Quick answer: which controller should you buy?
| Choose this | Best for | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Most players, console and PC use, headset chat, and one-controller households | Full-size shell, AA batteries, and a higher price than the wired mini option |
| Official Xbox Nano Controller | Smaller hands, travel, rechargeable power, and Xbox-plus-Bluetooth play | USB-C charging cable is sold separately; current price and availability can vary |
| PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller | Compact gaming at a lower listed price, especially at a desk or fixed setup | It is wired, so there is no wireless console or Bluetooth play |
There is no objective winner for comfort. Hand size, grip style, seating position, and how long you play matter more than a product label. The manufacturer descriptions establish intended size and features, but they do not provide independent standardized testing for comfort, latency, durability, or hand-size fit.

When people ask about a mini Xbox controller, they may be referring to either of two compact designs:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Official Xbox Nano Controller
Microsoft positions the Xbox Nano as “Our smallest controller, for big adventures.” It is an official Xbox product designed for smaller hands and portable play. It uses Xbox Wireless with Xbox consoles and Bluetooth with compatible Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, tablets, iOS devices, Android devices, and compatible smart TVs. Its built-in rechargeable battery is a major difference from the standard controller’s removable AA cells.
PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller
The PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller is a separate, officially licensed compact controller. Its model is listed for Xbox Series X|S under SKU XBGP0025-01, with compatibility also listed for Xbox One and Windows 10/11. It connects by cable rather than Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth. The trade-off is straightforward: a lower listed price and a small, light body in exchange for being tethered to the console or PC.
Comparing both against the standard Xbox Wireless Controller is more useful than treating “mini” as a single specification. The official Nano competes on portability and rechargeable convenience; the PowerA model competes on compact size and price.
Size, hand fit, and portability
Small hands
The official Xbox Nano is the clearest choice when a full-size Xbox pad feels wide, heavy, or difficult to reach. Microsoft specifically describes it as suitable for smaller hands. A smaller shell can reduce the stretch to the face buttons, triggers, bumpers, and sticks, particularly for children and adults with shorter fingers.
The PowerA Nano also uses a compact, lighter design. PowerA says the shape is intended to be easier to navigate than standard Xbox controllers and useful for reducing hand fatigue during long sessions. That is a design goal, not an independent comfort measurement, so your grip and hand proportions still decide whether it feels better.
Large hands
Players with large hands may prefer the standard Xbox Wireless Controller because its familiar full-size body gives the palms and fingers more room. A mini controller can force a tighter grip, make the sticks feel closer together, or cause accidental contact with nearby buttons. If you already like the standard Xbox layout, switching to a smaller body is not automatically an ergonomic upgrade.

Travel and storage
Both compact models are easier to pack than a standard controller. The official Nano is especially travel-friendly because it has wireless console connectivity and an internal battery, so there is no permanent cable during play. The PowerA model remains compact but requires its cable whenever you use it; plan for the controller and cable together in your travel bag.

Connection and platform support

|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Wireless | Bluetooth on compatible Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, and Android devices | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS |

Xbox Series X|S
Yes, mini controllers can work on Xbox Series X|S, but the connection depends on the model. The official Xbox Nano uses Xbox Wireless. The PowerA Nano is listed as officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S and connects by cable. The standard Xbox Wireless Controller also uses Xbox Wireless and is the least complicated choice if you want the normal Xbox experience.
Windows PC
The standard controller and official Nano can use Bluetooth with compatible Windows 10/11 PCs. Bluetooth is useful when you want a clean desk and your PC has compatible Bluetooth hardware. The PowerA Nano is a wired Windows 10/11 option, which avoids pairing but requires a free USB port and a cable connection.
Phones, tablets, and smart TVs
The official Nano’s listed Bluetooth support includes Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, Android, and compatible smart TVs. The standard controller’s listed Bluetooth support covers compatible Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, and Android devices. The PowerA Nano’s listed compatibility is Xbox and Windows, not Bluetooth mobile or smart-TV play.

“Compatible” is important: Bluetooth support depends on the device, operating system, game, and controller support in that game. A device can pair successfully and still require an on-screen control setting or a supported title before its buttons work.

Battery, charging, and cable requirements
Standard Xbox Wireless Controller: AA batteries
Microsoft lists up to 40 hours of battery life for the standard controller when using standard AA batteries. That figure comes from Microsoft’s stated test conditions with standard AA batteries in preproduction units. Microsoft warns that actual life varies with headset use, accessories, and how you play, so “up to 40 hours” is not a guaranteed session count.
AA cells are convenient if you already keep spares, and replacing them takes seconds. They also mean you can continue playing immediately with a fresh pair. The disadvantages are recurring battery purchases, extra weight compared with some rechargeable designs, and the possibility of running out during a session.
Official Xbox Nano: internal rechargeable battery
The official Nano has an internal rechargeable battery. That removes the need to buy and carry AA cells, which is useful for travel and for players who prefer charging between sessions. A USB-C cable is required for charging and is sold separately, so check that you have a suitable cable before relying on the controller away from home.

Do not assume that its endurance matches the standard controller’s “up to 40 hours” claim; those figures describe different products and test conditions.
PowerA Nano: wired power
The PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller draws power through its cable while connected. You do not charge it or replace batteries, but the cable must reach the Xbox or PC. A wired design can be an advantage at a desk because it eliminates pairing and battery management. It is less convenient for couch play, travel locations without a nearby port, or anyone who wants to move freely.
Controls, headset support, and extra features
3.5mm headset jack
The standard Xbox Wireless Controller includes a 3.5mm stereo headset jack. The PowerA Nano also lists a 3.5mm stereo headset jack, so both can connect compatible wired gaming headsets directly to the controller. The supplied official Nano specifications do not list a 3.5mm jack, so confirm the exact feature set if wired headset connection is essential to your purchase.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
PowerA Nano’s additional controls
The PowerA Nano includes two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons, dual rumble motors, and a Share button. The mappable buttons can put frequently used actions under your fingers without changing the game’s standard controls. Their value depends on whether you actually use remapping; they are not a reason to choose the controller if you require wireless play.
Standard layout and familiarity
The standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the safest choice for players who want familiar full-size Xbox ergonomics. It is also the easiest model to recommend to a household with several players because it does not impose a compact layout on everyone. The official Nano is better viewed as a deliberate small-form-factor choice rather than a universal replacement.
Prices and availability
| Model or version | Price information | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller (Core) | $64.99 | Microsoft US recommended retail price sheet dated May 1, 2025 |
| Xbox Wireless Controller (Color) | $69.99 | Microsoft US recommended retail price sheet dated May 1, 2025 |
| Xbox Wireless Controller – Special Edition | $79.99 | Microsoft US recommended retail price sheet dated May 1, 2025 |
| Xbox Wireless Controller – Limited Edition | $89.99 | Microsoft US recommended retail price sheet dated May 1, 2025 |
| PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller | $39.99 | PowerA’s listed price for SKU XBGP0025-01; retailer pricing can change |
| Official Xbox Nano Controller | Not stated in the supplied specifications | Microsoft says prices and availability may vary by retailer |
Microsoft has also described the standard Xbox Wireless Controller as starting at $79.99 USD in an Xbox Wire statement. That statement does not replace the later US recommended-retail-price sheet, which lists different prices by edition. Treat the edition and date as part of the price rather than assuming one universal standard-controller price.
The official Nano’s launch timing, current price, and retailer stock are changeable. Check the current listing before purchase, especially if you are comparing it with a sale price on the standard model. The PowerA Nano’s $39.99 figure is a listed price, not a promise that every retailer will charge that amount.
How to choose by use case
Choose the standard Xbox Wireless Controller if:
- You want the safest all-purpose controller for Xbox and PC.
- You prefer full-size, familiar Xbox ergonomics.
- You need a 3.5mm headset jack.
- You want wireless console play and Bluetooth on compatible Windows, tablet, iOS, or Android devices.
- You are comfortable carrying AA batteries or replacing them when needed.
- Several people with different hand sizes will share the controller.
Choose the official Xbox Nano if:
- A standard controller feels too large or causes finger stretch.
- You carry a controller frequently and want a pocketable form.
- You prefer an internal rechargeable battery over AA batteries.
- You want wireless Xbox play plus Bluetooth device support.
- You regularly play on Xbox and compatible Windows, iOS, Android, tablet, or smart-TV devices.
- You have confirmed the current price, stock, and included accessories, including the separate USB-C charging requirement.
Choose the PowerA Nano if:
- You want a compact controller at the documented $39.99 listed price.
- Your Xbox or PC is close enough that a cable is acceptable.
- You prefer plug-and-play wired use instead of pairing and charging.
- You value two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons, dual rumble motors, and a Share button.
- You need a 3.5mm headset jack but do not need wireless mobile play.
Setup instructions
Pairing the standard controller or official Nano with an Xbox
- Turn on the Xbox console.
- Turn on the controller using its Xbox button.
- Press the console’s pairing button, then press and hold the controller’s pairing button until the Xbox light flashes.
- Wait for the light to remain steady, indicating that the controller is connected.
- Open a game and test both sticks, triggers, and the headset if you use one.
The exact button location can differ between controller revisions, so use the labels on your model if the pairing button is not immediately visible.
Pairing Bluetooth on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open Settings and select Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on and choose Add device, then Bluetooth.
- Turn on the controller and hold its pairing button until the Xbox light flashes.
- Select the controller when it appears in the device list.
- Wait for Windows to show it as connected, then open your game’s controller settings and test the inputs.
Use a wired PowerA Nano instead when you want to avoid Bluetooth pairing. Connect its cable to the Xbox or a supported Windows PC, wait for the operating system or console to recognize it, and test the controls before launching a long session.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Connecting to iOS, Android, or a tablet
- Open the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Put the standard controller or official Nano into pairing mode.
- Select the controller from the available-device list.
- Open a controller-supported game and check its input settings.
The PowerA Nano is not a Bluetooth controller. Its listed compatibility is wired Xbox and Windows use, so do not buy it expecting wireless phone or tablet play.
Troubleshooting and buying pitfalls
The controller will not pair
- Confirm that the controller is charged or has working batteries.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again on the PC or mobile device, then repeat pairing mode.
- Remove an old controller entry from the device’s Bluetooth list before pairing again.
- On Xbox, move the controller closer to the console and repeat the console-and-controller pairing sequence.
- For the wired Nano, reseat the cable and try another compatible USB port.
The headset has no sound
- Check that the headset plug is fully inserted into the 3.5mm jack.
- Confirm that the game and operating system have selected the controller headset as the output device.
- Test the headset on another compatible device to rule out a damaged cable.
- Remember that the supplied official Nano specifications do not list a 3.5mm headset jack; verify the exact model before buying for wired chat.
The controller feels uncomfortable
Do not infer comfort from the word “mini” alone. A smaller shell may help short fingers but feel cramped to larger hands. If possible, buy from a retailer with a clear return policy, hold the controller in your normal grip, and test the reach to the triggers, bumpers, sticks, and face buttons. No independent standardized comfort study establishes one of these models as universally best.
You expected wireless PowerA Nano play
The PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller is wired. It does not provide Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth freedom. Choose the official Nano or standard Xbox Wireless Controller if eliminating the cable is a requirement.
You expected the Nano to include a charging cable
Microsoft states that a USB-C cable is required for charging the official Xbox Nano and is sold separately. Budget for a suitable cable or confirm that you already own one before taking it on a trip.
Frequently asked buying decisions
Is a mini Xbox controller worth it?
It is worth it when the smaller body solves a real problem: a full-size controller is uncomfortable, you travel with it, or you prefer rechargeable power. It is not automatically a better value if you mainly play on a couch and want wireless headset use; in that situation, the standard controller may be the more practical choice.
Which Xbox controller is better for small hands?
The official Xbox Nano is the most direct fit because Microsoft explicitly positions it for smaller hands. The PowerA Nano is also compact, but its wired connection and feature set make it a different purchase. Test the grip if possible, because hand proportions and personal preference still determine comfort.
Which is best for both PC and console?
The standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the broadest general-purpose answer. The official Nano also supports Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth across the listed PC and mobile platforms, so it is the better choice when portability and rechargeable power outweigh full-size ergonomics. The PowerA Nano is suitable for Xbox and Windows by cable, not for wireless cross-device use.
Recommended Free Tools
Do mini Xbox controllers work on Xbox Series X?
Yes. The official Xbox Nano is specified for Xbox Series X|S through Xbox Wireless, and the PowerA Nano is officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S as a wired controller.
Quick Recap
Final buying framework
- Measure the problem first: if the standard controller is comfortable, its broad compatibility makes it the default.
- If hand size or travel is the priority, compare the official Nano’s wireless rechargeable design with the PowerA Nano’s wired compact design.
- Decide whether you need a 3.5mm headset jack. It is listed for the standard and PowerA models, but not in the supplied official Nano specifications.
- Choose your power preference: AA batteries, internal rechargeable battery, or cable-powered play.
- Check the current retailer price and stock. The standard prices vary by edition, the PowerA listing is $39.99, and the official Nano’s current price is not fixed in the supplied specifications.
