile app security

Anti-automation controls cannot compensate for weak session handling, exposed credentials, or unsafe communication between the app and its services. Review them alongside OWASP’s Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS), whose control groups cover authentication and authorization, platform interaction, resilience, privacy, secure storage, cryptography, network security, and code practices. OWASP points to the Mobile Application Security Testing Guide (MASTG) for testing and the Mobile Application Security Weakness Enumeration (MASWE) for weaknesses. OWASP MASVS.

Measure whether the controls are working

Evaluate a defense against both abuse and the cost imposed on legitimate users. For each endpoint, track relevant outcomes such as suspicious activity identified, challenges completed or abandoned, legitimate actions denied or delayed, and cases sent to review. Compare these measures across the affected flows and adjust thresholds when they create unnecessary friction or fail to manage the risk. Do not treat a single “bot” score as proof of fraud.

  • Coverage: Does each control address a defined attack and endpoint?
  • Context: Does the decision account for the account, session, device, and transaction where appropriate?
  • Customer impact: What is the cost of a false challenge, delay, or denial for this action?
  • Privacy and access: Are the signals and challenges proportionate and usable, including for customers relying on accessibility tools?
  • Operations: Can the team tune rules, investigate alerts, and review uncertain cases in a timely way?

No directly applicable mobile-fintech-specific prevalence statistic is established by the cited material. OWASP’s anti-automation guidance addresses applications broadly, and NIST’s publication concerns digital identity and authentication; neither should be presented as a measured estimate of bot activity across fintech apps.
