Skin, intestinal lining, liver, muscle-supporting connective tissue and other somatic (body) tissues use mitotic division when they make replacement or new cells. Meiosis is restricted to germ-cell lineages in the reproductive organs, where it produces haploid sperm or eggs. Mitosis makes two genetically similar diploid cells; meiosis uses two divisions to make four genetically varied haploid gametes.
The direct answer: tissues use mitosis, not meiosis
When a question says “tissues,” it normally means the ordinary body tissues built from somatic cells. Those cells divide by mitosis when the body grows, replaces worn-out cells or repairs damage. A normal mitotic division produces two daughter cells that retain the parent cell’s chromosome number and are usually genetically very similar to it.

Meiosis has a different assignment. It occurs in germ-cell lineages in the reproductive organs and generates the sex cells, or gametes: sperm and eggs. Meiosis includes two successive divisions after one round of DNA replication. Its four resulting cells are haploid, carrying one set of chromosomes, and are genetically varied. In humans, that means 23 chromosomes rather than the 46 found in most somatic cells.
So the practical rule is simple: body-tissue proliferation is mitotic; gamete production is meiotic. A mature tissue cell may not be dividing at a given moment, and some mature cells may stop dividing altogether, but meiosis does not take over as an alternative way for skin, liver, muscle or nerve tissue to grow.

Which cells are we talking about?
Somatic cells build ordinary tissues
Somatic cells are the cells of the body other than the germ-cell lineage. They make up the layers and structures people usually call tissues: the cells lining the stomach and intestine, cells in the liver, skin cells, connective-tissue cells and many other differentiated cell types. When one of these lineages needs to add cells, its proliferating cells use mitosis.
Mitosis preserves continuity. The parent cell duplicates its DNA, separates the duplicated chromosome sets once, and divides its cytoplasm. The two products normally receive matching chromosome complements. This lets a tissue expand without halving the chromosome number every time a cell divides.
Germ-cell lineages make gametes
Germ cells are the reproductive lineage that ultimately produces sperm or eggs. Their meiotic divisions take place in reproductive organs, not throughout the body’s ordinary tissues. The cells entering meiosis are germ-cell precursors; the sperm or egg produced at the end is a gamete ready to participate in sexual reproduction.

Reproductive organs also contain somatic support and structural cells, which follow the ordinary somatic pattern rather than making gametes by meiosis.
“Uses” does not mean “is always dividing”
Saying that somatic tissues use mitosis describes the division program available to their proliferating cells. It does not mean that every cell is continuously in the middle of mitosis. Cells can spend time carrying out their specialized functions, pause in a nondividing state, or become mature cells that no longer divide. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences notes that some nerve cells and eye-lens cells may not divide again, even though other tissues are continually replacing cells.
Mitosis and meiosis compared
| Feature | Mitosis | Meiosis |
|---|---|---|
| Where it occurs | Proliferating somatic cells in ordinary body tissues | Germ-cell lineages in reproductive organs |
| DNA replication | One replication before the division | One replication followed by two divisions |
| Number of divisions | One | Two successive divisions |
| Typical products | Two daughter cells | Four daughter cells that become haploid gametes |
| Chromosome state in humans | Diploid state maintained; somatic cells generally have 46 chromosomes | Haploid state produced; gametes have 23 chromosomes |
| Genetic relationship of products | Genetically similar to the parent and to one another in the usual case | Genetically varied because homologous chromosomes recombine and assort independently |
| Main biological role | Growth, routine replacement and repair | Sexual reproduction and generation of genetic variation |
The table’s most important contrast is not simply “one division versus two.” It is the purpose of the divisions. Mitosis keeps a tissue’s chromosome complement and cellular identity continuous. Meiosis deliberately changes the chromosome state and creates varied combinations for sexual reproduction.

How a mitotic division supplies new tissue cells
1. DNA is copied before the chromosomes separate
Before either mitosis or meiosis begins, the cell passes through interphase, during which its DNA is replicated. Each chromosome is therefore represented by two matching copies joined together. Replication is preparation; it is not itself the chromosome-separating division.

2. One division separates the copied chromosome sets
During mitosis, the duplicated chromosomes are organized and then separated once. The two sets move to opposite sides of the cell. Each side receives a complete diploid complement rather than a half-set.
3. Cytokinesis creates two cells
The cell then divides its cytoplasm in cytokinesis. The result is normally two daughter cells. Because each has the same chromosome number as the original somatic cell, mitosis can be repeated through a lineage while preserving the tissue’s genetic and chromosome continuity.
Why this arrangement suits tissue maintenance
A replacement cell generally needs the same basic genetic instructions as the cell it replaces. Producing two similar diploid daughters is therefore useful for expanding a tissue during growth and for replenishing cells lost through normal wear. The National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus Genetics summarizes this everyday meaning: “Most of the time when people refer to ‘cell division,’ they mean mitosis, the process of making new body cells.”
How meiosis makes sperm or eggs
1. One replication, then two divisions
Meiosis begins with the same essential preparation: DNA is replicated once during interphase. Unlike mitosis, the cell then undergoes two successive divisions, called meiosis I and meiosis II. There is no second round of DNA replication between those divisions.

3. Meiosis I separates homologs
The first division separates the homologous chromosome pairs. Each resulting cell receives one chromosome from each pair, so the cells are now haploid in chromosome number even though each chromosome still consists of duplicated sister chromatids.
4. Meiosis II separates sister chromatids
The second division separates those sister chromatids. Cytokinesis at the end of the two divisions produces four cells. In the human reproductive pathway, these haploid products develop into gametes: sperm in the male lineage or eggs in the female lineage.
Why meiosis must reduce the chromosome number
If human gametes carried the full 46-chromosome diploid complement, combining a sperm and egg at fertilization would double the chromosome number in every generation. Meiosis instead supplies 23 chromosomes in each gamete. Fertilization combines the two haploid sets and restores the usual 46-chromosome diploid state in the new individual.
The National Human Genome Research Institute’s glossary, updated in 2026, defines meiosis as a cell division that reduces the chromosome number in gametes. Its description of two meiotic divisions yielding four haploid daughter cells captures the defining outcome.
Chromosome numbers in one human life cycle
Chromosome terminology can make the distinction easier to remember:
- Most somatic cells: generally diploid, with 46 chromosomes arranged as two sets.
- Meiotic products: haploid, with 23 chromosomes in a sperm or egg.
- After fertilization: the sperm and egg contribute one 23-chromosome set each, restoring 46 chromosomes in the resulting diploid cell.
“Diploid” and “haploid” describe chromosome-set number, not cell size or whether a cell is specialized. A haploid gamete is not a miniature somatic cell, and a diploid tissue cell is not necessarily dividing. The terms identify how many chromosome sets the cell carries.

What tissue turnover looks like in real organs
Stomach lining: replacement can take only a few days
The stomach lining is exposed to constant chemical and mechanical stress. NIGMS reports that cells in this lining may be replaced after only a few days. That rapid turnover depends on proliferating cells using mitosis to produce new somatic cells that join the lining.
Recommended Free Tools
Liver: replacement may take up to a year
Liver-cell replacement is much slower than stomach-lining replacement. NIGMS gives a timescale of up to a year for liver cells to be replaced. The difference illustrates why “tissues use mitosis” does not imply one universal division rate. Each tissue regulates when and how often its cells enter the cell cycle.
Nerve and eye-lens cells: some may not divide again
Some differentiated nerve cells and eye-lens cells may not undergo another division. Their lack of ongoing division does not turn them into meiotic cells. It means that those mature cells have limited or absent proliferative activity, while other cells in the same broad organ system may supply maintenance or repair.
Turnover is a tissue property, not a choice between two universal modes
A tissue can therefore be fast-turnover, slow-turnover or largely nondividing. The relevant questions are which cell lineage is involved and whether that lineage is actively proliferating. If the cells are ordinary somatic cells that are making more body cells, the division is mitosis. If they are germ-cell precursors making gametes, the division is meiosis.
Why normal skin, liver, muscle and nerve tissue do not use meiosis
Meiosis would be unsuitable for routine tissue maintenance for three linked reasons:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- It cuts the chromosome number from diploid to haploid instead of preserving the tissue’s normal 46-chromosome state.
- It produces four genetically varied products rather than two comparable replacement cells.
- Its specialized recombination and chromosome assortment are designed for sexual reproduction, not for maintaining a stable body tissue.
A skin cell produced for a wound or a liver cell produced during routine replacement needs to remain a somatic cell with the tissue’s chromosome complement. A meiotic product is instead on the path to becoming a sperm or egg. The two processes solve different biological problems and are not interchangeable repair mechanisms.

Common wording traps and how to answer them
“Do tissues use mitosis or meiosis?”
Answer “mitosis” when “tissues” means ordinary body tissues. Add that meiosis occurs in germ-cell lineages in reproductive organs to make gametes.
“Does meiosis happen in normal tissue cells?”
No. Normal somatic cells do not enter meiosis. Germ-cell precursors are a distinct lineage, even when they are located within a reproductive organ that also contains somatic tissue.
“Are all cells in a tissue actively dividing by mitosis?”
No. Some are temporarily nondividing, and some mature nerve or eye-lens cells may not divide again. The statement about mitosis concerns the mechanism used by the tissue’s proliferating cells.
“Are mitotic daughter cells absolutely identical?”
They are described as genetically similar or continuous with the parent in the usual case. Meiosis is the process that deliberately creates broad genetic variation through homolog pairing, crossing over and assortment. “Similar” is therefore more precise than claiming that every molecule in every daughter cell is guaranteed to be identical.
A quick decision guide
| Situation | Division to identify | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A body grows and adds ordinary cells | Mitosis | It makes two diploid daughter cells while preserving chromosome continuity. |
| A worn stomach-lining cell is replaced | Mitosis | The replacement belongs to a somatic tissue lineage. |
| Liver cells are renewed over a long interval | Mitosis | Slow turnover is still somatic proliferation, not meiosis. |
| A sperm or egg is produced | Meiosis | Two divisions make four haploid, genetically varied products. |
| A mature nerve or eye-lens cell remains in place | Neither at that moment | The cell may be nondividing; absence of division is not evidence of meiosis. |
| A sperm and egg unite | Fertilization, not a division type | The two 23-chromosome sets combine to restore 46 chromosomes. |
The concise rule to remember
For human biology, identify the cell’s lineage and its job. Somatic lineage plus growth, replacement or repair equals mitosis. Germ-cell lineage plus sperm or egg production equals meiosis. Mitosis has one division and normally yields two similar diploid cells; meiosis has two divisions and yields four varied haploid gametes. That distinction explains both how tissues are maintained and how sexual reproduction preserves the human chromosome number.
