Conventional motion-triggered lights can switch off when you stop moving, even though you are still in the room. mmWave presence sensors are designed to detect smaller movements and keep an occupied state active, which can prevent that abrupt blackout—provided the sensor and lighting automation are configured to work together.
Why motion-sensor lights turn off while you are still there
A motion sensor answers a narrow question: has it detected movement recently? In a typical automation, detected motion turns the lights on, then a timer turns them off after no new motion arrives. Sitting at a desk, reading, or watching TV can leave you too still to keep that timer resetting.

Presence sensing aims to answer a different question: is someone still in the space? Aqara describes its FP2 mmWave sensor as detecting very slight movement, including a person sitting or sleeping, while contrasting that approach with PIR motion sensing. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent head-to-head test or a guarantee against missed detections.

It is designed to detect small movements that a conventional motion-triggered setup may not register. “Still” does not mean literally motionless: breathing and subtle shifts can provide movement for a presence sensor to detect. The practical distinction is that the automation can continue treating the room as occupied even when you are not walking around.

Its minimalist design blends seamlessly into any modern interior, delivering powerful functionality without visual clutter.
Aqara’s FP2 product page describes using configured room zones to trigger corresponding lights when presence is detected in an area. The sensor alone does not keep a lamp on: you must configure its detection and create an automation that turns the relevant lights on when the space becomes occupied and leaves them on until the sensor reports absence. Check the behavior of the complete automation, including its off delay, rather than assuming that a radar sensor automatically overrides existing timers.
What to check before choosing a presence sensor
- Stationary detection and absence behavior: Look for documentation about subtle movement, sensitivity, and how long the sensor waits before confirming absence. Aqara’s FP400 documentation describes sensitivity and an absence confirmation period; those documented controls are specific to the FP400, not a promise that every mmWave model offers the same options.
- Power: The FP2 must remain powered, according to Aqara. That is a model-specific requirement; do not assume every mmWave sensor uses the same power arrangement.
- Smart-home compatibility: Aqara lists HomeKit, Home Assistant, Alexa, and Google Home support for the FP2. Home Assistant documents adding it through its Aqara integration, including direct addition via HomeKit Controller. Setup options and behavior can depend on the platform and the current integration, so confirm that your specific controller can receive the occupancy state and operate your lights.
- Zones and people sharing a room: If you need separate lighting by area or reliable tracking when multiple people are close together, check the model’s limitations. Aqara’s FP400 documentation warns that tracking can be unstable when people are close together; that caveat applies to the FP400 documentation, not automatically to other sensors.
- Configuration effort: Room placement, sensitivity, zones, and the automation’s absence delay can affect whether lights stay on as expected. Prefer a setup you can adjust and test in the room where you plan to use it.
A practical way to set up lights that stay on
- Confirm the platform path. Check the sensor maker’s compatibility information and your smart-home platform’s integration documentation. Aqara lists supported ecosystems for the FP2, and Home Assistant explains its Aqara integration at Home Assistant’s Aqara integration page.
- Install and configure the sensor. Follow the model’s own instructions for placement and detection settings. If it offers zones or an absence confirmation period, configure them for the room and use case; available settings vary by model.
- Create the lighting automation. Use presence in the relevant room or zone as the on condition, and use confirmed absence—not simply a short period without motion—as the off condition where your platform permits it.
- Test ordinary still activities. Sit where you usually read, work, or watch TV, and observe whether the occupancy state remains active and the lights stay on. Then leave the room and check that the lights turn off after the intended absence delay.
What the example proves—and what it does not
The Aqara FP2 is one example of a mmWave presence sensor with zone-based lighting automation, named smart-home ecosystem support, and a continuous-power requirement. Aqara’s product page is the appropriate place to check its current specifications: Aqara Presence Sensor FP2. Its user manual also documents model-specific settings: Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 User Manual.

There is no independently established comparative performance figure here for mmWave versus PIR in home lighting, so a percentage improvement or a universal reliability promise would be misleading. The practical case is narrower: presence sensing is meant to handle occupants who move too little to keep a motion-based timer active, but results still depend on the sensor, placement, settings, platform, and automation.
