Mivi Targets Indian Smartphone Design and IP, but Its Plans Are Still Ambitions

Mivi has entered the smartphone market with the Mivi One 5G and says its next goal is to develop more design, engineering and intellectual-property capabilities in India. The distinction matters: Mivi’s stated plans do not establish that the phone’s design or IP is already Indian-owned, or that the company qualifies for a government incentive scheme.

What Mivi says it wants to build in India

Mivi Chief Business Officer Himanshu Tandon described a shift from building manufacturing and assembly capacity toward developing the capabilities behind a phone. He identified circuit and printed circuit board (PCB) design, industrial design, and software running on the hardware as areas where India needs stronger IP capability. “The first thing that we need to focus on, when we have created this Indian brand, is to create OEM capabilities, that is design capabilities in India,” he told Fortune India on October 8, 2026.

That is a statement of strategy, not proof of the Mivi One 5G’s design provenance or IP ownership. Mivi has operated in audio for around a decade, and Tandon said the company is trying to carry some of its engineering and R&D capability into smartphones. The company’s About MIVI page, last updated August 19, 2026, describes Hyderabad audio design and manufacturing operations; it is company-provided context about its audio business, not independent evidence about the phone.

The Mivi One 5G is the company’s first phone

Fortune India reported that Mivi launched the Mivi One 5G on September 24, 2026, as its first smartphone. The report said the 4GB RAM/128GB storage variant was scheduled to go on sale on Flipkart on October 8 during the Big Billion Days sale, at an effective ₹11,999 with applicable offers, against a regular starting price of ₹12,999. These are dated launch figures, not a statement of today’s price or continuing availability; check the retailer’s current listing for the live offer and variant. The report named Flipkart as the sale channel, and did not confirm an Amazon listing.

The available reporting does not establish more phone specifications, independent test results, or whether the model’s design and IP are Indian-owned. A local assembly location, by itself, would not answer those questions.

How the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme fits—and what it does not prove

India’s Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) supplies policy context for Mivi’s stated ambitions. The Ministry of Electronics and IT notified the ₹62,500 crore scheme on August 21, 2026, for five years, covering FY 2026–27 through FY 2030–31. The Press Information Bureau describes two segments: TS1 for mobile-phone manufacturing and TS2 for Indian mobile brands.

For TS2, the government release describes a 5% incentive for Indian brands, an additional 3% for Indian design and R&D, and up to 1.5% additional incentive for domestic sourcing of key components or sub-assemblies, subject to the stated localization condition. Those scheme rates describe the policy, not a benefit shown to have been awarded to Mivi.

The PIB says TS2 applicants must meet a minimum FY 2025–26 turnover of ₹1,000 crore. Its conditions for an “Indian Brand” include registration or incorporation in India; IP and trademark held in India; management control with Indian citizens; more than 51% Indian shareholding; and in-house R&D and design capabilities in India. The cited reporting does not establish that Mivi meets these conditions, has applied, or has received support. The scheme’s existence should not be read as evidence of Mivi’s eligibility.

The same government release says 99.2% of mobile phones used in India are made in India. That is a government-reported figure, not an independently verified measure here. It underscores the policy distinction between making phones domestically and building Indian-owned brands, design and IP.

Mivi’s other stated plans

Tandon said Mivi wants to build a brand “from India to the world.” He also outlined several company goals and operational claims:

  • Workforce: a target to expand to around 10,000 people over three years. This is a stated target, not an achieved headcount.
  • Products: plans to integrate AI technologies into future products; no specific product, feature or launch date was established.
  • Sales and customer support: plans to move beyond online sales to retail partners and offline experience centres the following year, and to build customer support.
  • Service network: Tandon said Mivi had enabled more than 500 service centres and was developing pickup and logistics in locations not covered by them. This is a company-reported figure.
  • Memory costs: Tandon expected memory prices might stabilize over six to 12 months, while not expecting an immediate decline. This is a dated executive outlook, not a confirmed price forecast.

These statements indicate the breadth of the company’s ambitions, but they do not demonstrate that the plans have been completed.

What would show that the strategy has moved beyond ambition

For readers assessing Mivi’s progress, the meaningful evidence would be concrete disclosures about which phone components and software are designed in India, who owns the resulting IP, and where relevant R&D is performed. For the policy connection, confirmation of an application, eligibility or an award would be needed. The sources available for this report do not provide those details, a patent record, a product specification sheet, an independent review, or evidence of a scheme application.

That leaves a clear distinction: Mivi has launched a phone and its CBO has described a push toward Indian design and IP capabilities. Whether that push has translated into Indian-owned smartphone design, or into participation in the MPMS, remains unestablished.
