For diagnosed pattern hair loss, topical minoxidil has stronger and broader support from dermatology guidance than natural remedies. Rosemary oil has one small six-month comparison with 2% minoxidil, but that trial does not show that rosemary is generally equivalent. Because hair loss has many causes, the first useful step is finding out what is causing yours.
Why the cause of hair loss matters
Pattern hair loss is only one possible cause of shedding or thinning. A remedy that may help androgenetic alopecia is not necessarily useful for hair loss caused by another condition or a nutrient deficiency. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends getting a diagnosis and discussing individualized options with a board-certified dermatologist. Minoxidil vs. natural hair loss remedies
| Option | Evidence and population studied | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Topical minoxidil | AAD identifies it as an FDA-approved treatment for male pattern hair loss and reports support from clinical trials. The guidance does not establish that every formulation or use is appropriate for every person. | May reduce loss and stimulate some growth, but does not promise complete regrowth. Continued use is needed to maintain benefits. |
| Rosemary oil | One randomized six-month trial compared a rosemary-oil formulation with 2% minoxidil in 100 people with androgenetic alopecia. | Both groups had a significant increase in mean hair count at six months, with no significant difference between groups. One trial is not proof of broad equivalence. |
| Pumpkin seed oil or saw palmetto | AAD material describes some evidence for these supplements in androgenetic alopecia, while noting that larger studies are needed. | Preliminary possibilities, not established substitutes for minoxidil. |
| Vitamin or mineral supplements | Use is most relevant when testing confirms a deficiency; taking nutrients without a demonstrated need is not established as a general hair-loss treatment. | Excess intake can be harmful and some excesses have been linked to hair loss. |
What minoxidil can—and cannot—do
AAD says topical minoxidil is widely available without a prescription and FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss. Clinical trials cited by the AAD show it can reduce hair loss, stimulate growth, and strengthen existing strands. It is not a cure and may not restore all lost hair. AAD’s overview of male pattern hair loss treatment notes that some men may need six to twelve months to see results.

Use and consistency
Apply it to the scalp as directed by the specific product label and clinician advice. The AAD page gives twice-daily directions for men; do not assume that schedule applies to every product or population. Stopping treatment can mean losing the benefit and increased shedding, so ongoing use is generally needed to maintain regrowth.

Side effects and tolerability
Possible effects include scalp irritation, itching, and headache. AAD notes that foam may reduce irritation risk. If symptoms develop or you are unsure whether minoxidil is suitable, discuss it with a clinician rather than changing the application on your own.
Does rosemary oil work as well as minoxidil?
The comparison often cited is a 2015 randomized trial by Panahi and colleagues, published in Skinmed. It assigned 100 people with androgenetic alopecia—50 to rosemary oil and 50 to 2% minoxidil—for six months. At month three, neither group had a significant change in mean hair count. At month six, both groups had significant increases compared with baseline and month three, and the study found no significant difference between the groups. Scalp itching increased in both groups and was more frequent in the minoxidil group at the measured points. The trial abstract describes this specific study.

A finding of no significant difference in one trial does not establish that rosemary oil and minoxidil are equivalent in general. The study was limited to a particular rosemary formulation, 2% minoxidil, people with androgenetic alopecia, and a six-month period. It does not validate every retail essential oil, diluted mixture, or homemade preparation, nor does it compare rosemary with all minoxidil strengths and formulations. AAD commentary says good studies of rosemary are few and advises treating it as an option only if it does not cause harm; see its 2025 discussion of female pattern hair-loss treatments.
What natural remedies help hair loss?
Pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto
AAD material reports some evidence for pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto as possible options for androgenetic alopecia, but says larger peer-reviewed studies are needed to establish safety and effectiveness. That makes them preliminary possibilities, not proven replacements for a treatment with stronger guideline support. AAD’s summary of evidence on non-prescription supplements discusses these ingredients.

Vitamins and minerals
Do not assume a supplement will help simply because hair loss is present. AAD recommends checking for a deficiency before taking nutrients such as iron, zinc, or biotin for hair growth. Excess selenium, vitamin A, and vitamin E have been linked to hair loss, and high doses can cause harm. Its hair-loss management guidance explains why testing and clinician advice matter before supplementing.

How to choose a sensible next step
- Get the cause assessed. A dermatologist can help distinguish pattern hair loss from other causes and recommend treatment suited to the diagnosis.
- If pattern hair loss is diagnosed, weigh established treatment against your preferences. Minoxidil has stronger dermatology-guideline support than natural remedies, but requires consistent use and may cause irritation or other side effects.
- Keep claims about natural options specific. Rosemary’s result comes from one six-month study using a particular formulation; supplement evidence for pumpkin seed oil and saw palmetto remains preliminary.
- Test before taking nutrients for hair growth. Supplement only when a clinician identifies a reason, such as a deficiency, and follow their advice on dose and safety.
