Mistbury Catacombs is in the Springlands, in the hillside north of the Hill of Scavengers. From the Ancient Vault-Farmer, travel west, skirt the mountain on its western side, then continue north. The dungeon’s puzzle requires four switches: two are reached through the lower and elevated sections near the bridge, one is down the first-left branch, and the last is behind a metal gate on the second-left branch. When all four indicator lights above the main gate are lit, the gate opens to a sarcophagus containing Pikemead’s Bulwark, a unique shield.

Where is Mistbury Catacombs?

Mistbury Catacombs is a Springlands dungeon built into a hillside north of the Hill of Scavengers. The most reliable approach begins at the Ancient Vault-Farmer. Travel west from that landmark, go around the mountain’s western side rather than trying to climb straight over it, and then turn north. The entrance is set into the slope, so look for the man-made opening in the hillside instead of a large freestanding ruin.

This approach matters because the surrounding mountain can make a direct line look shorter on the map while producing steep climbs and dead ends. Reaching the western side first puts you on the practical path toward the northern hillside entrance. Once you find the outer wooden barrier, you have reached the dungeon entrance rather than a separate cave or side room.

What to bring before entering

The puzzle is easier if you prepare for traversal and Shroud exposure, not just combat. Pack the following items before leaving the Springlands settlement or your current base.

  • Lockpicks: Interior metal gates require them. Bring enough for the gates you expect to open, and avoid spending one on the outer wooden barrier unless you have no faster tool available.
  • Axe or pickaxe: Either can break wooden barriers, including the entrance barrier and a wooden door on the first switch route.
  • Explosives: These can destroy the outer wooden barrier if you prefer a destructive entry.
  • Grappling hook: The second and fourth switch routes use elevated platforms and grappling points.
  • Ranged weapon and ammunition: One switch is activated by shooting it from the route’s indicated position. A bow is the straightforward choice, but another suitable ranged weapon can work.
  • Shroud protection: The lower sections expose you to the Shroud. Check your remaining Shroud time and carry any consumables you normally use to extend or restore it.

Put the lockpicks and grappling hook on an easy-to-reach hotbar slot. The route alternates between dropping to lower ledges, climbing to upper platforms and returning to the central chamber, so fumbling through inventory can cost more time than the puzzle itself.

How to get through the entrance and locked doors

Outer wooden barrier

The first barrier is wooden and has three practical solutions:

Method What it does When to choose it
Lockpick Opens the barrier without destroying it. Use only if you have lockpicks to spare; the metal gates inside need them.
Axe or pickaxe Breaks the wooden obstruction directly. Usually the simplest non-consumable option.
Explosives Destroys the barrier from the outside. Useful when you want a quick breach and have explosives available.

Once inside, do not assume every locked-looking door uses the same rule. Wooden doors can be broken with a tool, while the metal gate on the final branch is a lockpick gate. Saving lockpicks at the entrance therefore gives you more flexibility later, where bypassing the metal gate is part of the intended route.

How the four-switch puzzle is laid out

The main chamber and its bridge are the route’s reset point. Return there after each branch, then choose the next branch from the entrance side. Above the final gate, indicator lights show how many switches are active. Use those lights as your progress check: different guides label or number the switches differently, but the dungeon always requires four activated switches.

Branch or position Movement Activation method
Lower route beside the bridge Drop to the lower level, bypass the closed metal gate via an alternate ledge and pass the wooden door. Interact with the switch on the lower path; a ranged shot can activate it from the indicated position.
Elevated platform after the first switch Use the newly opened route and grapple upward. Shoot the visible switch with a bow or other ranged weapon.
First-left branch from the bridge Descend directly to the lower switch area, then retrace the branch. Interact with the third switch at the end of the descent.
Second-left branch from the bridge Open the interior metal gate, climb to the upper platform and grapple across. Interact with the final switch; this one is not activated by shooting.

Fastest route to all four switches

1. Take the lower branch for the first switch

From the main chamber, use the branch that leaves the bridge toward the lower level. Drop down near the closed metal gate. That gate is not the route’s only way forward: move along the alternate ledge instead of trying to force the metal gate immediately. Follow the ledge to the wooden door, then open it with a tool or break it.

The first switch is on the lower path beyond that wooden door. Position yourself where the switch is visible and activate it. The layout permits a ranged activation from the guide’s indicated angle, which avoids an unnecessary detour across the lower floor. After the switch responds, check the indicator lights above the main gate before leaving; one light should be on.

2. Use the opened route and grapple to the second switch

Do not return all the way outside after the first activation. Follow the route that has opened as a result of the first switch. It leads toward an elevated platform. Aim your grappling hook at the available grapple point and pull yourself up.

From the platform, the second switch is visible. Equip your ranged weapon and shoot it rather than searching for a nearby interaction prompt. A successful hit activates the switch. Return to the main chamber and use the lights above the gate to confirm that the second indicator has joined the first.

3. Descend the first-left branch for the third switch

Reorient at the entrance side of the main chamber. Take the first-left branch from the bridge. This branch descends directly toward the third switch, making it the shortest leg once the first two switches have opened their route.

Follow the descent to the switch, activate it, and then retrace the same path back to the bridge. Retracing is faster than looking for a new connection because the branch is designed as a direct out-and-back section. Confirm the third light before starting the final branch.

4. Open the second-left branch and grapple to the fourth switch

From the entrance side of the bridge, take the second-left branch. You will reach an interior metal gate. Use a lockpick here; this is the lock that makes conserving your entrance lockpick worthwhile.

Beyond the gate, climb to the upper platform. Use the grappling hook to cross to the far side, where the fourth and final switch is mounted. Unlike the elevated switch in the previous section, this one is activated by interacting with it. Do not waste ammunition shooting it or leave before the interaction completes.

Return to the main chamber and look at the indicators over the final gate. All four should be lit. If one remains dark, revisit the corresponding branch rather than treating the gate as a general combat door.

Why switch numbering can be confusing

Maps and walkthroughs do not use a universal numbering convention. One guide may call the lower switch number one, while another starts with the branch switch or orders them by visual position. The physical route is consistent: lower branch, elevated ranged switch, first-left descent, then second-left metal-gate branch. Match your progress to the four lights above the gate instead of relying on a guide’s numbers alone.

What to do if the final gate stays closed

A gate that remains shut after the indicators appear lit has been reported by players in a Steam support discussion. The reports are community workarounds, not an official fix, and behavior can vary with the game version. Try these checks in order:

  1. Verify the final interaction. Return to the second-left branch and interact with the fourth switch again. It must be pressed, not shot.
  2. Inspect the indicators. Stand in the main chamber and confirm that all four lights above the gate are genuinely illuminated. A switch that moved or flashed but did not remain active may need to be triggered again.
  3. Leave and return. Exit the catacombs, travel away from the entrance, then come back and check the gate. Some players report that re-entering refreshes the puzzle state.
  4. Restart the game completely. Save if appropriate, exit to the title or desktop, relaunch, and return to Mistbury Catacombs. A full restart is another player-reported workaround when the gate state fails to update.

If the gate still does not open after these steps, record your game version and report the issue through the game’s support channels. The available player reports do not establish a single guaranteed fix for every version, so avoid spending additional lockpicks or explosives on the final gate itself.

Reward behind the gate

When the four-switch state registers correctly, the main gate opens to the final sarcophagus. The unique reward is Pikemead’s Bulwark, a shield. Collect it after confirming the gate has fully opened; the sarcophagus is the endpoint of the switch puzzle rather than a separate route to another dungeon wing.
