NBC News reports that a half-brother Goessling had not known about took a 23andMe DNA test. That test helped the family locate Goessling. In May, Goessling said, he received a letter from his biological parents asking to make contact. The reports do not say that Goessling initiated the DNA search or personally took the test that revealed the relationship.

How did Goessling recognize Michael McDonald?
The birthday meeting with his birth mother
Goessling met his biological mother for lunch on his 58th birthday. NBC News quoted him recalling her response to his suggestion that they meet that day: “Yes, you’ve waited long enough. I’ve waited long enough. Let’s meet on my birthday, 58 years to the day.”
The phone call that revealed his father’s identity
Goessling spoke with McDonald by phone the following day. When Goessling asked what he did for a living, McDonald said he was a musician. Goessling knew McDonald was due to perform in St. Louis, but had not yet connected the name to the Doobie Brothers show. He later recognized McDonald’s voice, telling NBC News: “I just said: ‘What a voice that guy has!’… it just sounded so familiar, but I couldn’t place it.”

Goessling eventually asked, “Are you Michael McDonald?” McDonald replied, as Goessling recounted it to NBC News, “Yeah, I’m afraid so.”
What happened after they connected?
The Independent reports that Goessling and McDonald met in person after their initial contact. NBC News says the extended family gathered the evening before McDonald’s September 4, 2025, St. Louis concert with the Doobie Brothers. Goessling described that gathering to NBC as “one of the greatest events of my life.”

The reunion brought together Goessling’s biological and adoptive families. McDonald praised Goessling’s adoptive parents, telling The Independent, “The real rock stars in this story are his adoptive parents.” Goessling told NBC News of his birth parents, “They were always heroes in my story.”
The Independent also reports that McDonald and Goessling’s birth mother remained friends over the years. The report says McDonald’s 2024 memoir, What a Fool Believes, discusses his career and sobriety.

NBC News and The Independent report that Goessling was adopted as an infant after his biological parents conceived him when they were about 14.
