Australia’s mobile driver licences are state- and territory-issued credentials, not one national licence or a general-purpose digital identity account. Four jurisdictions are listed as currently offering a digital driver licence service, but whether you can use one depends on the agency or business checking it and how it asks you to present it. New national standards are intended to make digital credentials easier to verify across borders; they do not, by themselves, make every licence acceptable everywhere.
What a mobile driver licence is—and what it is not
A mobile driver licence (mDL) is the digital form of a driver licence issued and governed by a jurisdiction. That jurisdiction remains responsible for the licence; national work is focused on common ways to verify digital credentials, rather than replacing state and territory issuers with a single national licence.

A digital identity account has a different purpose. For example, the Commonwealth’s myID can use licence information as part of identity proofing, while an mDL is a licence credential that can be presented to a verifier. A licence used to strengthen an identity account is not necessarily being presented as a digital licence at a counter, venue or roadside stop.
Where digital driver licences are currently offered
As of 7 October 2026, the Australian Passport Office lists these four jurisdictions as offering a digital driver licence service:

The listing does not establish a common set of acceptance rules, app features or eligibility conditions across those services. The sources available do not provide a complete jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction account of police, venue or private-sector acceptance, so it would be unsafe to infer that a digital licence will work for every check simply because a jurisdiction offers one.
What national standards are meant to change
On 21 June 2024, the Commonwealth, states and territories agreed to use ISO 18013 and ISO 23220 for verifiable digital credentials that need cross-border verification, with the mDL as the first application. Austroads says it has been working with jurisdictions towards new mobile driver licences in 2026.
Austroads’ Digital Trust Service is part of this harmonisation effort: it is verification infrastructure, not a consumer app and not a national licence issuer. Its purpose sits alongside the credentials issued by jurisdictions. Common standards can help a verifier establish that a digital credential is genuine and current, including across borders, without transferring responsibility for issuing the licence to the Commonwealth.

Austroads’ 2023 harmonisation roadmap also identifies the questions the technology must answer: whether credentials work across regulators, enforcement agencies and relying parties; how holders control disclosure; how a verifier can confirm in real time that a licence remains current; and how a licence may be used as identity evidence. The report notes that transport agencies have only marginal control over some critical digital-identity design choices, making governance and the way people are represented in the system as important as app features.
Acceptance depends on the check being performed
A useful example is passport service. The Australian Passport Office accepts an Australian digital driver licence for passport applications and collections when the holder displays it on a smartphone for visual checking. It does not accept a screenshot or an offline version for that purpose. A physical licence remains accepted.
This is a specific agency’s rule for a specific task, not evidence that other agencies or businesses follow the same process. Before relying on an mDL, check the recipient’s current instructions and whether it requires an on-screen display, a scan or another verification method. Keep a physical licence available when the recipient’s rules or the circumstances require it.

What the NSW upgrade pilot demonstrates about privacy
In September 2026, New South Wales began a staged pilot of an upgraded Digital Driver Licence with selected Western Sydney and Blue Mountains residents, ahead of a planned wider rollout. The pilot supports QR-code-based requests for licence information: a holder can accept or decline the request, and only the information approved by the holder is shared. The state says a verifier can use the Service NSW app.

Service NSW also distinguishes the upgraded driver licence from NSW Digital ID. The NSW Government’s 30 September 2026 release said the individual selects what to share, rather than following the current practice of sharing too many personal details.
The same release said more than 19,000 Western Sydney and Blue Mountains residents had signed up to be ready to use the upgrade. That is a signup figure, not a count of confirmed active users. The state also said its $11.5 million investment in digital identity enhancements that year includes the upgrade pilot.

Can an mDL prove you are over 18 without showing your birth date?
Selective age disclosure is a key potential benefit, but it should not be confused with a feature already available everywhere. Service NSW describes privacy-first features such as proving over-18 status without revealing date of birth, address or other details as planned over time.
Separately, the Australian Government’s Age Assurance Technology Trial describes an mDL model in which the holder consents to share a digitally signed age claim, such as “Over 18,” through a mobile wallet. A verifier can receive a match or no-match result without receiving the holder’s date of birth. That is an official trial model; it is not evidence that every Australian venue currently accepts this method.

How a licence connects to Commonwealth myID
myID’s driver-licence photo check is a separate identity-proofing use. It checks a person’s photo and can help strengthen their myID when used with other documents; it does not mean the person has presented an mDL to a venue or enforcement officer.
As of myID’s 24 August 2026 update, Western Australian driver-licence holders could use the photo-verification feature. myID said expansion depended on state and territory participation in the National Driver Licence Facial Recognition Solution. A June 2026 IDMatch update reported that South Australia and Victoria had signed agreements to participate and were doing technical connection work; other jurisdictions were still considering arrangements.
Commonwealth Digital ID figures illustrate the wider identity system, but they are not measures of mDL uptake. In a 4 December 2025 update, the Australian Government Digital ID System reported 80 million identity-verified transactions in the prior year and 15 million Digital IDs accessing 246 online government services. The same update described 2.2 million Western Australian driver licence and learner’s permit holders as the population in a progressive Strong Digital ID rollout—not as completed enrolments.

What to check before relying on your digital licence
- Confirm the recipient’s rule. Ask whether it accepts an mDL for this particular transaction and which jurisdiction’s credential it supports.
- Use the requested presentation method. A live screen, QR request and screenshot are not interchangeable; for passport services, screenshots and offline versions are not accepted.
- Review the information request. If the service offers consent-based sharing, check which fields it asks for before approving disclosure.
- Keep a fallback. A physical licence remains accepted for passport services, and the recipient may require another form of ID in other situations.
