Anglo American and Teck have shareholder approval for a proposed merger, but the latest cited company announcement still lists regulatory conditions. Rio Tinto and Glencore, meanwhile, were reported to be in preliminary discussions—not to have agreed a merger.

Which mining companies are merging, and what is each deal’s status?
The three widely discussed combinations are not equivalent. One is a completed acquisition; one is a shareholder-approved merger proposal that remained conditional in the cited company announcement; and one was reported as early-stage talks.

What does the completed Eldorado–Foran acquisition add?
Eldorado Gold’s transaction page records that its acquisition of Foran Mining completed on 2026-04-14. Eldorado’s announcement described the transaction at approximately C$3.8 billion in equity value and said Eldorado shareholders were expected to own about 76% of the combined company, with former Foran shareholders holding about 24%. Anglo American and Teck announced a merger of equals on 2025-09-09. Their announcement described a prospective top-five global copper producer, with around 1.2 million tonnes of annual copper production based on specified 2024 production baselines, rising to roughly 1.35 million tonnes in 2027 under the companies’ forecast. The transaction’s proposed ownership split is approximately 62.4% for Anglo American shareholders and 37.6% for Teck shareholders, according to the companies’ terms. The companies said the combination would bring together complementary portfolios and be headquartered in Canada. It is best understood as a copper-led merger between companies with broader mining portfolios, rather than a pure-play copper producer.

What synergies did the companies forecast?
The 2025 announcement projected approximately US$800 million in annual pre-tax synergies by the end of the fourth year after completion. It also projected separate annual EBITDA revenue synergies associated with the adjacent Collahuasi and Quebrada Blanca assets. Both figures are company forecasts; they are not guaranteed savings or revenue, and the cited material does not establish realized outcomes.

What is required before the merger can close?
Teck shareholders approved the proposal on 2025-12-09. In its approval announcement, Anglo American said regulatory approvals and approval under the Investment Canada Act were still required, and that the companies expected to work with regulators during 2026. Are Rio Tinto and Glencore merging?
No merger agreement is established by the cited reporting. Axios reported on 2026-01-08 that the companies were in preliminary discussions about a potential acquisition. It cited a possible combined valuation of around US$260 billion, but that is a press estimate—not a company-confirmed deal valuation. The deals point in different directions: Eldorado–Foran combines a gold-and-copper business; Anglo American–Teck is positioned around a larger copper operation within diversified portfolios; and the reported Rio Tinto–Glencore discussions concern two diversified miners. Only the Anglo American–Teck announcement supplies the copper production estimates cited here, and those estimates depend on a transaction that the cited announcement still made conditional.
