CADR, airflow and room-area ratings describe different things; they are not interchangeable measures. The 60 m² figure does not establish how quickly the E85R will clean a particular room. Room layout, ceiling height, open doorways, pollution levels and the fan setting all matter. For a meaningful comparison with another purifier, compare CADR figures produced under the same test standard and check the assumptions behind each maker’s coverage claim. How does the four-stage filtration work?
The brochure describes four stages: an automatically cleaned pre-filter, a two-layer HEPA filter, an activated carbon filter and a platinum catalyst filter. The latter two are described as washable; the HEPA filter is not reusable after washing.

Pre-filter and automatic dust collection
The pre-filter catches larger dust before air reaches the other filters. A mechanism periodically sweeps collected dust into a dust box, reducing the need to remove and clean the pre-filter by hand. The manual says the automatic cleaning function is intended to reduce performance deterioration from dust clogging; it does not eliminate routine upkeep.
HEPA filter
Mitsubishi’s brochure says the HEPA filter has 3.38 m² of media and captures up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 μm. This is a manufacturer claim with an “up to” qualification, not an independent test result or a promise of identical capture in all operating conditions.

Activated carbon and platinum catalyst
The brochure describes a 500 g activated carbon filter for catching some harmful gases and unpleasant odors. It also identifies a washable platinum catalyst filter. Those descriptions do not establish removal of every gas or odor, nor do they demonstrate a health outcome.

The brochure lists a PM2.5 sensor that detects particles as small as 0.5 μm, an odor sensor and a feature Mitsubishi calls “Smart Search,” in which sensors scan for airborne allergens and pollutants. The manual says the louvre moves through five stages and automatically searches for airborne contamination. These are descriptions of the product’s sensing and airflow features; the published specifications do not independently verify sensor accuracy or cleaning results.

How often do the MA-E85R-A filters need care or replacement?
Routine cleaning
The instruction manual says to clean the dust box when its indicator lights or approximately every four months. It lists sensor cleaning at approximately monthly intervals and gives other periodic cleaning procedures. Follow the manual’s exact directions, including its safety steps for disconnecting power before cleaning.
Filter replacement guidance
The manual says the replace-filter indicator illuminates after approximately eight years in Silent manual operation or approximately 1.6 years in Turbo manual operation. These are approximate manufacturer intervals tied to the stated operating modes; Mitsubishi cautions that service life varies with environment and use. They are not guaranteed replacement dates.

When the HEPA filter needs replacement, the manual directs users to replace the activated carbon filter at the same time. It identifies MAPR-866HFT as the replacement set. The manual also says the HEPA filter cannot be washed and reused. Verify the exact part number and compatibility with the seller or Mitsubishi parts channel for your country before ordering.
Washable pre-filter
Mitsubishi Electric New Zealand’s parts shop lists pre-filter M25274349P for the MA-E85R-A (2022). The listing says to wash it with water only, without detergent, and dry it before reinstalling. Confirm that the 2022 part listing matches your unit and local market.

Is the Mitsubishi E85R discontinued?
Mitsubishi Electric New Zealand labels the MA-E85R-A discontinued. That establishes the product’s status on the New Zealand site, not a global end-of-sale date. Availability can differ by country, so check local Mitsubishi support and sellers for current stock, compatible replacement parts and warranty terms. The New Zealand product page is not evidence of current prices or availability elsewhere.
Who should consider the MA-E85R-A?
Its published 60 m² optimum-area figure and 508 m³/h CADR make it a candidate for readers looking at purifiers for larger spaces, while its automatic pre-filter cleaning may appeal to people who prefer dust collection in a box rather than frequent manual pre-filter washing. The trade-offs to weigh are ongoing replacement of the HEPA and carbon filters together, regular dust-box and sensor care, and uncertain local availability for a model marked discontinued in New Zealand.
This is a review of manufacturer-published specifications and documented upkeep, not a hands-on performance assessment. Mitsubishi’s figures are useful for screening and comparison, but the available documentation does not establish independent room-cleaning performance, comparative noise, current street price or a market-specific warranty.
