The safest way to reduce an ASIC miner’s electricity use is to lower its power target in small steps, keep chip-level autotuning enabled, and judge each profile by sustained joules per terahash (J/TH)—not by a brief dashboard reading. A good profile is the lowest-power setting that still delivers the hashrate your operation requires with stable temperatures and an acceptable hardware-error rate.
Start from the miner’s stock configuration, measure power at the wall, let tuning finish, and compare profiles under the same ambient conditions. Undervolting or underclocking can improve efficiency, but an aggressive setting that causes frequent restarts, rejected work, thermal throttling or hardware errors is not a saving.

What you are optimizing: stable J/TH, not the lowest watt number
ASIC efficiency is expressed as joules per terahash: the watts consumed divided by the stable terahash-per-second output. For example, a miner drawing 3,500 W while sustaining 200 TH/s uses 17.5 J/TH. Lower is better, provided the hashrate is useful and the machine remains reliable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA dashboard’s instantaneous hashrate or power value can be misleading. Frequency changes, thermal behavior, pool difficulty and autotuning restarts can make a short snapshot look unusually good. Compare completed tuning runs over a long enough period to capture normal fan operation, temperature changes and rejected shares. Use the same definition of power for every profile, including the power-supply unit (PSU) and fans.

Which settings have the greatest effect
Lower the power target gradually
Reduce the target from the stock value in small increments rather than applying a large cut. A lower target normally reduces watts and gives up some hashrate, but the trade-off is not linear: chip quality varies, and an individual miner may retain much of its output after a moderate reduction. Stop reducing the target when the required hashrate, temperature margin or error-rate limit is no longer met.
Vendor examples from Braiins show cases where a 500 W reduction caused only a small hashrate decline and improved J/TH. Those are machine-specific examples, not a guaranteed percentage for another model, room or PSU.
Leave chip-level autotuning enabled
Autotuning calibrates frequency for each ASIC chip against a requested watt target. Because chips on the same board do not have identical electrical characteristics, assigning one frequency to every chip wastes the headroom of stronger chips or overstresses weaker ones. The tuner tests frequencies and selects settings that maximize hashes per watt.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →After changing a target, allow the complete tuning period to finish. A profile that looks efficient while the firmware is still testing frequencies is not a valid result. Record whether the miner rebooted, dropped boards or accumulated hardware errors during tuning.
Use a hashrate target when output is non-negotiable
Some firmware supports a hashrate target instead of—or in addition to—a watt target. Set the minimum output your pool, contract or fleet plan requires and let the firmware seek the lowest power that can meet it. This is preferable to guessing a frequency when capacity matters more than a fixed watt number.
Enable Dynamic Performance Scaling where available
Dynamic Performance Scaling (DPS) can reduce performance as temperatures approach configured limits and restore it when conditions improve. Braiins recommends using DPS with autotuning. It is particularly useful in facilities where inlet temperature changes during the day, because it prevents a profile tuned in cool air from running into thermal limits later.

Treat airflow as an efficiency setting
Clean intake filters, heatsinks and fan paths before comparing firmware. Keep inlet air controlled and record its temperature. Higher chip temperature can materially increase power, while insufficient airflow can trigger protection or frequency reduction. Two profiles tested at different room temperatures are not a fair efficiency comparison.
A repeatable procedure for tuning an ASIC
- Establish the stock baseline. Run the miner at its normal stock setting until temperature and hashrate have stabilized. Measure wall watts, accepted hashrate, inlet and chip temperatures, fan speed and hardware-error rate.
- Verify the electrical installation. Confirm the circuit, connectors and PSU are rated for the miner. Bitmain advises using a power source capable of delivering 20% more than the miner’s stated requirement. Do not begin tuning if the PSU, wiring or voltage is questionable.
- Update only with compatible firmware. Confirm that the firmware supports the exact ASIC model and board revision. Save the existing configuration and note the current firmware version before upgrading.
- Choose one control variable. Set a conservative watt target below stock, or set the minimum hashrate target if that feature is available. Avoid changing voltage, frequency, fan behavior and target simultaneously; otherwise you cannot identify the cause of a failure.
- Keep autotuning on. Start the tuning process and allow it to complete without repeatedly rebooting the miner. Some boards may settle at different frequencies, which is expected in chip-level tuning.
- Wait for a representative run. Measure after the firmware has completed tuning and the miner has operated long enough to show stable accepted hashrate. Include periods of normal fan cycling and ordinary pool operation.
- Check reliability. Reject a profile that causes board dropouts, repeated restarts, rising hardware errors, high-temperature alarms or unexplained hashrate variance.
- Change the target in another small step. Repeat the process only if the previous profile is stable. Keep a log so you can return to the last known-good setting.
- Select the operating point. Choose the lowest stable J/TH that satisfies your minimum hashrate and temperature margin. A slightly less efficient profile may be the right choice if it avoids downtime or preserves required fleet capacity.
How to measure real power and calculate J/TH
Use a properly rated 240 V ASIC wall-power meter or a circuit monitor installed by a qualified electrician. Consumer plug meters may be unsuitable for the current, voltage and continuous duty of a high-power miner. Measure at the wall rather than relying only on the firmware’s internal estimate.
For each profile, log:
- wall power in watts, including PSU and fans;
- stable accepted hashrate in TH/s;
- firmware version and model;
- power or hashrate target;
- ambient and inlet-air temperature;
- chip temperature and fan speed;
- hardware-error and rejected-share rates;
- tuning duration, restarts and board availability.
Calculate J/TH = measured watts ÷ stable TH/s. Keep the measurement method consistent. If one test includes fan and PSU draw and another excludes it, the J/TH figures cannot be compared. Label results with the date, room conditions and exact miner because silicon variation, PSU efficiency and temperature all affect the outcome.
Reference point: the Antminer S21
Bitmain lists a 2024 reference specification for the Antminer S21 of 200 TH/s at 3,500 W and 17.5 J/TH at 25°C. The stated input range is 220–277 V, and the operating range is 0–45°C. This is a nameplate reference, not a promise that every unit will reach those figures after shipping, aging, a different PSU or custom firmware.
| Specification | Bitmain S21 reference | How to use it in a test |
|---|---|---|
| Hashrate | 200 TH/s | Compare with your sustained accepted hashrate, not a momentary peak. |
| Power | 3,500 W | Measure at the wall and include PSU and fan consumption. |
| Efficiency | 17.5 J/TH | Recalculate under your room temperature and firmware. |
| Input voltage | 220–277 V | Verify the circuit and PSU are suitable for the installed region. |
| Operating temperature | 0–45°C | Keep inlet conditions within the specification and log them during tests. |
Comparing stock, autotuning and aggressive overclock profiles
| Profile | Primary objective | Expected trade-off | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock firmware | Predictable operation and manufacturer defaults | May not deliver the best J/TH for your particular chips or room. | Baseline watts, hashrate, temperature and errors. |
| Supported autotuning firmware | Meet a watt or hashrate target efficiently | Requires tuning time; model compatibility, fees, support and warranty terms differ. | Completed-run J/TH, retained hashrate, restarts and tuning stability. |
| Aggressive overclock | Maximum hashrate | Usually worsens efficiency and increases heat, fan demand and failure risk. | Incremental hashrate versus extra watts, error rate and thermal margin. |
Autotuning and overclocking are different functions. Autotuning is an efficiency function: it seeks the best chip frequencies for a requested power or hashrate. Overclocking is a hashrate function: it pushes frequency and voltage to obtain more output, typically at worse J/TH. Do not call an overclock efficient merely because its total revenue is higher.

Safety, warranty and electrical limits
Bitmain states that the power source should offer 20% more output than the miner requires. That headroom is for safe continuous operation; it is not permission to exceed the PSU, connector or circuit rating. Use correctly sized conductors, breakers and connectors, and have high-voltage work checked by a qualified professional.

Bitmain also warns that operating a miner outside its instructions or changing settings without consent can remove liability for damage. Its firmware guidance cautions that higher overclocking gears may damage the miner and that improper use can eliminate after-sales warranty coverage. Read the model-specific warranty and firmware terms before installing third-party software.
Power, voltage and temperature alarms should be treated as installation or hardware faults before they are treated as tuning problems. A lower target can hide a weak PSU temporarily while leaving the underlying hazard unresolved.

The miner will not initialize after changing the target
Power it down safely and return to the last known-good profile. Check input voltage, wiring, PSU condition and firmware compatibility. Do not keep raising voltage or frequency to force startup.
Frequency reduction or high-temperature alarms appear
Inspect intake and exhaust paths, filters, fans and ambient temperature. Improve airflow and retest at the same target. DPS can limit performance near the thermal ceiling, but it cannot repair blocked airflow or a failed fan.
One hashboard drops out
Record which board is missing, restore the stable profile and inspect connectors and PSU behavior. If the board remains absent at stock settings, stop tuning and follow the manufacturer’s service procedure.
Hashrate looks high but pool output is low
Compare accepted pool hashrate and rejected shares with the local dashboard. Allow enough time for normal pool variance, then check network connectivity, stale shares and hardware errors. Use accepted hashrate for the J/TH calculation.

Efficiency worsens after a firmware change
Repeat the test with identical ambient conditions and wall-meter placement. Check whether the new firmware changed fan policy or included a different power definition. If the result remains worse, roll back to the documented stable version.

Choosing the right operating point for your fleet
The best setting depends on electricity price, required capacity, cooling cost and the value of uptime. A facility with a hard megawatt limit may prefer a hashrate-target profile that fits the available supply. A site with cheap power but expensive cooling may value lower watts and heat even when the hashrate sacrifice is larger. A pool contract requiring a minimum output should use that requirement as the constraint rather than chasing the lowest possible watt figure.
Compare profiles using the same ambient temperature and measurement boundary, then evaluate:
- stable J/TH at the required output;
- hashrate retained versus the minimum acceptable level;
- wall watts, including fans and PSU losses;
- tuning time and restart behavior;
- hardware-error and rejected-share rates;
- temperature margin and cooling or noise cost;
- firmware fees, model support and warranty implications.
There is no universal savings percentage. Two units of the same model can produce different results because of silicon, PSU efficiency, dust, firmware version and room temperature. Publish or record measured results for the exact model and conditions, and identify vendor examples as vendor examples rather than guarantees.
Practical maintenance checklist
- Clean airflow paths before every serious comparison.
- Keep a configuration backup and the previous stable firmware available.
- Label every log with model, serial or fleet identifier, firmware version and date.
- Use the same wall meter and calculation boundary for all profiles.
- Review hardware errors and accepted shares, not only local hashrate.
- Set alert thresholds for temperature, board loss, restart loops and abnormal power.
- Recheck the profile when seasons, inlet temperature or PSU hardware changes.
With those controls, underclocking and undervolting become a measured operating decision rather than a guess. The winning profile is the one that continuously meets the required hashrate at the lowest stable wall-measured J/TH while preserving electrical, thermal and warranty safety.
