Yes. Mint Mobile works in Canada. Mint says every plan includes Canada roaming at no additional cost: unlimited talk and text plus 3 GB of high-speed data each month while you are in Canada. That 3 GB is separate from your normal U.S. plan data. Activate the phone on Mint’s U.S. network before leaving, turn on Data Roaming, and the Canada benefit should start automatically when you cross the border.
What Mint includes when you travel to Canada
Mint’s Canada-specific policy provides a simple roaming benefit rather than a separate travel package. While physically in Canada, an eligible Mint line receives:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Benefit | What Mint’s policy says | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| Talk | Unlimited talk in Canada | You do not pay an additional Canada roaming charge for ordinary voice use covered by the plan. |
| Text | Unlimited text in Canada | Text messaging is included alongside the roaming voice benefit. |
| Data | 3 GB of high-speed data per month | The Canada allowance is distinct from your regular monthly U.S. data allotment. |
| Activation | Automatic after entering Canada | There is no manual roaming pass to activate, but Data Roaming must be enabled on the handset. |
| Price | No additional cost on Mint plans | Mint says you do not need to buy a Canada roaming package for the included allowance. |
Mint announced the benefit for new subscribers beginning July 1, 2024. Existing subscribers received it when their monthly plan data refreshed. The allowance is a plan feature, not an independent speed test or a promise of a particular performance in every Canadian location.
How Canada roaming starts and stops
Activation must happen on Mint’s U.S. network first
Mint’s terms require the device to be activated on the home network before international roaming is used. In practical terms, finish SIM or eSIM activation, make sure the line can place a call or use data in the United States, and only then travel to Canada. A phone that has never completed Mint’s domestic activation may not register correctly on a Canadian partner network.

Turn on Data Roaming
Enable the handset’s Data Roaming setting before or after crossing the border. On an iPhone, the control is generally under Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options. On Android, it is commonly under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs or a similarly named mobile-network menu. Manufacturers and software versions use different labels, so search the Settings app for “roaming” if the control is not in those locations.
Data Roaming is separate from turning cellular data on. A phone can show a Canadian network for calls while still refusing mobile data if roaming is disabled.
The network changes automatically at the border
Mint says the Canada benefit begins automatically when the phone enters Canada and changes back to the regular plan when the customer returns to the United States. You should not need to select a Canadian carrier manually. Border areas can take a few minutes to update, particularly while the handset is moving between towers.

- Confirm the line is active in the United States. Complete Mint activation on its U.S. home network and test a call, text, and cellular data session.
- Check that the handset is compatible and unlocked. Mint’s terms limit eSIM use to compatible, eligible unlocked devices. There is no universal model list in the Canada instructions, so verify your exact phone and SIM or eSIM configuration against Mint’s current eligibility information.
- Install pending operating-system and carrier updates. Updates can affect modem registration and roaming controls. Restart after updating so the cellular profile reloads.
- Record your account and support details. Keep the account login, the Primary Account Holder’s contact information if you use Mint Family, and a way to connect to Wi-Fi if cellular service is delayed.
- Enable Data Roaming when you are ready to use Canadian cellular data. If you prefer to keep roaming data off until arrival, leave it disabled during the U.S. portion of the trip and switch it on after crossing.
These steps do not create a new Canada pass. They simply ensure that the line, device, and setting meet the conditions for the included benefit.
What to do after crossing the border
- Wait for the phone to show a Canadian network or roaming indicator.
- Verify that Data Roaming and cellular data are both enabled.
- Send a test text or place a short call.
- Open a simple webpage or another low-data service to confirm mobile data.
- If registration does not occur, turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, turn it off, and wait for the network to reselect. If that fails, restart the phone.
Mint’s own Canada guidance specifically recommends toggling Airplane Mode or restarting when service does not start. Avoid repeatedly changing network-selection settings unless support directs you to do so; automatic selection is the normal behavior described by Mint.

Understanding the 3 GB Canada allowance
It is separate from your ordinary U.S. data
The Canada allowance is described as “3 GB of high-speed data that only works in Canada.” Mint says it does not pull from your usual monthly data allotment. Using 1 GB in Canada therefore does not reduce the domestic data bucket shown for use in the United States.
“High-speed” has a specific limit
Mint identifies the 3 GB as high-speed data, but the Canada-specific policy does not state what speed applies after the allowance is used, whether data stops, or what an overage would cost. Do not assume a particular reduced speed or an automatic paid overage. If you expect to exceed 3 GB, check the current account terms or ask Mint support before the trip.

Heavy-use activities can consume 3 GB quickly
Three gigabytes can cover ordinary messaging, maps, email, and intermittent browsing, but video streaming, hotspot use, cloud backups, app updates, and long video calls can use data much faster. To stretch the allowance:
- Download maps, playlists, podcasts, and travel documents over Wi-Fi.
- Disable automatic photo backup and app updates while roaming.
- Use Wi-Fi for video calls and streaming when practical.
- Check the phone’s per-app cellular-data screen to identify unusually heavy users.
- Keep hotspot disabled unless you understand how connected devices consume the shared cellular connection.
These are usage-management suggestions, not a promise that any particular app will consume a fixed amount of data.
Coverage, speed, and Canadian destinations
Mint warns that coverage is unavailable in some areas. Canada is geographically large, and a plan feature does not guarantee service in every town, rural road, national park, basement, or border region. Terrain, partner-network availability, congestion, and the phone’s radio bands can all affect the result.

Mint’s Canada material does not publish a universal list of Canadian locations or handset models that are guaranteed to work. Check your destination and exact device against Mint’s latest coverage and eligibility information, especially if you are traveling outside major population centers. Treat the included benefit as access subject to coverage rather than as a nationwide performance guarantee.

Canada travel versus other international trips
| Situation | What the published policy provides | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Short trip to Canada | Unlimited talk and text plus 3 GB of high-speed data per month at no additional cost. | Activate domestically, enable Data Roaming, and let the phone register automatically. |
| Trip to a country other than Canada | Canada’s included benefit does not apply. International eligibility and rates vary by destination. | Check Mint’s current destination tool and international options. A Minternational Pass may be available for eligible destinations outside Canada. |
| Extended or repeated international use | Mint’s terms and Acceptable Use Policy restrict excessive or extended international roaming. | Do not treat the plan as a substitute for a Canadian resident mobile service; review the terms before a long stay. |
Do not buy a Minternational Pass for Canada. Mint explicitly says those passes do not work in Canada and are unnecessary there because Canada roaming is included. Pass eligibility and pricing for other countries can change, so check the current destination-specific information when traveling elsewhere.
Short-term travel is not permission to live abroad
Mint’s terms say the account holder must reside in the United States and that primary use must occur in the United States. The terms and Acceptable Use Policy also allow Mint to restrict or terminate service for excessive roaming or extended international use.
That distinction matters for snowbirds, students, remote workers, and anyone considering a move. A vacation, business trip, or brief visit to Canada fits the ordinary travel use case. Keeping the line in Canada for most of the time, using it as a permanent Canadian number, or routing nearly all usage through Canadian networks can fall outside the stated conditions. If Canada will be your main place of use, obtain written clarification from Mint before relying on the line.
Mint Family accounts and additional data
Mint’s Canada support page says Mint Family members can purchase their own Canada roaming data add-on or request one from the Primary Account Holder. The page does not establish a universal price, an additional fixed allowance, or how an add-on changes the included 3 GB. Treat an add-on as an account-specific option and confirm its current terms before paying.

The included Canada benefit itself does not require a Family add-on. The add-on process is relevant only if a Family member wants whatever extra roaming data Mint currently offers or needs help from the Primary Account Holder to manage it.
Roaming in Canada versus calling Canada from the United States
Mint advertises international calling from the United States to Canada as included. That is a different service from roaming while you are physically in Canada:
- International calling: You remain in the United States and call a Canadian number.
- Canada roaming: Your Mint phone is physically in Canada and connects through a Canadian network.
Having one benefit does not by itself prove the other. Use the Canada roaming rules above when planning an actual border crossing.

No network appears after arrival
- Confirm that the line was activated on Mint’s U.S. network before the trip.
- Turn Airplane Mode on and off, then wait for registration.
- Restart the handset.
- Check that the SIM or eSIM is enabled and that the phone is not locked to another carrier.
- Move outdoors or to a different location if you are in a building, valley, or known low-coverage area.
Calls and texts work, but data does not
- Enable Data Roaming as well as cellular data.
- Make sure the phone has not entered a low-data or data-blocking mode.
- Toggle Airplane Mode or restart once more so the data session is renegotiated.
- Test in another location; coverage can vary even when voice registration succeeds.
Data stops during the trip
First check whether the 3 GB high-speed allowance has been used. Mint’s Canada page does not specify the post-allowance speed, a cutoff rule, or an overage price, so do not infer one from another Mint plan or from a different country’s roaming terms. Use Wi-Fi and contact Mint for the account-specific status and available options.
A Family member cannot add roaming data
The Canada support instructions allow a Family member to purchase an add-on or request one from the Primary Account Holder. Have the Primary Account Holder manage the request if the member lacks permission, then verify the add-on’s current allowance and expiration in the account before relying on it.

The phone works in the United States but not in Canada
Domestic service alone does not establish international eligibility. Recheck that the device is unlocked and compatible with Mint’s roaming arrangement, that Data Roaming is enabled, and that your usage is consistent with the U.S.-residency and primary-use requirements. If all three are satisfied and basic resets fail, Mint support is the appropriate next step.
Who should consider another data option?
For a short Canadian trip with ordinary messaging, navigation, email, and occasional browsing, Mint’s included 3 GB may be sufficient. Travelers who expect continuous hotspot use, frequent streaming, or a stay long enough to exceed the allowance should compare a separate travel-data option only after checking phone compatibility, Canadian coverage, data quantity, price, and whether using another SIM or eSIM affects their Mint line. No particular alternative provider or product is required by Mint’s policy.
A separate option also does not remove Mint’s residency condition. It can supply additional data for a trip, but it does not turn a Mint account into a permanent Canadian service.
Key checks before you cross the border
- Your Mint line completed activation on the U.S. home network.
- Your phone is compatible, eligible, and unlocked for its SIM or eSIM setup.
- Data Roaming is enabled when you need Canadian cellular data.
- You understand the included allowance: unlimited talk and text plus 3 GB of high-speed data per month in Canada.
- You are not buying a Minternational Pass for Canada.
- Your destination has acceptable coverage, with the understanding that Mint lists coverage gaps.
- Your trip is temporary and consistent with Mint’s U.S.-residency and primary-use terms.
With those conditions met, Mint’s published policy supports ordinary travel in Canada without a separate roaming charge. The practical limits are the 3 GB high-speed allowance, local coverage, device eligibility, and Mint’s restrictions on extended international use.
