Missed Jury Duty Call? How to Spot and Verify a Jury Duty Scam

A jury duty scam is an impersonation attempt in which someone posing as a court or law-enforcement official claims you missed jury service and must pay a fine or provide personal information to avoid arrest. Do not pay or share information in response. Stop communicating, then contact the court using a phone number or website you find independently.

How a jury duty scam works

The usual story is that you failed to appear for jury service and now face an outstanding fine, warrant, arrest, or jail. The caller may claim to be a court official, police officer, sheriff, judge, or U.S. Marshal. They may sound convincing, know details such as your name or address, or make the contact seem official with a badge number or case number. Those details do not authenticate the claim.

Scammers may use calls, texts, or emails, sometimes with spoofed caller ID, fake arrest-warrant documents, or a government-style website. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers have also used fake jury websites to request a date of birth, Social Security number, and payment. A seal, official-sounding web address, or document is not proof that the message came from a court. The FTC says real law enforcement will never text or email you an arrest warrant.

Warning signs to recognize

  • Urgency or threats: The person pressures you to act immediately or threatens arrest unless you pay.
  • Payment demands: They request gift cards, cryptocurrency, payment-app transfers, wire transfers, prepaid debit cards, cash, or a deposit at a cryptocurrency kiosk. The FTC states that courts never demand payment over the phone. FTC guidance on jury-duty threats and California Judicial Branch guidance describe these kinds of demands.
  • Requests for sensitive details: They ask for bank or credit-card information, your Social Security number, birth date, or other personal information, either on the call or through a link.
  • Official-looking proof that you cannot verify independently: Caller ID, a badge or case number, a warrant-looking document, or a supplied website can be faked. Do not use contact details supplied by the person to check their own claim.

How to verify a real jury-service concern

Missed-jury-service procedures and consequences depend on the jurisdiction; scam warnings do not establish a single procedure for every court. If you are concerned that you may have a genuine jury matter, find the court’s official website or phone number independently. You can also use contact information on a summons or other court material you have already verified. Ask the jury office or clerk whether action is required.

  • REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
  • 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
  • BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. When a new unwanted number gets through, simply press the large red BLOCK NOW button to prevent repeat calls from that number. Store up to 10,000 additional numbers.
  • SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
  • IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.

For verification, rely on a contact channel you located independently—not the caller ID, a link in a text or email, an attached document, or a phone number or payment instruction supplied by the person who contacted you. The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia’s fake-warrant warning also advises against responding to suspicious payment requests.

What to do if someone contacts you

  1. Do not pay or disclose information. Do not buy a gift card, transfer money, scan a payment code, or provide personal or financial details in response to the contact.
  2. End the interaction. Hang up or stop replying. Do not click the message’s link or follow its payment instructions.
  3. Check independently if needed. Locate the court’s official contact information yourself and ask its jury office or clerk about any real obligation.
  4. Report the attempt. File a report with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The California Judicial Branch also advises contacting local police and the local jury office about suspicious requests.

If you already paid or shared information

Contact the payment provider or your financial institution promptly and explain what happened; ask what steps are available for the specific payment. The FTC’s jury-duty scam alert points victims to further help, but a payment reversal is not guaranteed. If you disclosed sensitive information, tell the relevant financial institution what was exposed and ask what protective steps apply. You can also report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
